Mitch Stone Essentials Lustre Shampoo and Conditioner

The young stylist at Vidal Sassoon told me that my hair is in good shape! I thought it was very dry and damaged, but she assured me it only had dry ends. Yay! I’ve been working hard at trying to cure the dryness, and I guess I’m succeeding. That said, it made me nervous to try a new brand that was sent to me for review.

This is a new brand to me. I also wasn’t aware of celebrity hair stylist and great-looking California guy, Mitch Stone. The Mitch Stone Essentials duo contains VCompS, a proprietary vitamin-rich blend for healthy, shiny hair. The skeptic in me said to myself, OK, most haircare products have something that’s unique to them.

I felt good learning that the Lustre Shampoo is sulfate-free and safe for color-treated hair like mine. So I tried it. First, Mitch Stone Essentials 456 Lustre Shampoo has the most divine scent. I think it smells like papayas. Heaven. You can smell it while you’re shampooing, but it doesn’t stay behind in your hair. Second, it has a different consistency: it is a very thick, not quite clear gel. I squeezed some out of the tube, rubbed it in my hands with a little water and then applied it to my hair. Mitch Stone Essentials Shampoo does not make a lot of lather, but it does make some. I shampooed and rinsed it out. It doesn’t make hair squeaky clean, and that was a bit difficult for me since I grew up during the days of squeaky clean hair. I tried a second shampooing and rinsing just to see if it would get squeaky, but it didn’t. It contains good-for-hair oils, so the good news is that it doesn’t strip the hair.

I moved on to the 457 Lustre Conditioner. It also has a fabulous scent that’s different from the shampoo scent. I did’t know how to describe this one, but the Mitch Stone website says the scent is a combination of plumeria, passionfruit and coconut. Both haircare products smell like Hawaii to me! I applied the keratin-based conditioner, left it on while I shaved my legs, and rinsed it out.

I did do the rest of my haircare routine as I always do, using John Frieda 3 Days Straight to prevent frizz and a little Living Proof Instant Repair on my ends. Then I blow dried and flat ironed my hair as usual. It feels like silk! I can easily run my fingers through my hair with no tangles at all, all the way through to the ends. Often with my other shampoos and conditioners, the ends feel tangled. Wonderful results from Mitch Stone Essentials! I’m very impressed!

    1. Yes, I remember reading your review about a week ago or so. You definitely had great results. I’d like to try the Lustre Drops too!

  3. Sounds like a nice line of hair products. I’m from the full lather and squeaky clean hair era too. They seem to be coming out with so many new sulfate free ones now. I’ve tried a few and they’ve been hit or miss. I haven’t heard of this line. I’ll look into it.

    1. The folks at Mitch Stone told me that squeaky hair means the hair is stripped, but I do have a couple of shampoos that give me the squeak and my hair doesn’t seem bad afterwards, though maybe that’s why I had the “crispy ends” this summer from using a shampoo that stripped my hair. Who knows! But I will try to get used to this because my hair really did come out great.

  4. I love shampoos with fruity scents. They are my absolute fave. (And I adore your hair color!)

    1. Thank you so much, Lisa! I told the colorist to take the color up a notch for the winter. I needed a lift

  5. I love that the shampoo smells like papaya and that it contains oils. My hair gets so dry in the winter that I have to be careful with the products that i use. This line sounds like it would be god for me.

    1. You should look into it, Aleya. The products are both gentle and hydrating! There’s a 20% off sale plus Ebates on the folica.com site now.

  6. Ooo, the conditioner is “Inspired by the quintessential Californian lifestyle embodied by Malibu” … now I have to try this product for sure 🙂

I’m trying to be good and use up some items so I can try new products this year.

    1. Yes, that’s what it said! I chuckled. But then Mitch does look like a California guy minus the blonde hair. At any rate, these haircare products are worth remembering for the future. Very nourishing. Finally, my crispy ends are gone.

  7. The scent sounds incredible! I’m always hating on my hair too, then every stylist I see raves about it’s silky texture. Idk, I think it’s their water or something I can’t ever get it to look the way it does after I leave the salon lol

    1. My ends were definitely “crispy” back in September, and my colorist mentioned it and asked me what I was doing that was ruining my hair, lol! But now after cutting off a few inches and switching to different haircare products, my crispy ends are gone, thank goodness. These heavenly smelling haircare products from Mitch Stone really are lovely

  8. Your hair looks AMAZING! I must say that the “squeaky clean” feeling not being left behind make me feel skeptic… but if it smells good and has “good for hair oils”, I can get on board. 🙂

    1. Yes, I was a firm believer in squeaky clean, but the folks at Mitch Stone told me that squeaky hair is stripped hair, and they may well be right. I had crispy ends for the longest time, and switching to different haircare products seems to have made a difference.

      1. That is really good to know. I have been using Hask, and so far, it’s been giving my hair the right feeling. I have been going days without washing, and THAT has really helped my scalp and hair.

        1. I’ve been hearing such good things about Hask. If I didn’t have so many shampoos and conditioners, I’d try out Hask – someday when I make it through my extensive stash 😉

  9. I have the texturizing spray and it adds much needed volume to my hair.

  10. I wanted to try this brand out but the fragrance sounds too strong for me. Your hair looks very silky in your picture.
MarciaF recently posted…Walking on the wild side with Lipstick QueenMy Profile

    1. Marcia, both the shampoo and the conditioner have relatively strong, fruity scents when they come out of the tube and go onto your hair (for me, it’s a positive), but the scents don’t last. I wouldn’t recommend these for you since you prefer unscented and these scents are part of the experience, and probably not a part that you’d enjoy. I haven’t tried the Lustre Drops that the others seem to like a lot, so I don’t know if they are scented or not, but I’m guessing that the scent experience is part of this California brand. I was told the shampoo/conditioner were “born on Kawai” so I have a feeling the line is scented.

  11. This sounds lovely Allison and like you, I have never heard of this brand before. One thing I have to point out though, I went over to the website and couldn’t find any shipping information. I wonder if they ship to Canada or US only… :-/
Shireen L. Platt recently posted…Chop Those Chaps with ChopSaver Lip CareMy Profile

    1. Shireen, I checked folica.com where there’s a 20% off sale on the entire site plus 6% cash back from Ebates, but shipping to Canada is $22.95!!! I couldn’t believe it, but then I could because I did a couple of giveaway that included Canada and the shipping cost me a fortune. I looked at the Mitch Stone website, and the site explicitly says free shipping to the continental US so shipping is extra to Hawaii and Alaska, so I would assume they would charge for shipping to Canada as does folic.com. Not fair!! The products are sold on Amazon, I believe, though they aren’t authorized through the Mitch Stone business. I’m sorry!

      1. Thank you so much for checking, Allison and it’s much appreciated! And holy cow, shipping is that pricey?! Ridiculous! 🙁
Shireen L. Platt recently posted…Chop Those Chaps with ChopSaver Lip CareMy Profile

        1. Unfortunately, it can be, Shireen, especially shipping something heavy like shampoo and conditioner that’s liquid – it weighs a lot! That’s the reason why my giveaways are US only. I don’t make enough money on my blog to pay expensive international shipping and Canada, though now that far away from me in New England still costs a lot 🙁

  12. I so want to try this! It seems like it’s harder and harder to find a good sulfate free shampoo. The scent sounds pretty amazing too- always a plus!

  13. I enjoyed your shampoo and conditioner review! Plus your hair look very vibrant in the picture!

    Ursula

    1. Thank you, Ursula. I had my colorist take the color up a notch. I needed some brightness this winter 🙂

  14. This sounds like a line that I may want to try. I am all about that lather and squeaky clean too… but found over the last few years that it was stripping my hair and causing my natural curls to get really dry and looking like a frizz ball so I have found that I now know what products work best for me. This still sounds like something I would try out though… 🙂
Honeygirlk recently posted…Foreo ISSA Hybrid Brush Head #ISSAaccessoriesMy Profile

    1. Yes, it is a hair revelation that gives great results, but I do miss lots of suds (tho the Mitch Stone shampoo does make enough suds) and the squeak.

  15. Your hair is so gorgeous and vibrant! The smell of this product sounds perfect for me; and love that the scent doesn’t really linger.
