I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the United States during the autumn. Leaf peepers come here in droves to see our beautiful foliage.
In the next state, New Hampshire, in the college town of Keene, there is the largest pumpkin festival with at least a thousand lit jack-o-lanterns. It’s an incredible sight.
And Halloween here in the ‘hood, my subdivision with a million kids, used to be a ton of fun when the kids were little and we had neighborhood Halloween parties.
However, I mostly dislike fall. It makes me sad. I looked back in my photo collection for some fall pix for this post, and I discovered that I have tons of summer and spring pictures, and a few winter pix, but almost no fall photos. That’s telling. The days are getting visibly shorter. And this year, September seems to be the coldest one I can remember. It has been freezing, so cold that I almost need to turn on the heat.
In spite of the fact that I love summer and the beach, there is something to be said for fall fashions and makeup. The fabrics are richer, and the hues are deeper and more brilliant.
To keep my spirits up, lol, I’ve been eying and occasionally buying new makeup for fall.
Fall Makeup Color Trends
The fall color trends that interest me most are:
- wine shades
- jewel tones
- metallics: silver, copper, bronze, rose gold, gold, burnished gold
- greys and navy blues
- deep mauves.
Fall Makeup 2014
My Fall Makeup
Here’s just a few of the products I got for fall so far: an assortment of affordable brands.
Milani Limited Edition Constellation Gel Eyeliners
Milani has just launched a limited edition collection called Bedazzled, made up of eyeliners, nail lacquers and matte lipsticks. Earlier this week, I reviewed the three jewel-toned and shimmery, easy to apply gel eyeliners – Lapis, Emerald and Black Opal. Check out my full review here. In addition to being available at select CVS and Walgreens, the Bedazzled collection is available on the Milani website.
Milani Limited Edition Bedazzled Color Statement Nail Lacquer
In that same review, you’ll get my thoughts on this stunning garnet nail lacquer from Milani. This polish definitely says autumn to me. It’s so rich and brilliant. Seek this one out at select CVS and Walgreens stores or online at the Milani website. It’s priced at $3.99. There are two other shades, Enchanted Sapphire – a deep blue and Enchanted Emerald – a deep green, that I haven’t tried. In the bottle, at least, the garnet seems to be the most beautiful of the three.
Milani Limited Edition Bedazzled Matte Lip Art
Part of the Bedazzled collection, Milani’s new LE matte lipsticks are Enchanted Ruby that I just purchased, Enchanted Topaz (nude) and Enchanted Amethyst, a medium purple shade. Enchanted Ruby is matte but not at all drying. I love the deep blue-red shade. The price on this at CVS was $6.29, but on the Milani website, it’s priced at $4.19 – big difference but there’s shipping. It should also be available at select Walgreens.
I also acquired two other wine/jewel toned lipsticks for fall in shades very close to the Milani Enchanted Rudy. What was I thinking!
- Hikari Lipstick,$13, in Cabernet, a rich red wine, that I got in my September ipsy bag
- Wet ‘n Wild Limited Edition All Access Beauty MegaLast Matte Lipstick in Urban Night, a deep red wine, available at select Walgreens for $1.99. I reviewed it a couple of weeks ago here.
Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Shadows
In Milani’s new permanent collection of Bella Eyes Gel Powder Shadows that was introduced in July (reviewed here), there are lots and lots of shades that are great for fall: metallics, lots of brown shades, greys, jewel tones etc. At $3.99, they are an easy way to freshen up your fall makeup stash.
I adored the original Zoya Naturels collection, and I knew I had to have some of the new Naturels 2 for fall. So far, I purchased Madeline, a muted rose cream, and Aubrey, a medium mauve, that are deeper versions in the same color family as mauve Brigitte, that I bought during the spring. I have to find time to do a gradient mani with the three shades.
On my Wish List is camel-colored Spencer that’s also part of the Naturels 2 collection that will be a great addition to my collection of nude polishes.
Zoya Naturels 2 are $9, 0.5 fl. oz. and are 5-free.
theBalm How ‘Bout Them Apples? Lip & Cheek Palette
Fall is all about pumpkins…and apples, of course! So it was appropriate to finally pick up theBalm’s cream lip and cheek palette with its ode to apples. I received a sample in a single shade, Pie, from Kohl’s during the spring, and it is one of the blushes I reach for most often. I like the fact that this collection has deeper shades and shades that tend to caramel that will be just right for cooler weather. Priced at $32.
Wet ‘n Wild Limited Edition Smoke & Melrose Coloricon 5-Pan Palette
I passed on Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette, so I was thrilled to see that Wet ‘n Wild’s limited edition Smoke and Melrose at Night were just about dupes for some of the UD shades. As I mentioned, metallics are on trend again for fall, and I adore rose gold. The Smoke & Melrose that I found on sale for $2 at Walgreens was a steal. It’s buttery and easy to apply. Find ’em before they’re gone. Here’s my review.
My Fall Wish List
Not surprisingly, my Wish List is made up of prestige brands that I am waiting to buy during Ulta’s 20% off event in November or through Sephora.com using ebates or, if I’m really lucky, that I’ll receive as a gift!
I have dry eyelids so I love cream shadows. But I loved cream shadows even before I had dry eyelids. And I fell in love with the three cream shadows as well as the unique green and gold nail varnish, Melange, from Illamasqua’s romantic new Once Collection. Maybe it was the redheaded model that caught my attention,
or maybe it was the fact that the palette is muted and golden. I love it. Unfortunately, Sephora doesn’t sell Illamasqua any longer. It must be purchased on the Illamasqua website site, and it can be priced out in US dollars or British pounds. The cream shadows are $26.77 and the gorgeous nail varnish, Melange is $23.77.

Although I think this shadow palette from Urban Decay is a little too bright for me, I think it’s a beautiful and versatile palette that fits in with the trend toward deep, jewel tones this fall. I haven’t seen it in person yet — why didn’t I look at it today when I was at Ulta?
It has 20 shades including shades great for fall like burgundy or smokey red black. It’s priced at $60. And I love the look and design of its case.
Urban Decay Ten Glide-On Pencil Set
I have a lot of Urban Decay eyeliner pencils, but I love them and I use them almost everyday. I would love this new set because it has colors that I don’t have and I think will be great for fall and for the holiday season.
And they are the shorter length. For me, that’s a plus. I will never use up a full size gold or teal pencil. These are perfect. The shades are Perversion (blackest black matte), Glitter Rock (metallic pink w/pink multidimensional sparkle), Moonspoon (metallic gray w/silver sparkle), Vacancy (bright metallic teal), Faint (warm taupe matte), Gonzo (electric blue matte w/tonal shimmer), Smokeout (rich taupe-black satin), Mugshot (light metallic taupe w/slight pink shift), Stargazer (soft metallic gold w/dimensional sparkle) and Voodoo (bright metallic purple w/dimensional sparkle). The price is $52.
Smashbox Cherry Smoke Eye Shadow Palette
As you can tell, I’ve got a trend going. I love the neutral-ish brown, gold, rose gold shade. And Smashbox has one for fall. Even the name, Cherry Smoke, appeals to me. $39 for 8 shadows that are a mix of mattes and shimmers. Yum.
MAC Rocky Horror Collection
Last but not least, I must have a lipstick from MAC’s Rocky Horror Collection that is launching in MAC stores and online on October 2. There are four gorgeous shades of red in exceedingly fun tubes with the RH logo, each $17.50. Although I love all four shades, I covet Dr. Frank-N-Furter because I will never forget Tim Curry in his prime.
I have no idea how to actually succeed in getting a MAC limited edition before it sells out, but I will give it a try.
So these are my recommendations. What have you bought so far for fall? What’s on your fall Wish List?
This is my first time participating in a new group of beauty bloggers, The Beauty Council, each of whom has her own unique POV.
Today’s theme is Fall Beauty Buys. Below, you can click on the links and get to meet the group and get their recommendations for the Best Buys for Fall!
Great Post!!!! full of all kinds of makeup inspiration! I keep meaning to check out the Milani displays in mt local drugstores. I seldom go anymore since I buy a lot online. I used to feel sad during the Fall too. Thankfully that has changed for me in recent years.
The Milani products for fall and summer too are quite gorgeous and a great deal, I think. Glad Fall doesn’t bother you anymore. If it didn’t start getting dark so much earlier, I might not feel so bad. I begin to feel trapped in the house. But I do like the foliage, apple cider doughnuts, and Halloween so I better cheer up. But I’m hoping for one more day at the beach this weekend 😉
What an amazing post! Chock full of temptation thanks for that! Not! BTW I found the Wet n wild melrose palette at a random Walgreens and bought 2. Thanks to you, really ! Speaking of temptation, I just say a post of the new Gucci makeup and the purple eye quad is calling my name. Have you seen any of the line in person? If so, opinions please. Very expensive, however is it worth it? Xo Linda
Linda, I haven’t seen the Gucci line in person yet. Perhaps when I go into Boston to get my hair colored in a couple of weeks, I’ll stop into Saks or Neimans and see if they are there. I’m trying to restrain myself. Temptalia reviewed them either yesterday or the day before. Kath The Fabzilla said she ordered one of the quads but hasn’t received it yet. How can you go wrong, right? A splurge. So glad that you found the WnW palette. I really do love the Smoke and Melrose palette: the gold “crease” shade is my fave! Let me know if you end up going for the Gucci
So many fall things I want! I used to live in Keene. We’d always take the kids to the Pumpkin Fest when they were little. It was just so mobbed though!
Amber recently posted…China Glaze Lug Your Designer Baggage
You’re right, Amber. So weird that we had to take a bus into Keene from the parking lots. But it was worth it. I would love to go again!
Temptations indeed! I wish to experience autumn or fall someday! We only have two seasons here: Sunny and rainy! Heehee.

I was never a fan of Fall until I moved to Florida and now I love it haha. My “fall” is still 80 degrees but with a nice breeze and less crowded beaches hehe. I have been meaning to pick up some of those Bella shadows they look so gorgeous!
Leigh recently posted…Studio 35 Beauty Face Cream with 8% AHA Review, Photos and Swatches
I’m with you, Leigh. I need to head south one of these days. The Bella Shadows are gorgeous. Do it
I drove through Washington state during Hallowe’en once and it was brilliant, with a gazillion pumpkins and themed gardens and orchards.
I have been eyeing theBalm’s lip and cheek palette, but as a rule I prefer using creamy products on the lips rather than cheeks and those aren’t my favourite lip colours. The Zoya polishes and Smoke and Melrose are on my wishlist!

Halloween definitely is a fun time especially in the parts of the US that have a real autumn season. Although it snowed on Halloween a few years ago and that can kind of wreck the mood 😉
Now that I have drooled and shorted out my keyboard…

What a cute cheek palette by the Balm! I’m usually not a fan of their line as I think it’s expensive for cardboard packaging, but it is really cute packaging .. lol.

I had no idea New Hampshire was so beautiful! I will have to visit sometime. I agree about Fall. Sad that days are getting shorter…time for me to hibernate for the winter soon!
Justina recently posted…My Holiday Beauty Wishlist
Yes, Justina, all of New England — my state Massachusetts — as well as NH, VT, Maine, Rhode Island and CT and New York state too are gorgeous in the fall because the sugar maple trees have the most incredible fall foliage. Worth a visit some day!
I love your list! I can’t wait to get the Lorac Pro Mega!
Natalye recently posted…Kat Von D: Chrysalis Palette Review and Swatches
The Lorac Pro Mega is one hella palette! enjoy it, Natalye!!
I want a couple of those Wet N Wild palettes but they are so hard to find in my area! Evil stores…. LOL
I’ll come leaf-peep in your neck of the woods anytime! Autumn is my favourite season. Pretty (and crunchy!) leaves, and pumpkins, and caramel apples…. Sweaters and boots and bonfires! And of course we can’t forget Halloween either. 😀 I’ve always got a pile of pumpkins even if I’m not intending on carving them up. I can’t help it. It’s a compulsion. I’ll be driving down the road and then I’m all “ooooooo pumpkins!” and before I know it there are like 5 orange, 2 red, and some assorted green and white all piled on the front porch. I usually save some of the seeds, and one of these years I’m going to have quite a riotous pumpkin patch of my own.
Please do come on up, Rach! I’m hoping for one last beach weekend this weekend if the temps cooperate. But the leaves are definitely starting to turn, and I’ve got my pumpkin. And I definitely need to wear a sweater because the house is freezing 😉 I’d love to see your pumpkin pile on the front porch. Sounds awesome!! Hope you can find the WnW palettes. I found a full display about a month ago when I got mine but I only chose one and they were half price!
Awesome picks lady xoxo

Now that I live in Florida, I live for Fall – I’m so tired of the crazy hot weather. My hair is finally not frizzy every day, and I can open up the house and not have to have the A/C on 24/7, so my power bills go way down! I just ordered that smashbox Cherry Smoke palette today – those colors really speak to me!

Yes, Florida is tough to take in the summer. I couldn’t do it. But I dread winter here too. Lucky you actually getting the Smashbox palette. Look forward to your post on it

Allison, what a wonderful post! So many new things for me to try while the days get shorter and I too stay inside :(. I’m with you that the fall is beautiful but the days getting shorter really starts to depress me. I have already turned on the heat a few times (to get the chill out of the house) and yet today and tomorrow are going to be in the 80’s? I LOVE the fall colors and I do start to wear more make-up in the fall…so time to start shopping (can I send the bill to you though?).
Your comments are always so cute, Lois! Thank you. The Ulta 20% off coupon that includes prestige comes in November so wait for it, maybe? Also, Hautelook has been having some great deals
Great picks but I’ll pass on the gel liners.
Thanks, Melody. Don’t worry, no one will make you try the gel liners, lol 😉
Love these Fall beauty trends! ESP. The lip balm with hunky men 🙂
LOL, good choice Melissa!
