Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo & Conditioner

Malibu Professional Hard Water Treatment

Every few months before she recolors my hair, my colorist gives my hair a Malibu treatment. A Malibu is a professional treatment that removes mineral deposits that accumulate from the hard water in my area when I wash my hair at home. Not only does the Malibu treatment remove the minerals, it also removes some of the color build up on my hair. As a result, my “new” color looks fresher and more vibrant.

In addition to the professional Malibu treatment, there is an at-home version of the Malibu Hard Water Treatment called the Mini Malibu Rehab Hard Water Wellness, a duo pack that comes with a mineral deposit remover and a Miracle Repair. I have never tried the at-home version because I trust Laurel to do it for me at the salon. It’s a fairly big process where she washes my hair, dries it, paints on the chemical remover, I sit under the heat for about a half hour, and then she washes it off. After the process is completed, then she starts the new color.

After a zillion years, I just became aware of Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner. At my last appointment, I finally asked my colorist if I should try it. Although she didn’t recommend my using the at-home Malibu treatment, she suggested that I give the shampoo and conditioner a try.

I ordered it from FragranceNet.com where I got 30% off (Shampoo but now the Conditioner is out of stock), and it arrived within a few days.

Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo & Conditioner

The Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner come in two sizes: 9 oz./$17 and 33.8 oz./$38. Since I hadn’t used either one, I ordered the small size that I think is still pretty big. The two product are a pair – the Shampoo sits right side up and the Conditioner is upside down.

Both products smell delightful! The scent is called Orange Dreamsicle, and it is very light. I do smell it to some extent while I am using it, but it doesn’t last beyond the shampoo.

The Shampoo is clear, and it doesn’t lather up a lot. It’s easy to rinse out.

The Conditioner is white, and it is thinner than the JOICO K-PAK Luster-Lock Instant Shine & Repair Treatment that I had been using for years.

My Results

I’ve been using Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo & Conditioner for four times now. Before starting to use the Malibu Hard Water, I had been limiting washing my hair to every 5 days so that it wouldn’t be exposed to the minerals in my water. Since using the Malibu, I have tried to keep it to the same time frame, every 5 days.

Over the past couple of month, I changed the rinse that goes on top of my color to tone down the color. So I do have to keep that in mind.

I think I would say that my hair color hasn’t faded quite as much. Red fades so much, so it’s hard for me to tell. When I get my color done at the end of next week, I will ask Laurel what she thinks.

However, I don’t love this shampoo and conditioner all that much. My hair doesn’t feel as soft and shiny as it did when I washed it with Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and conditioned it with JOICO K-PAK Color Therapy Luster-Lock Instant Shine & Repair Treatment. By the end of the 5 days, it definitely seems to need to be washed.

Here’s day 3 (I have no makeup on, and I could use it):

Do you live in an area with hard water? If so, what if anything do you do to prevent it from fading your hair?
