My Five Favorite Facial Sunscreens for Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Although many of us wear sunscreen year round, it’s always good to have a reminder. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and though we’re all aware of skin cancer, the focus on it during the month of May provides us with an opportunity to check our sunscreen stashes and make sure we’re ready for more time spent outdoors.

I get to try out a lot of facial sunscreen products fairly frequently. There’s a good chance that I did another favorite sunscreen post in the past. But since I am often trying new products, I thought I’d do another.

Here are my 5 current faves:

Zenmed, Coola, Paula's Choice, and CoTZ facial sunscreens

  • Coola 70%+ organic Sunsilk Drops SPF 30 (reviewed here): I absolutely love this lightweight lotion chemical sunscreen. It was one of my two favorite facial sunscreens last summer, and one of my favorite skincare products of 2019. The milky lotion is dosed by a dropper, and one dropper is usually enough for my whole face.  After cleansing my face, I apply this sunscreen and then I follow it with moisturizer. Frankly, I hardly know that I’m wearing it because it disappears. Also, it’s fragrance-free. I bought this 1 fluid ounce bottle last spring, and I am almost out of it. I am definitely planning to reorder it.

  • Coola Face Mineral Sunscreen Cucumber Matte Finish SPF 30 (reviewed here): This is by far my favorite mineral sunscreen. And it is one of the weirdest sunscreens ever, in a good way. 😉 It comes out of the tube a fluffy and slightly oily looking white cream. At first, I thought, this is going to be one greasy sunscreen. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I apply this sunscreen on top of my moisturizer since it’s a physical sunscreen that reflects the sun’s rays, and it absorbs completely and disappears, leaving my face so smooth, it’s like a primer! It has absolutely no white cast whatsoever. The Cucumber version that I have has a very faint cucumber scent that fades instantly. There is an unscented version, too. I love this lightweight mineral sunscreen so much I have another tube waiting in the wings.

  • Zenmed Oil-free Moisturizer SPF 30 (reviewed here): Zenmed is a Canadian brand of skincare products for “sensitive and troubled skin”. I don’t have either, but that hasn’t stopped me from loving this brand of high quality skincare. Although this oil-free moisturizer was designed for those with oily skin or acne, I find that it works well for me too. It is a mid-weight moisturizer with chemical sunscreen. I apply this after cleansing my face, and even though it’s oil-free, it feels very hydrating. It leaves my skin with a velvety feeling but it dries matte. The matte finish makes it perfect to wear under foundation.  Fragrance-free.

  • CoTZ The Healthier Sunscreen Lightly Tinted Face Moisture SPF 35 (reviewed here): This is a tinted mineral sunscreen moisturizer that I wear on its own, no moisturizer or foundation needed. The light tint provides a bit of coverage, but importantly the tint camouflages any white cast that the zinc oxide sunscreen might have on its own. This is my favorite beach sunscreen, moisturizer and “makeup” in one. Fragrance-free.

  • Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 (reviewed here): I reach for Paula’s Choice Daily Hydrating Fluid so often because: 1. It is SPF 50 so it’s perfect for when I am going to be outdoors for a long time, and 2. It is a super lightweight lotion that disappears into my skin. It was one of my two favorite facial sunscreens and one of my favorite skincare products for 2019. Paula’s Choice Daily Hydrating Fluid SOF 50 is a chemical sunscreen, so I apply it after cleansing. After I apply it, I sometimes follow up with a lightweight moisturizer since the Hydrating Fluid doesn’t have quite enough moisture for my very dry skin especially during the colder weather. In warm weather, I can often use it as a sunscreen and moisturizer in one. It is terrific to wear under makeup because it completely disappears. Fragrance-free. My tube is almost empty. You can be sure I will be reordering this one! It comes in travel and full sizes.

Since all sunscreens need to be reapplied after about an hour and a half, I try to wear a hat, when possible. And I like Colorescience Brush On Sunscreen SPF 50 (reviewed here) or Brush On Block Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (reviewed here) especially when it’s hot.

All of these facial sunscreen options are cruelty-free and natural, many with organic ingredients.
