L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara: Perfection!

I have been a big fan of the original L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara, reviewed here. I loved the formula that both lengthened and volumized my lashes. It was that unwieldy wand that I couldn’t quite master. It is curved and wider at one end but only on one side. While it’s great for my right eye, I dislike using it on my left.

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

I was excited when I heard that L’Oreal was coming out with a new mascara in the Butterfly mascara line: L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara. The packaging is very similar to the first Butterfly — silver with black lines and the distinctive tapered shape at top and bottom — but with a metallic red wand handle that matches the red of the bristles.

What’s different about the new line extension is the wand, thank goodness. It still has the curved wing shape, but now it has a double wing at the base of the wand. Now I can just change the direction of the wand for my other eye without worrying about whether it’s the wing side or the little bristle side. This new wand is so much easier for me to manipulate!

The mascara formula is either just as wonderful as the original or maybe even a bit better. I love how it added both length and volume to my lashes with no clumps. The packaging also says that it’s flake free and smudge free. After wearing it for almost 10 hours, I can attest to those claims! And the new wand shape allowed me to apply mascara even to the little inner lashes and my lower lashes with no problem.  😛

This part is an addendum to my original review. I didn’t realize that the new Butterfly Intenza formula is FIBER-INFUSED!! How the heck did I miss that?? Maybe because I never read the back of the pack, lol! The formula is so easy to work with, and the fibers are so well-incorporated into the formula that you don’t notice they’re there till you see the results. One bit of warning, however, don’t apply too many coats so you will avoid the dreaded spider eyes look. I got what I think is a natural but with much more oomph look. You probably could go for an additional coat if you like more volume.

I’m 100 percent satisfied!

I purchased L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara from a limited edition-like display yesterday at CVS, but I’m hoping this will be a permanent addition to the Butterfly family. The price varies from about $7.99-9.49 depending on where you buy it. Made in the U.S.

Have you tried the new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza yet? If so, what did you think?

  1. Oh my, what a peculiar wand! Interesting.

    1. Yes, it is peculiar, Melissa, but it’s so much easier for me to hold/use than the winged wand 🙂

  2. Maria J. says:

I love the New mascara as much as I love the original, but I always come back to the original mascara because of the wand shape and the lengthening effect!

    1. Great to hear from you, Maria! Glad that the original wand shape works so well for you. I just couldn’t figure out how to easily change how I was holding the wand. The new one is easier for me to hold 😉

      1. Maria J. says:

Well, I Love the original wand for my lower lashes, I buy the waterproof formula almost always and it still has somewhat of a wet formula so it doesn’t set so fast and is still easy to work with. I found this formula a bit on the drier side and that’s without buying waterproof. The brush is innovative I’ll give them that, but I wish the formula would’ve stayed the same.

        1. I’m not a waterproof user, but I find the formulas to be quite similar between the original and the new Butterfly. I am grateful that they revamped the wand so it’s easier for klutzes like me 😉

  3. Wait… What? I love Butterfly. I must get this and try it, immediately.

    1. If you could use the original, Erika, you may not need this one! But for a klutz like me, it was a necessity 😉

  4. I need to try this, if only for how different that wand looks! Great results!
Renu recently posted…Linziclip claw hair clips review, history, usage: FeatureMy Profile

    1. Renu, this is really a complete redesign, and it’s well worth trying. Fibers hidden in the formula, no flaking, and an easy to use wand: I think it has just about everything 🙂

  5. I’ve been wanting to try this mascara but I’m such a hardcore fan of the original Voluminous. It almost feels like I’m cheating.

    1. I haven’t tried the original Voluminous in the gold tube, is it? What is the wand like in that one?

  6. I have a thing for mascara. I own the original. I even bought a backup because I like the formula but I agree the wand makes application awkward for me. Because of this I find myself reaching for it less and less. Maybe the new wand will help me fall in love again. Currently I find myself using IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes! Extensions mascara the most.

    1. Laura, do you like the IT extensions mascara? Is it like the Younique fiber mascara? Just curious. I know what you mean about reaching for Butterfly less and less. I took a couple of months off, and then came back to it. But when I saw the new one, I was overjoyed. It’s a formula and now wand that works well for me.

  7. I’ve been dying to try this mascara!

  11. I haven’t tried Intenza, but I’m wearing the original butterfly mascara today and I like it. It took a bit to get use to the funky wand, but otherwise .. a nice mascara that I’d repurchase.

  12. I haven’t tried any mascara’s by L’oreal lately, but this brush looks very interesting!

  14. Laura says:

From what I understand the new IT Cosmetics Extensions mascara has nylon melted fibers in it. I am very impressed with how well it lengthens and the volume it provides is nice. At my age I need lengthening more than I do volume. I will say this… with other mascaras I find myself using two different brands. I do not feel the need with this one. The little ball on the end of the wand is not so big that it is difficult to use on the inner and outer lashes. I also like that the formula is not overly wet and that just the right amount of mascara comes out of the tube. NO flaking or smearing either. I get the length and volume that I look for in a mascara.
I bought the IT Cosmetics TSV on QVC a couple weeks ago and every product in it was a win for me. I am also super impressed with their waterproof eyeliner. I currently use their powder foundations. The only product that I have tried so far that I did not care for was their Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer. Way too tacky IMHO.

    1. Thank you, Laura. I saw the products that were on QVC, and it took real willpower to resist (since I’ve been buying a lot lately). I’m glad you got them. I was going to buy Bye Bye Under Eye but I ended up getting Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage instead. I have to review it soon.

Glad to learn about the IT Extensions mascara. Interesting that the fibers are nylon! That’s great that you’re getting the look you are after. I like getting length, although some volume is good too. I don’t have the patience to use 2 different mascaras at one time.

  15. That wand really intrigues me, it’s so unique! Must try this.

    1. It’s so much easier to use than the wand from the original Butterfly. Love this!

    1. I’m curious about what you think of the wand on the original Butterfly, Miranda. Could be that I am just a klutz, but probably there are others too since it was primarily the wand that they changed. I really like the formula of both versions.

  28. Laura says:

I own the L.M undercover pot. I have had it for a couple years and was bummed to discover the last time I went to use it that it was completely dried out. I am not a big fan of concealers these days. Seems I had more love for them more when I was younger but now I am just too lazy for that extra step. Which is why I like the IT Cosmetics powder foundations so much. They cover well and feel like nothing on my skin. Very easy for me to swirl on with a brush underneath my eye area.
I like the L.M concealer a lot better than Bye Bye so I think you made the better choice. 😉 The L.M. concealer brush is a nice one for application too. Oh and I love her caviar sticks!!!

    1. It doesn’t seem fair, Laura, especially with expensive makeup but a year is really the longest you can hope for (and should use since bacteria builds up unless it has parabens in it). The LM Secret Camouflage is a “stiff” formula, and I have to warm it up on my finger or hand before using. But it is longer lasting than others I was using before. The inexpensive NYX concealer is still one of my faves, but it isn’t as long lasting as the LM. I agree with you that powders cover best! I don’t own the IT powder foundation (just the CC cream), but Bare Minerals powder foundation still does the best job covering flaws. I have sun damage that I’m trying to fade (my freckles are almost gone, just not the more recent sun damage), and I often apply powder before my liquid foundation and conceal to help them work better (a trick from CoverFX) and it actually works. I will take a look at the IT Cosmetics powder foundation. I haven’t bought anything yet with my Ulta coupon & today or tomorrow is the last day!

  29. I haven’t seen this yet!! I want to try it out, I’m a mascara bulker? lol i just like buying mascara even though I don’t need it

Dani FromPolishwithLove recently posted…Llarowe: A Box-Indied “Spooky Indied” October swatches and review(partial)My Profile

    1. Dani, I need help with the falsies lol! My lashes are pretty long but they are blonde so mascara is a must for me. This is the best I’ve found in terms of both lengthening and volumizing among drugstore brands 🙂

  34. Laura says:

Bare Minerals used to be my fav but out of the blue I developed a sensitivity to bismuth. Guess allergies can develop out of the blue. All their powders & eye shadows make me want to scratch my face off. IT Cosmetics formula seems ‘moist’ to me and adheres to my skin better. Can you tell yet that I love the IT?? ha ha 🙂

    1. OMG, that sounds terrible, Laura! It’s really good that you were able to isolate the ingredient that was the culprit. I went to Ulta today, and I tried to find a clean area on the IT Cosmetics powder foundation to try. It seemed very nice and like a future contender for me. You’re going to laugh, I bought Bye Bye Under Eye in the tube! It really worked well for me for my dark circles because it wasn’t too heavy. The Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is stiffer, good for my dark spots, but too stiff and heavy for under my eyes. Just curious, which of the BBUE did you try: tube or little jar?

  35. It looks like such a great mascara !
betzy carmona recently posted…Dia De Los Muertos Nail PolishMy Profile

    1. It has worked out really well for me, Betzy. I liked the formula of the original one, and this seems to be the same formula but a much easier to use wand 🙂

  36. Laura says:

Too funny…I tried the Bye Bye tube. I am glad to hear it worked for you.
In the early 90’s I regularly used Revlon color stay concealer. It came in a tube and had a sponged wand. I loved how easy it was to apply and blend.
I dont recall when I read an interview with Isabella Rosellini but it was some years ago. She stated that she never used any under eye concealer away from the cameras. She never liked the shocked look people gave her when they saw her barefaced. I guess she has some dark circle issues and while she wears other makeup she doesnt hide her dark circles any more. That way when she is caught without it isnt a huge change. I dont know why that made me feel allowed to skip that step more and more. Maybe because I always thought she was so pretty??? 🙂

    1. That story about Isabella Rosellini is a hoot! She always has been an iconoclast, in a good way 😉 I never used concealer until recently, and I’m laughing that I need several different ones or at least different kinds. I never had sun damage which seems to require a heavier concealer (the LM Secret Camouflage) and the Bye Bye Under Eye, lighter weight (at least for me). I also own Amazing but I couldn’t get a good match shade wise, so the one I own – the lightest shade they had – is actually too light but it makes for a good highlighter under foundation. I think maybe Isabella and you have the right idea, just forget it! But right now, I’ve made too big an investment lol! Have a good weekend, Laura 🙂
