Laneige Good Night Kit: Sleeping Masks for Face and Lips

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the new Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

I have really, really dry lips, and though I can use “normal” lip balms during the summer, when the cold weather hits, Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm and Hanalei Lip Treatment work best for me (reviewed here and here). So before I bought Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask that everyone has been raving about, I wanted to try it out first. When I was grocery shopping at HMart, the Korean supermarket, I stopped in at the Korean skincare shop and tried a sample of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: the sales associate put some on a Q-tip and I applied it on my lips. It felt thick, but it spread easily on my lips. From that little test, I liked it, but I thought I’d buy it at Sephora during the VIB sale rather than for full price at HMart.

When I got to Sephora several days later, I discovered that Laneige had a Good Night Kit with travel size versions of the Lip Sleeping Mask and the Water Sleeping Mask for face. The kit was regularly priced at $16, and with the discount, it was $12 and change. I thought I would be better off trying a travel size lip mask as well as getting to try another Laneige product.

Lip Sleeping Mask

The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a very nice lip mask for those with normal or regular dry lips. It  is a soft, thick, pink balm that smooths easily onto the lips.

Because it comes in a little pot, I apply mine with a Q-tip. A lip brush would also be a good choice. In a Sephora video I watched, it looks like the full size pot comes with a little sponge tip applicator.

The balm is enriched with antioxidants and vitamin C. The antioxidants comes from Laneige’s Berry Mix Complex (a blend of raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, cranberry, and goji berries) which gives the one I’ve got a very light fruity berryish scent. I can smell the scent if I actually sniff the pot, but when I apply it with a Q-tip, I don’t smell it at all.

Lip Sleeping Mask is manufactured with Moisture Wrap™ technology that includes hyaluronic acid and minerals that form a protective film over the lips to lock in moisture and the active ingredients and are time-released over 8 hours. Because of that technology, it feels really good and protective after it’s applied. But for me and my desert-dry lips, it doesn’t last forever. If I apply it before bed, it is gone by morning, having been absorbed into my lips. Though my lips don’t feel chapped, they feel like I could use another application when I wake up. During the day, it will last for a couple of hours. The mask gets absorbed into my lips. For me, Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask works better than a traditional stick lip balm, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work as well for me as Dr. Lipp or Hanalei.

Nevertheless, dry flakey skin can be easily removed after Lip Sleeping Mask has sunk into the lips. And since I have a tough time with matte lipsticks, I like smoothing a small amount onto my lips before applying a drying or even a neutral lipstick. You can also revive matte lipstick that has dried on lips by applying a little bit on top.

I can understand why so many women love Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, though it isn’t quite as heavy duty and viscous as Dr. Lipp and Hanalei are. My guess is you would like this lip mask a lot.

From the ingredient list below, Laneige contains lots of different ingredients primarily waxes and shea butter whereas my tried-and-true alternatives contains medical grade lanolin (Dr. Lipp) or lanolin/petrolatum/shea butter and oils (Hanalei).

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in the full size pot contains 0.70 oz./20 g and is priced at $20. It comes in four scents. Laneige does not test on animals. Not sure if this product is vegan. Laneige is sold on the Laneige website, at Sephora, at HMart, and at some Target stores.

Water Sleeping Mask

The Water Sleeping Mask is especially wonderful now that the heat is turned on in my house. I have an aftermarket humidifier built onto my furnace, but I’m not sure if it’s turned on  or off! The HVAC company is coming next week, and I need to have them show me how to turn the humidifier on and off. In the meantime, I’m glad I’ve got the Water Sleeping Mask.

The Mask is made with hydro-ionized mineral waters with minerals: zinc, manganese, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium. In fact with the minerals and mineral water, it reminds me of the Vichy Mineral 89 Daily Fortifying Booster that I’m also using. Water Sleeping Mask also contains apricot and evening primrose extracts to brighten and purify tired skin. The mask uses the same time-released Moisture Wrap Technology as the Lip Mask.

The Water Sleeping Mask is a pale blue gel cream. It has a lovely scent when I sniff the mask in the jar. Laneige calls it “Calming Sleepscent”, made from orange flower, rose and sandalwood. Very relaxing. But I don’t really smell it once it’s smoothed onto my skin.

I like the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask a lot. A little goes a long way. The full size jar contains 2.70 oz./70 ml and is priced at $25. It’s available at the same retailers as the Lip Sleeping Mask. Oh, I also have a Laneige ad on the right side of my blog if you’re interested.

Ingredients: WATER / AQUA / EAU, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, GLYCERIN, CYCLOHEXASILOXANE, TREHALOSE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, OENOTHERA BIENNIS (EVENING PRIMROSE) ROOT EXTRACT, PRUNUS ARMENIACA (APRICOT) FRUIT EXTRACT, BETA-GLUCAN, CHENOPODIUM QUINOA SEED EXTRACT, ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE, MAGNESIUM SULFATE, ZINC SULFATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, POTASSIUM ALGINATE, AMMONIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYLTAURATE / VP COPOLYMER, POLYSORBATE 20, DIMETHICONE, DIMETHICONOL, DIMETHICONE / VINYL DIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, PROPANEDIOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, STEARYL BEHENATE, POLYGLYCERYL-3 METHYLGLUCOSE DISTEARATE, HYDROXYPROPYL BISPALMITAMIDE MEA, INULIN LAURYL CARBAMATE, ALCOHOL, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, CARBOMER, TROMETHAMINE, DISODIUM EDTA, PHENOXYETHANOL, FRAGRANCE / PARFUM, BLUE 1 (CI 42090)

I’m glad I bought this nice little duo of travel size masks. I think the Good Night Kit is unique to Sephora because I don’t see it on the Laneige website. But I also don’t see it on Sephora.com now either. Where I do see it is on an international website that sells Korean and Japanese skincare called YesStyle.com. I’ve never purchased anything from YesStyle.com, but they have a Cyber Monday+ sale going on, and the Good Night Kit is seriously reduced to $6.36. Also, the Lip Sleeping Mask on YesStyle.com is on sale for $13.56 right now. They ship internationally, and free shipping kicks in at $35.

Have you tried the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask or the Water Sleeping Mask yet?

  1. I have not tried the Lip Mask but it’s in my list to try. I love Water Sleeping Mask and repurchased 2-3 times but Water Firming mask better! It’s like Water Sleeping mask on steroid and I wake up to the softest, smoothest and freshest skin every time I use it.

    1. Thank you for recommending Water Firming Mask, Shireen! I will seek out a sample or travel size to try next!

  2. What a great way to try two products. This was a deal and you learned what you like. Thanks for mentioning the fragrance as I always thought Laneige would be more highly fragranced since it’s KBeauty.

    1. Since you have mentioned your reaction to fragrances, I try to remember to talk about the scent in my reviews. Both of these Laneige products have light scents if you sniff the jar, but on the lips or face – nothing. This duo was so popular, it’s sold out on both the Laneige website and on Sephora.com. Glad I got it when I did.

  3. My lips are SO chapped right now – well pretty much all the time but esp in the winter!

    1. The Lip Sleeping Mask is new, Sandy, and everyone seems to be talking about it. It is very smooth and spreads so easily on the lips. It’s very nice. The Good Night Kit that I bought is sold out on the Laneige website (where it was $10) and on Sephora.com – I guess it was a success!

Thanks for listing the ingredients. Unless these two ingredients are plant alternatives which they did not specify, both are not vegan: glycerin and sodium hyaluronate (derivative of hyaluronic acid which comes from animals). Always happy to hear your thoughts on products you buy and use.

I bought the kit also and feel pretty much the same.I like the lip mask fine but prefer Hanalei and I love the water sleeping face mask. I will purchase the face mask but probably not the lip one(simply because I love Hanalei).

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way, Laura. The Laneige Lip Mask is very nice, but it doesn’t last on my lips the way the fabulous Hanalei or Dr. Lipp balms do. But I’m glad I didn’t spend a fortune to find that out, and at least I discovered the fab Water Sleeping Mask!
