Kiss InstaWave Automatic Hair Curler

Kiss Products, the maker of fabulous faux nails and lashes, is branching out. Kiss has just launched a new automatic hair curler. It’s a step beyond a regular curling iron with very cool new technology!

For a change of pace, I like to curl my hair. I have a curling iron but it was hard to get my hair to stay on it. So I’d often resort to my old hot rollers from the 1990s because they worked better than the curling iron. But they were a bit of a pain, and my hair needed more rollers than the set contained.

So I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to try the new Kiss InstaWave. The Kiss InstaWave is an automatic tangle-free curler that can be used with either hand. That’s great because I’m a lefty and often tools are made for us.

The InstaWave comes with instructions on the box…

and an instruction sheet inside the box.

There’s a bit of a learning curve, and I’m still figuring out what my thick, coarse hair needs to help the curls or waves stay in.

When you turn on the Kiss InstaWave, there is a red light that turns blue when it’s heated up. You can choose High or Low heat. Because my hair is thick and difficult to curl, I chose High which goes to a maximum temperature of 420 degrees. It automatically shuts off after 90 minutes in case someone leaves it on by mistake. I would not allow a child to use this as she could burn herself, but it certainly is safe for you to use to curl an older child’s hair (though I would use the Low setting). Teens would be fine with it, perhaps under supervision for the first time or two.

Here are some guidelines for using the Kiss InstaWave:

  • Hold the InstaWave vertically, like this:

  • Place a relatively small section of hair against the curling rod between the rod and the larger prong that helps the hair stay in place.
  • The Curl Dial can move in either the left or right direction. Touch the dial in the direction that you want it to go. You don’t have to figure it out, it’s just intuitive!
  • I usually start high up on my head and place a section of hair on the rod. Then move the InstaWave down vertically, and it will pick up more hair and twirl it onto the rod as it goes.
  • Once you’ve gotten the hair on the rod, take your finger off the Curl Dial, and hold in place for 5-10 seconds. If your hair is thick like mine, 10 full seconds (or even a couple more) is a necessity.
  • Then pull the InstaWave straight down to release the curl.

That’s it! And no tangles.

As I said earlier, I’m still “perfecting” my technique. First, I need to buy some hair clips like they use at the hair salon to section off my hair. Second, I need to use curling or setting spray so that the curls will be tighter and last longer. My hair is thick and HEAVY!

I made a video to show how I use the Kiss InstaWave, and of course, my camera ran out of memory while I was babbling away! Also, it’s my first attempt at doing a simple edit. 😳 Please don’t judge.

I intend to keep at it, as I’d like to have a full head of curls/waves at some of the upcoming holiday parties.

    1. The Kiss InstaWave is designed so that your hair can’t get tangled. I didn’t believe it till I tried it. As it twirled, I thought my hair would get tangled, but it did not, NOT AT ALL. Then you pull the device straight down and my curled hair just slips off the barrel. Magic!

  2. I love how your hair looks curled! So pretty! 🙂

  4. This looks really cool!

    1. It is a fun little device, Brianna! I have to keep at it using more setting spray and holding it for a little longer, but it definitely does curl. Nice for a change of pace from my straight hair 🙂

  5. I don’t think I could be trusted with a tool like this, I’ll probably get my hair all tangled up. Curls look great on you!

    1. Hahaha, Deborah! Yes, you actually could! The brilliant part of this nifty device is that it is non-tangling. I thought my hair would get tangled, and as it’s twirling, I thought it was tangling but it isn’t. I don’t know how they designed it to prevent tangling, but they did 🙂

  6. I definitely want to give this a try! I think my hair is long enough for it

    1. Thank you, Vivienne! As you could see, I haven’t totally cracked the code on it yet! I need to use more setting spray and hold it for at least 15 seconds. And then, how to get the back done?? With the layers in my hair, it is not a cinch 😉

  8. I want to try this!

  9. Very nice! My hair is straight as a board, so I’ve stopped trying to curl it. I keep it short so the ends always flip and it gives the illusion of curls 🙂 haha!
Destany recently posted…NYC Midnight Beauty Makeup Collection! My Profile

    1. Sounds very pretty, Destany! Flat-ironing my hair is a necessity, otherwise it looks awful. I do like curls for a change, but my hair is layered and though the Kiss InstaWave is easy to operate, my layered hair makes it a bit harder. Plus I need more setting spray! Mostly, my hair either flips up at the ends like yours (I like that look!) or I flat iron it under.

  10. Allison, you look gorgeous with curls! I need a curler/straightener but my hair poufs up with all the humidity no matter what I do lol.

    1. My hair would do the same in humidity! It would be straight and wild 😉

  11. Look at you with the curls. I’d like to try this gadget. 😀
Erika recently posted…For Soft, Touchable Tresses…My Profile

  14. Very cool curler!
I have a Braun Satin Hair 7 multi-styler (curler and straightener 2 in 1), but it is a little bit tricky when it comes to curling my hair using it.
Kiss curler is much easier, and gives good curls. I like it !
And I like your video, too 🙂

  17. Your hair looks great! I got this too and I love it- so easy!
Bailey recently posted…Lise Watier Winter 2014 | Aurora CollectionMy Profile

    1. Thank you, Bailey! I don’t think I found it quite as easy to use as you did, but I think it’s fun. My hair is layered and it’s so thick. I need to try more setting spray and to hold the curl on the barrel for at least 15 seconds or more to get the curls to stay in. But I’m happy to have it!!

  18. I’ve been using this, too. Separating the sections of hair with clips was crucial for me to get tight curls, and getting the barrel as close to the scalp as you can will give you longer curls, too. It’s a pretty neat gadget, for sure! Glad it was helpful to you left-out Lefties!

    1. Yes, I definitely need to buy some clips to section my hair. Can’t believe I forgot to ask my stylist at Sassoon for a few of her extras today! I have layers so my hair is a bit difficult, plus my hair is coarse but very slippery so I slips down the barrel. That’s why I should be using a lot of setting spray, but I hate spray. I guess the twirling in either direction is helpful to lefties…but I need to look at my video and see which hand I’m using, lol!! Since you already have gorgeous curls, I’m curious about the styles that you’ll create!!

  19. I love your curls. This looks like good beauty gadget to try

  20. You did a really nice job!

    1. Thanks, Justina, but I haven’t really cracked the code yet. It’s tough doing my layered hair. And doing the back of my head is hard 😉

  22. Awww, I just love your hair with those curls, they look so darling! You should curl your hair more often <3

  23. Your hair looks so good curled up! I plan to try this for my hair, it’s pretty long but I’m hoping it will work well.

    1. I’m still learning how to do it on my layered hair that doesn’t want to keep a curl, but I’ll get it! Hope it works for you, Mina 🙂

  24. I am trying to work on my review on this but I think I need to straighten my hair, it keeps getting tangled. I love the concept though – I think it’s awesome.

    1. I’m amazed that the little InstaWave would work at all with hair as long as yours. Good luck with it!

  25. Love the curls on you and such a great gadget! Happy Thanksgiving!
