I love the Melt eyeshadow stack that I bought early in 2019 (reviewed here). The shadows are buttery, easy to blend with no fallout, and the innovative packaging is fabulous.

So when I saw the sale on lipgloss for $5 (regular price $16) including free shipping on the website during Cyber week, I decided to check it out. I think all 8 gorgeous shades were available to choose from, but one definitely caught my eye: Séance, a lovely rose gold metallic that Melt describes as rosy-mauve. On the website, the gloss looked shiny and opaque, and that’s what I prefer when it comes to lipgloss.

The gloss arrived in two days because I think Melt treated me to priority shipping.

Melt Metal Gloss Séance came in a pretty pink metallic cardboard box (the lighting is making the box look orange, but it’s raspberry pink). The tube is an attractive matte black like the gorgeous shadow stack I own.

There’s a window on the side of the tube that lets you see the gloss so you have an idea how much is left. I think that’s great.

The applicator is slightly angled and maybe a tiny bit longer than some other applicators I’ve used. The angle makes it easy to apply the gloss.

Séance, the rosy shade, is very pretty, especially in person. It is definitely a pink rose shade. (The indoor light is definitely changing the color, but we’ve had almost no sunlight or even daylight lately!) When I first saw it, I thought it looked very familiar, like it might be the same shade as another metallic gloss I bought recently from Sephora Collection (reviewed here) called Cream Lip Shine in the shade Frosted Peach #30. Fortunately, it is different. Frosted Peach is deeper and decidedly more copper or orange-red, while Séance is lighter and rosy, a pinkish shade…though the lighting definitely has altered the look of both shades. I’m happy to have them both. (BTW, Sephora has introduced a whole bunch of new metallics to the Cream Lip Shine collection, and now Sun Stone looks like the replacement for Frosted Peach.)

I was eager to try Séance, and I wore it soon after it arrived. Just so you know, it has a caramel fragrance that is definitely noticeable but that fades within a few minutes.

It’s a medium weight gloss that very creamy, and not especially sticky considering it’s a gloss.

I applied Melt Metal Gloss, Séance, with no lip primer, no lipliner. I just went for it. I thought it looked so pretty.

Several hours later after coming home from doing errands, I looked in the mirror to see how Melt Metal Gloss was wearing, and I was horrified to see that it had settled into my lip lines. Ugh. I couldn’t believe I was walking around like that. It looked awful.

I decided to try it the next day with lipliner pencil. It did better, but still some wandered outside of my lips. Disappointing.

It does better still with the Milani Anti-Feathering Universal Lipliner pencil (currently on sale for $3.49 on the Milani website) that is a clear, waxy pencil. I will have to remember to make sure I use that when I wear Melt Metal Gloss.

Nevertheless, I am disappointed. I’m glad I only paid $5 for Melt Metal Gloss, Séance rather than $16. Although I will continue to wear it around the house, I don’t think I would trust it enough to wear it out.

Have you had any recent makeup meltdowns?

  1. Such a beautiful color! But I don’t think I’d want to have to bother with the spreading issues… I’ll pass on this brand. Thanks for the honest review!!

    1. I was so disappointed with its “looser” consistency that gives it the tendency to wander beyond my lipliner. The shade is so pretty 🙁

    1. Thank you, Helen! Both are great shades, just wish the Melt gloss didn’t have such a “loose” consistency so that it wanders.

  3. I’m glad that it only cost you $5 since it’s so disappointing. Since I don’t wear lip color around the house I’d have to toss it.

    1. Sounds weird, I know, that I wear lipstick around the house. I figure as long as I’m wearing something on my lips to keep them hydrated, it may as well have some color in it and look pretty 😉

  4. Metallic lipsticks always look bad on me–they seem to settle into my lip lines and just look gross.

    1. This one from Melt does exactly that, perhaps because the consistency is “looser”. First time it’s ever happened to me with a gloss. Thankfully, ABH, Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain, Revlon, and Mirabella don’t.

  5. Sorry to hear the formula migrates on you. The coppery shade looks so pretty with your hair color.

  6. I started out so excited for you and thought I had found a new lip gloss to try. By the end I was glad I’ve never decided to try it. I do wonder how it would work A. with a lip primer like the Mac Prep + Prime Lip Primer and B. as a topper over a regular lipstick, kind of in the middle of the lip if you know what I mean. I will not be spending $16 to find out though lol.

    1. Thanks, Cassie, for the suggestions. I have never tried MAC Prep + Prime Lip Primer before – is it drying? That might be a good solution. I seldom wear gloss on top of lipstick (that’s why I like the opaque glosses), but I will try it and see if I just use it in the center, if it will stay. For opaque gloss, I will stick with ABH, Burt’s Bees and Sephora Collection Cream Lip from now on!
