Molton Brown Bizarre Brandy Shower Gel for Holiday 2019

I Bought This - Affiliate links

I’ve written recently and about a million times how much I adore Molton Brown’s limited edition scent from last holiday season, 2018: Muddled Plum. Definitely my best find in 2019 (reviewed again here). I loved it so much I bought the shower gel, body lotion and EDT as well as backups in case they don’t bring it back.

This past holiday season, Molton Brown’s new scent was Bizarre Brandy. The holiday limited edition scents are usually positioned as gender-neutral fragrances that are related to the scents of the holiday season. It’s described as an Oriental spicy scent for women and men which is definitely my jam. The brandy sounded very appealing. I usually love brandy, cognac, bourbon type scents, so it sounded like it might suit me. Fragrantic listed the main accords as: woody, warm spicy, coffee, sweet, tobacco. Three out of the 5 accords sounded very promising, though I wasn’t so sure about woody and tobacco.

The notes were listed as:

  • top notes: cardamom, orange, ginger, cinnamon
  • middle notes: brandy, coffee, maple
  • base notes: incense, cedar, tobacco

The top and middle notes were perfect for me, whereas the base notes were questionable. Plus, I was considering buying the shower gel, not the eau de toilette. The shower gel is a lovely copper color with shimmer in the gel like the Muddled Plum has, though the shimmer does not show up on the skin.

I read several positive reviews on blogs as well as watched a rave review from a YouTuber who reviews a lot of fragrances. Then I read the reviews on the Molton Brown website. Though the vast majority liked it, the reviews were polarizing, some loved it and others not so much. Yet there wasn’t truly a pattern as to who didn’t like it. A few women felt it was more masculine than Muddled Plum and too masculine for them, but a few men found the gourmand notes to be too feminine. Others thought it was perfect.

Since it was on sale for $24.50 after the holiday for 30% off with free shipping, I thought I might as well give it a try. And it’s still on sale for the discounted price.

It arrived at the end of last week, and sadly it was a fail for me. While it smells like holiday gingerbread and a hot toddy mixed together, there are some decidedly masculine notes (probably the cedar and tobacco?) that make it too manly and not a good fit for me. I hoped I could get used to it, but I couldn’t.

I asked Jeff if he would like it, and I was happy that he said yes. He doesn’t have the greatest sense of smell, so I wasn’t sure if he liked the scent or just didn’t notice it. At any rate, it helped make his dry skin silky and smooth. Success!

So if you’re looking for a gift for a guy (V-day, maybe?) who likes a spicy Oriental scent with a little sweetness to it or if you like the notes yourself, Bizarre Brandy well worth the price.

Molton Brown Jasmine & Sun Rose Shower Gel

Molton Brown always offers a one ounce sample bottle of another shower gel when you purchase from them online. They give you a few scents to choose from. Since I had tried a couple of the other choices, I went with Jasmine & Sun Rose.

The shower gel is a pale peach shade. The scent is fruity and floral and definitely a feminine scent. To me, there’s a sharpness to it that I don’t love, but it has a brightness to it that is quite appealing especially in the morning.

  • Top notes: raspberry, bergamot and peach.
  • Heart notes: jasmine, osmanthus and rose.
  • Base notes: labdanum, patchouli and musk.

I’m not a fan of jasmine scent (though the flowers themselves are lovely), but thankfully the jasmine isn’t overly strong. The raspberry may be the sharp scent that I’m not sure about. At any rate, since it’s only a one ounce mini-bottle, I will finish it, but I won’t order a full bottle. If you’re a fan of fruits and florals, you may like Jasmine & Sun Rose very much.

Have you tried any of these Molton Brown scents? Do you have a favorite MB scent?

    1. You know, I can’t smell it on him. Molton Brown smells strongly in the shower, but the scent doesn’t really linger. That’s why I layer the Muddled Plum scent that I love
