LotusRx Shampoo & Conditioner Giveaway for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

We’re in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and last week I wrote about how the disease touched my family. Today, I’d like to introduce you to a new-to-me haircare brand that is good not only for cancer patients and survivors, but for anyone with sensitive scalp, dandruff, or hair that could use some extra TLC including color-treated hair.

LotusRx Background and History

Let me give you some of the backstory of LotusRx because there are several fascinating threads that came together to create the LotusRx Hair Solution brand. Lotus Clinical was started by entrepreneur Katharine Grimmer in San Francisco in 2016. She has haircare in her blood, lol. Her grandfather, a dapper Englishman, was a hairdresser in London during the 1940s-50s at the tony Emile’s salon on fashionable Sloane Street. To serve his patrons, he made his own shampoos and hair pomades from botanical ingredients.

With an educational background in biology and work in the pharmaceutical industry, Katharine, whose hair had turned gray when she was young, decided to use her heritage and her skills to fill a gap in the haircare industry. Because she colored and also straightened her lovely long hair with Keratin treatments, she needed a dandruff shampoo to treat her itchy, flakey scalp.

There were no truly effective but gentle haircare products made from natural and sustainable ingredients that would treat her dandruff while preserving her salon hair color and Keratin straightening. So she decided to develop her own products, and LotusRx Hair Solution was born!

LotusRx is a family affair in oh-so-many ways. In fact, the name was inspired by Katharine’s mother who is a breast cancer survivor. During her mother’s first remission after treatment, Katharine and her sisters had planned to take their mother on a trip. Instead, her mom wanted to visit nearby historic Lotus Land Gardens in Santa Barbara to see the magical lotus flowers rise from the water gardens signifying simplicity, purity, balance, and harmony. The blue lotus became the name and symbol of Katharine’s new company.

LotusRx Shampoo and Conditioner

The mission of LotusRx Hair Solution:

“Lotus Rx was developed with the intent to effectively treat dandruff with prescription strength active ingredient while gently washing, nourishing and conditioning both hair and scalp. The sulfate free shampoo and conditioner system work together to balance color and retain protein without harsh chemicals that strip or dull hair.”

Pyrithione zinc is the active ingredient in both the LotusRx Shampoo and Conditioner that treats dandruff by slowing the production of skin cells thereby reducing flakes. The salon formulated haircare duo leave hair shiny, soft, manageable and also flake-free while protecting the color.

While perfect for those of us with color-treated hair either with or without dandruff, LotusRx Dandruff Control Shampoo and Scalp Relief Conditioner are so helpful to those who are going through cancer treatment. Both products contain the active ingredient, pyrithione zinc so they working so well together as a team. Katharine’s mother lost her hair during chemotherapy and developed “chemocap”, chemotherapy-induced seborrheic dermatitis characterized by flakey, itchy, sensitive red scalp. Her daughter’s LotusRx haircare solutions alleviated the chemocap via the active ingredient combined with the inflammation-reducing botanicals and moisturizing skin conditioners. Her scalp felt healthy again.

Over the past several months, I’ve noticed that a lot of haircare brands are coming out with scalp-oriented shampoos and conditioners. Well, LotusRx which launched their haircare duo over a year ago lead the way!

I’ve been using LotusRx Shampoo and Conditioner for a couple of weeks. I am lucky that I’m in good health and I don’t have dandruff, but I do have color-treated hair. Both the lightweight shampoo and rich conditioner are a creamy off-white. The shampoo lathers well but doesn’t produce an inordinate amount of suds. Here’s the shampoo:

The scent of sweet orange, white grapefruit and vanilla is mild and fresh. No heavy, cloying scents here. I’m a throwback in many ways, and I like to feel a slight squeak after I rinse out my shampoo: I get that from LotusRx Shampoo, yay. After drying my hair, it felt soft and nourished, and four days later, it still does! This duo gives salon haircare results, and doesn’t seem like therapeutic haircare.

This is a small thing, but I like the innovative tops on the plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles. You push down on the top, and the spout comes up. It’s just a little bit different from traditional tops, but I like this better.

Also, the plastic gives a little more than some hard plastic bottles making it easier to get the product out into my hand. Plus the bottles are manufactured with 97% post consumer materials. Nice.

Both bottles have a color-coded lotus blossom in addition to the words to identify Shampoo vs. Conditioner. The bottles each contain 8.45 fl. oz. and are priced at $30. They are sulfate-free, paraben-free, pH balanced, and they are not tested on animals. Check out the LotusRx website for additional details. LotusRx Shampoo and Conditioner are sold on the LotusRx website as well as on Amazon.
