My Experiences with Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes

Never have a tried a brand and product that engendered such controversy and passion! In a Facebook group of makeup artists and enthusiasts that I belong to, there have been so many posts and photos about Younique 3D Fiber Lashes, some positive, others negative, all extremely passionate. It seems that everyone has an opinion on this brand and product.

Well, I didn’t have an opinion because I hadn’t tried them. I prefer to make up my own mind. I received an invitation from Kristen Youmans, one of the independent salespeople at Younique, asking if I was interested in trying out Younique’s 3D Fiber Lashes. I definitely wanted to try them. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about! Also, have you noticed that fiber lashes, once a rarity, are now being launched by lots of makeup brands including some of the biggest? I needed to try it.

I wondered what were the fibers made out of, since I am putting them near my eyes? I learned that they are natural, made from green tea fibers. Good, that sounds gentle.

A few weeks ago, I received beautiful case from Younique. It looks like a luxury pen set from Montblanc.

Not sure I need that much packaging, but this way I won’t lose the product and it does work toward creating a high-end image for the brand. In the black case were two tubes: one with gel: Moodstruck Transplanting Gel and one with the fibers: Moodstruck Natural Fibers.

The set also came with directions on how to apply. There is a particular way to apply the lashes:

  • Work on one eye at a time.
  • Apply one coat of your own mascara, a lengthening mascara rather than a volumizing mascara: I used L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara and it worked fine.
  • While the mascara is still wet, apply one coat of the Transplanting Gel.
  • Next apply the fibers, as many or as few as suits you.
  • Finally, apply another coat of the Transplanting Gel to seal in the fibers.

Because I read the directions quickly the first time I used the set, I didn’t apply the final coat of the Transplanting Gel and that was a mistake. As a result, I had a little bit of fiber fall out on one eye. “One trial learning” as we say in the psychology-biz: I didn’t make that mistake again.  😉

Prior to trying the product, I saw lots of photos posted on Facebook of women with spider lashes or lashes clumped together. Frankly, either that was a smear campaign or the women using the product that way wanted to look awful. 😈  If you apply Younique 3D Fiber Lashes with care and don’t rush through the process and don’t put on a ton of fibers at once, you’ll get good results: definitely longer lashes and lashes with more volume. I don’t like super-fat lashes, so I do not over-apply the fibers. If you want an even more dramatic look, you can apply more than I do. For fun, I tried going back and adding more gel and fibers after the first application, and my lashes got a little bit fatter and longer. And still no spider lashes or big clumpy lashes, thank goodness.

So what’s my verdict? I like Younique 3D Fibers. For me, they provide a little more oomph than say, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, that gives me the most amped up lashes in a traditional mascara. I’d say that the fiber lashes were almost as good as adding a pair of “natural” false lashes, though Younique is much easier for me to apply than falsies.  😛

Younique 3D Lashes is priced at $29. They say it’s for an 8 week supply, but I would say that would be if you are using it constantly. It’s going to last me much longer than that. I don’t need lashes quite this big to go grocery-shopping at Market Basket, lol.

If you are interested in learning more, check out Kristen’s website here. In the past, I have heard some people complain of pushy sales tactics from some Younique sales people. You will not find that kind of behavior when dealing with Kristen.  And if you try them, let me know what you think.

    1. Oh, wow, I’ll check out your review, too, Heather! I think they are much easier to apply than false eyelashes, and I can’t always depend on getting the darn falsies on correctly. I’m glad to have another option!

Wow, really a noticeable change! I like it a lot!!!

    1. It is, Sybille! Definitely more oomph than a couple of coats of regular mascara. Thanks for commenting <3

  6. An amazing difference! I can’t really do these fiber products or the two step mascara products as they always make my curled lashes straight 🙁

    1. I could see that. Because you’re adding to the length, it does straighten the lashes a bit.

  7. They look really pretty on you Allison! Not over the top at all! It’s nice to know that you can get a “natural” look from this set too!

    1. I was concerned about that, too, Phyrra. Luckily, the green tea fibers seem to be fine for my sensitive eyes and contact lenses. Luckily, no fallout once I realized I had to seal the fibers in!

  9. You got really great results. 😀

  10. A friend of mine just hosted a party for Younique and I received my 3d fiber lashes yesterday. They worked terrific! I can’t wait to do a blog post on my trial of them. I love how long they make your lashes look! You did a great job applying yours!

  11. Your lashes look beautiful! I’ve had this for months, but don’t use it very often, because I get the same results with mascara. If I could get the same results as you, this would be a necessity for me.
    jane-in-tx

    1. As I mentioned, Jane, I thought that the results are a little better than Too Faced Better Than Sex. That’s why I tried the second application, and that definitely added more length and volume to my lashes, and I think they still looked fine, not spidery. Thank you. I wish you were close enough to stop by, and we’d try it together!

  12. MarciaF says:

I bought it and had terrible luck with it. It dragged my lashes down. It smudged and fibers fell on my face. I used it several different ways and it never improved for me. The shipping adds another $9 to the cost too.

    1. Oh, no, Marcia! What a shame that it doesn’t work for you! It is pricey especially when you have to add in the shipping. I didn’t look into their return policy. I curled my lashes first, at the base, at the middle and at the tip so they were really curled before I applied anything. Then I applied one coat ozone of my favorite mascaras, then a light coating of the gel, and I don’t apply lots of fibers. I lightly dust my lashes with the fibers, and then another light coat of the gel. You may as well keep at it, and see if you can crack the code.

    1. Thanks, Jess!

  13. I think it’s too much work for the every day, and too much money for a “once in a while” mascaraa 😛
Miranda recently posted…Review & Swatches: Milani Constellation Gel EyelinersMy Profile

    1. As long as it doesn’t dry out, I have no problem with it being a “weekend only” mascara. I’ve had it for 2 months almost, and it’s fine. You’re right, I wouldn’t take the time to put it on to go to work in the morning, but I definitely find it easier than false lashes for weekend wear.

  14. The thing that turned me off to this brand is the constant barrage of emails from everyone selling them!

    1. I’d feel the same way, Cindy. The company must pressure the sales associates if that kind of behavior is so pervasive. The woman I worked with is just the opposite, lol. In fact, I haven’t heard from her in ages. I’m thinking she changed her email address!

  15. The results are pretty amazing. The price point is a little too high for me, though.
Sheila recently posted…Makeup Of The Day 30 With BFTE Area 51 & Sugarpill AbsintheMy Profile

    1. Yes, it is a bit steep especially if you add in the shipping costs. I looked up the price of DiorShow, my old fave, and it is $26. This brand is only $3 more, but the $9 shipping that another commenter mentioned puts it out of reach for so many of us.

  16. Lisa Heath says:

I genuinely like the few products I’ve tried from Younique. It’s the selling tactics I’ve experienced through a few of their reps that turn me off. After reviewing for 2 fabulous reps I had several get hostile with me in emails because I wasn’t interested in reviewing the same products again with a new rep.

    Their mascara is fabulous though

    1. I’m glad that you have had good experiences with the Younique products, Lisa. It really is a shame that some of the reps give the brand a bad reputation. The company management needs to get a handle on that and change it quickly!

  17. I’m glad you tried them for yourself-they seem to work brilliantly for you! They look extremely natural to me, love the look.

    1. Thanks so much, Nidia!

    1. The trick for me was not to over-apply either the gel or the fibers but to put on light coats of each. Curious to see how you make out if you try it again

  22. Your lashes look fantastic! I had a rep contact me awhile back and she was supposed to send, never did. I’m so sad she dropped off the face of the Earth because (regardless of the controversy) I’d love to try it!

  26. Christina Jones says:

If you’d prefer to work with someone a little closer to you, I can look up the most local presenter to you. This comes in handy if you want to avoid the shipping charges because you can get a large order together and get free shipping. (Over $100)

I’m really sorry your presenter flaked and I’m also sorry some of the other readers have had experiences with our more aggressive sellers. Believe me, it’s just as frustrating for us. I became a presenter because I loved the products and it’s disheartening to see people acting a fool causing people to be turned off.

  27. Debra Brownstein says:

I’ve been so close to trying this product but I haven’t followed through! The reviews seem so polarized; this method seems to leave a lot of fibers and quite frankly, it seems more steps than I want added to time spent on applying makeup! Thanks for your review; you are one of just a handful of bloggers I value the opinion of.

    1. Debra, I had good results using the Younique 3D mascara. However, since I tried it back in the summer, more and more mascaras have launched with built-in fiber. Frankly, I get as good a look with L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara for less than $10 or in the luxury category, with YSL Mascara Effets Faux Cils. I didn’t really love having to do the two steps, and with the new mascaras that have launched since this summer, I can get the fibers built into the formula!! Just my updated 2 cents 🙂
