Though I don’t buy in to that old makeup rule that women of a certain age must stick to matte eyeshadow, I was nevertheless psyched to receive Mally’s Mattes Eyeshadow Palette to test-drive.
Because I love the Mally makeup that I have tried so far (like the gorgeous multi-colored Mallywood Highlighting Blush palette compact that I reviewed a couple of weeks ago as well as the Mally Beauty Evercolor Shadow Stick Extra that I still adore after about 2 years), I was truly looking forward to trying Mally’s pressed shadows.
Another thing is the size of the palette. Truth be told, I get overwhelmed by the huge palettes that seem to be everywhere these days. The smaller size is a plus for travel. In fact, I took Mally’s Mattes with me last weekend when we took our mini-vacay to the Berkshires. But because of the wearability of the shades in this palette, this is the palette I’ve been reaching for most often since I got it.
The Mally’s Mattes Eyeshadow Palette, created by Mally herself, is made up of neutral matte shades that can go from daytime to nighttime because the shades come in light, medium and deep shades that you can mix and match according to your mood or occasion. Speaking of mix and match, the 8 pans are a mix of warm and cool-toned shades. In addition to the 6 smaller pans, there are two larger pans that can be used as shadows or for highlighting the inner corner (True) and contouring (Quirky). I don’t contour too often because the shades are often too dark for me. Quirky is just right, and it makes a nice shadow shade, too.
The shades are:
- Brave (matte pink/nude)
- Confident (matte burnt orange)
- Strong (matte dark brown)
- Daring (matte grey-beige)
- Classy (matte earthy brown)
- Bold (matte navy blue)
- True (matte ivory cream)
- Quirky (matte nude caramel)
I love Bold, the navy blue shade as an eyeliner too.
My favorite shades for my life here in the Massachusetts ‘burbs where most women don’t wear makeup are Brave, Daring, Classy, and Quirky because they look pretty but they don’t scream. In fact, Mally’s Mattes is a great accompaniment to the Smashbox glitter palette that I just got in my new full size product Ipsy Glam Bag Plus that inexplicably doesn’t come with even one matte shade.
The shadows are nicely pigmented. They don’t kick up a lot of powder, except maybe a tiny bit in the pan. But on my eyes, there’s no fallout whatsoever. The shades feel smooth and velvety, and are easy to blend.
I wear all eyeshadows over primer, and that’s how I wear these. They last till I take them off.
The palette itself is made from sturdy cardboard, and it comes with a large, usable mirror.

I’m all about matte shadows. This has a nice mix of colors. I hadn’t heard of this brand before!
That’s a great price for this palette. I’m not big on mattes but they are a necessity and I wear at least one matte shade each day.

I love this mix of warm and cool hues – after that absolute deluge of warm-toned palettes. And, nice mix of colours for neutral and smoky looks as well. This would be good for around-the-year wear.
The Mally’s Mattes, portable neutral matte palette, is a good palette for me especially for travel.
I could see classy being a good crease shade!
