Lip Treatments from Bigger Than Beauty Skincare!

Last week, I introduced you to Bigger Than Beauty, the sister brand to Thrive Causemetics. In fact, I told you how much I love their total eye area gel-cream, Defying Gravity (reviewed here).

Today, I have two lip treatments from BTB to tell you about.

Both are:

  • cruelty-free
  • synthetic fragrance-free
  • gluten-free
  • sulfate and parabens-free.

Bigger Than Beauty Lip Treatments

Pout Hero Liquid Balm Lip Treatment

Pout Hero is a liquid gel glossy balm that comes in a chic applicator square “bottle”. It has a doe-foot applicator with hole in the center.

The cushiony balm hydrates and restores dull, dry lips. The website says that it will heal dry lips with regular usage for about 8 weeks. Because my lips are in good shape, I wasn’t able to test that part out. Nevertheless, my lips felt smooth and supple wearing it. Pout Hero contains skin-nourishing vitamins and plant extracts that deliver powerful antioxidant protection and hydration. The key ingredients include:, v

  • Lip Filler TechnologyTM
  • vegan polyglycerides that plumpl, smooth, and soften lips
  • sesame seed extract and Vitamin E to protect against environmental stressors.

Ingredient List for Original: DIISOSTEARYL MALATE, OCTYLDODECANOL, DIPENTAERYTHRITYL PENTAISONONANOATE, HYDROGENATED DIMER DILINOLEYL/DIMETHYLCARBONATE COPOLYMER, OLEIC/LINOLEIC/LINOLENIC POLYGLYCERIDES, ETHYLCELLULOSE, HYDROGENATED DILINOLEYL ALCOHOL, ISOSTEARYL ALCOHOL, SILICA CETYL SILYLATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE, CRAMBE ABYSSINICA SEED OIL, HOMOSALATE, PHYTOSTERYL/OCTYLDODECYL LAUROYL GLUTAMATE, DIMETHYL ISOSORBIDE, SESAMUM INDICUM (SESAME) SEED EXTRACT, BRASSICA ALBA SPROUT EXTRACT, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) PEEL OIL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PANTHENOL, GLYCERYL UNDECYLENATE, RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, TOCOPHEROL, ETHYL BUTYRATE, CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA (LIME) OIL, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) PEEL EXTRACT, CITRUS PARADISI (GRAPEFRUIT) PEEL OIL, CITRUS RETICULATA (TANGERINE) PEEL OIL, LINALOOL, LIMONENE, [+/- RED 27 LAKE (CI 45410), BLUE 1 LAKE (CI 42090)].

The balm is relatively lightweight (I wouldn’t want it to be completely lightweight), but emollient. It lasts on my lips for a few hours, especially if I don’t eat or drink anything. Plus, it’s a cinch to reapply if I need it.

Pout Hero Liquid Lip Balm comes in 3 versions, though I received the permanent Original version rather than either of the two Limited Edition flavors.

  • Original: Synthetic Fragrance-free and colorless
  • Limited Edition Birthday Cake: naturally flavored and tinted slightly pink
  • Limited Edition Scent Pumpkin Spice Latte: naturally flavored with cardamom, clove and creamy vanilla, and tinted slightly orangey

Pout Hero has over 1500 reviews on the Thrive website, and I wanted to check out some of them since the product is rated higher than 4.5 out of 5. First, I was surprised at how many commenters were repeat Pout Hero customers. One woman who declared herself “obsessed” said that she used it all day and night and found that a tube lasted her 3 weeks! Many others used it as a before bed treatment, while others applied it during the day. Of the few negative reviews, it either contained an ingredient that dried out the commenters lips, didn’t like the flavor, or it didn’t seem more effective than other lip glosses or balms. The negatives were in the small minority.

The container holds 0.22 fl. oz./6.4 ml and is priced at $26. Pout Hero Liquid Lip Balm is sold only on the Thrive website.

SunProof Nourishing Lip Balm SPF 24

To be honest, I like both Pout Hero and SunProof Nourishing Lip Balm, and I often can’t decide which to use especially during the day. Since the weather has been so awful around here and beach weather is certainly finished for the year, I haven’t needed the SPF 24. But hopefully, the sun will return soon, and I can save SunProof for sunny or at least outdoorsy days!

SunProof Nourishing Lip Balm SPF 24 was designed to shield lips from the sun while nourishing them. It contains a broad-spectrum UVA + UVB formula to keeps lips protected and hydrated.

It comes in two versions:

  • Fresh Mint
  • Sweet Tangerine.

Although I would have preferred Sweet Tangerine, I was very surprised to discover that Bigger Than Beauty’s Fresh Mint doesn’t irritate my lips, thank goodness, even though it has peppermint oil in it.

Fresh Mint Ingredients: SYNTHETIC BEESWAX, POLYHYDROXYSTEARIC ACID, THEOBROMA CACAO (COCOA) SEED BUTTER, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, BUTYLOCTYL SALICYLATE, C32-36 ISOALKYL STEARATE, ALUMINUM STARCH OCTENYLSUCCINATE, BIS-DIGLYCERYL POLYACYLADIPATE-2, BEHENYL BEHENATE, MENTHA PIPERITA (PEPPERMINT) OIL, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX (CANDELILLA CERA), STEARYL BEHENATE, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, PUNICA GRANATUM STEROLS, ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL, POLYGLYCERYL-3 STEARATE, MENTHA VIRIDIS (SPEARMINT) LEAF OIL, PIMPINELLA ANISUM (ANISE) SEED OIL, PANTHENOL (VITA MIN B5), SODIUM HYALURONATE, MAGNESIUM ASPARTATE, ZINC GLUCONATE, MANGIFERA INDICA (MANGO) SEED BUTTER, PASSIFLORA INCARNATA SEED OIL, COPPER GLUCONATE, PRUNUS AVIUM (SWEET CHERRY) SEED OIL, POLYSORBATE 60, RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, STEVIA REBAUDIANA EXTRACT,  HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, LIMONENE

The active sunscreen ingredients are chemical ingredients:

  • AVOBENZONE 3.0%
  • HOMOSALATE 10.0%
  • OCTISALATE 5.0%

It is recommended to reapply every two hours if using this lip balm for its sunscreen benefits, as you would any sunscreen.

I really like this more traditional lip balm. It comes in a small, slant top tube that’s easy to carry around and apply. It feels heavenly on my lips: smooth and protective but not sticky.

Just for the heck of it, I tried using it at night instead of my usual City Lips Clear, and it didn’t last overnight quite as well as City Lips. But then, why would I use a balm with sunscreen in it at night. So, that was just a bit of information, lol.

SunProof Nourishing Lip Balm SPF 24‘s tube contains 0.28 fl. oz./8g and is priced at $18. Like all Thrive products, it is sold only on the Thrive Cosmetics website.

    1. Since Thrive Causmetics is such an impressive and affordable brand, it’s great that they have introduced a skincare line as well!

  2. Hi, Allison – You are inspiring me to try to use more of my cosmetics and take really good care of myself. These are amazing. I’d like to know more about how the sister companies work together…and about why we need SPF for our lips even though we wear lipstick every day…just some curious thoughts. It’s great how companies keep coming up with new things. There must be endless possibilities. Thanks for sharing what’s new! – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    1. Angie, unless your lipstick has sunscreen in it (some do, many don’t), lips can get burned from the sun’s rays not only in the summer but also if spending time outdoors in the winter skiing, snowshoeing etc. when the snow makes it even more likely. There are lots of lip balms with sunscreen (natural and organic ones like Eco Lips, Rubber Ducky etc.) that cost less. Both of these products are skincare treatments for lips that provide a range of benefits 🙂

These sound impressive. I get emails from Thrive all the time so I’ll have to start paying attention especially if they have free shipping days.

    1. I think it’s interesting and somewhat unusual that Thrive came out with a different brand name for their skincare line. Not sure why. Nevertheless, I love the Defying Gravity Eye Cream and I like these lip products too. So I will also “start paying attention” to what else they have from Bigger Than Beauty.

  4. Gabrielle says:

I definitely want to try that SPF balm. What an excellent idea that is!

    1. I was amazed that I am able to use the BTB Lip Balm SPF 45 since the flavor I got has peppermint oil, but it is a good one!

  5. What! I have never done a treatment for my lips. I totally should! Thanks!
