I guess the partnership between the Frida Kahlo Corporation and brands isn’t limited to Ulta and Vans. My friend and sister blogger, Marcia from BeautyInfoZone, generously sent me a Frida Kahlo lipstick from Republic Cosmetics US (a makeup brand I’ve never heard of) that she got at CVS. How wonderful of her to think of me!
And it is a red lipstick – definitely the shade favored by Frida and by me! The shade is called Catrina, and it is a cool-toned blue-red. Sadly, it is sold out on the Republic Cosmetics US website. I’m lucky that Marcia found this at CVS. I haven’t seen this collection at any CVS stores near me. But Catrina and two other shades are available at CVS.com for $8.49.
The lipstick is a lightweight matte. It’s a traditional bullet-style lipstick that I favor. It comes in a cardboard case that’s black with the iconic illustration of Frida wearing the sugar skull makeup for the Day of the Dead on one side and her signature on the other side.
The matte lipstick is opaque in two swipes (the swatch below is one swipe), and it lasts for about 4 hours before it starts to fade slightly.
It’s neither hydrating nor drying, though for me anything that isn’t overtly hydrating is a little drying after a day’s wear. But that’s just me. After eating Jeff’s birthday dinner, you could still tell that I was wearing red lipstick. I would describe it as good quality.
So after doing a little sleuthing, the Frida Kahlo lipstick from Republic Cosmetics US that’s sold at CVS is part of a cruelty-free collection of 12 shades of lipstick, all of which are various shades of red, with cases showing different Kahlo art works and about 28 shades of nail polish with different Frida Kahlo artwork on the handles. There are also nail files and other nail tools. The Frida Kahlo collection has been around since at least the end of 2016 because I saw them on another blogger’s website and the date was December 2016. Nevertheless, they still show up at random CVS stores where I’m guessing they may be trying to sell out what’s left, 3 shades including Catrina are available on CVS.com, and you can buy 4 shades on the website for Republic Cosmetics. The lipsticks and the nail polish are priced at $8 each on Republic Cosmetics website. Just about all of the nail polish shades are still available on the Republic Cosmetics website. There were a few duo sets with a lipstick and polish for $15, but they are sold out on the website.

Such a gorgeous red! I love Frida Kahlo, but I’m not sure how I feel about the Vans partnership. It feels a bit… wrong.
I agree, I didn’t get the collaboration with Vans. But it turns out Frida fans have been painting her face and parts of her paintings on their sneakers, so I guess Vans wanted to cash in.
