My Intro to Kjaer Weis Luxury Organic Makeup

Not long ago, I signed up for an event at a beautiful new-to-me medispa, Interlocks, in the charming seaside town, Newburyport MA. I noticed the invitation on Facebook for a makeup brand that I was eager to get to see in person, Kjaer Weis. One of my blogger friends, LolaSeicento of Lola’s Secret Beauty Blog, reviewed some enticing Kjaer Weis lipstick shades this summer, and they looked and sounded very appealing. I wanted to check them out for myself.

First, a word about the Interlocks Medispa, spa and salon.

What an elegant, clean, inviting place! Their medispa is on one side of the space offering laser, electrolysis, waxing, massage, injectables, and lashes. On the other side is the  hair and nail salon. In between, there is a retail space where they sell hair and makeup products from upscale brands like NARS, Oribe etc. It’s the kind of place I’d expect to find in LA or other big city.

I easily found my way to the Kjaer Weis event. With this gorgeous rose centerpiece, I couldn’t miss it!

There was an enticing cheese, crackers and fruit table outside the meeting room where the event was held.

Inside the room, there was a wine station where I picked up a glass of Prosecco. Hors d’oeuvres were served. There was a big crowd of women of all ages. Frankly, before I went, I was a bit concerned that I’d be the oldest person there. I was pleased to find lots of women in my age range in attendance. In fact, I met a couple of nice women who were clients of the salon who dropped into the event after their appointments.

In the middle of the room was a display with the Kjaer Weis makeup testers. Kirsten, a well-known makeup artist and the Danish founder of Kjaer Weis,

and her assistant from New York where they’re based were both busy doing makeup applications on attendees, as were several of the senior makeup artists from the salon.

I was hoping to get a chance to chat with Kirsten or maybe get a mini-makeover from her, but she was taking such care with the women she was working with, I had to give up. Instead, one of the very nice MUAs from the salon told me about the product line and applied a few of the products on me.

Kjaer Weis is a certified organic, cruelty-free brand. What attracted me most to Kjaer Weis was the fact that many of the products are creams: foundation, blush, highlighter, and lipsticks. Perfect for dry, mature skin like mine. Although their eyeshadows now are powders, cream shadows are in the works.

Another interesting thing about Kjaer Weis is that instead of traditional primer, there is an oil that is used to hydrate and prepare the skin for foundation. Because I was wearing some makeup already that evening, I just tried the luxurious golden oil called The Beautiful Oil ($225) on my hand. It seemed very nice.

The cream foundations come in 14 shades primarily for women with light to medium skin tones with a couple of fairly dark skin tone shades.

In the meeting room with bright artificial light, it was difficult for me to get color-matched for foundation. In fact, two different salon MUAs suggested three different foundation shades for me. Because I have a bit of a tan despite wearing sunscreen all the time, I decided it didn’t make sense to buy a pricey new foundation ($68) till my skin tone went back to the shade that it normally is during 9 months of the year. Nevertheless, the MUA chose a shade that she thought was a good match (I thought it was too yellow for my pink cool-toned skin). The cream foundation is formulated with jojoba, coconut and sweet almond oils, but because it doesn’t contain any synthetic ingredients like dimethicone, it must be applied to well moisturized skin. Because it does not contain any preservatives, it has a shelf life of one year once opened. The foundation is buildable and can be applied with fingers, brush or blending sponge. Kjaer Weis sells brushes to apply their makeup. Concealer in’t necessary because the cream foundation acts as a concealer too. The foundation felt very silky and lightweight on my skin. I loved how it felt. Nevertheless, I’m not totally convinced that I wouldn’t want to use primer rather than The Beautiful Oil as a first step.

The MUA then applied cream blush ($56) that I liked a lot. There are 11 shades.

I was given a very generous sample of blush, shade Blossoming – a peachy pink, in their red faux/vegan leather case. The sample could easily be placed into a magnetic palette.

Next, the MUA applied a light wash of powder eyeshadow ($45) in a pale violet shade to my lids. I am very interested in the cream shadow that will be launching soon, but I must say the KW powder shadow formulated with bamboo instead of silicones was the silkiest eyeshadow I’ve ever tried. Eye pencils are also available in a variety of shades.

There were 8 shades of lipstick ($56), mostly neutrals – both light and dark), a deep wine and a couple of reds. I think these were their fall shades.

They also have cream clear lip balm and 12 shades of tinted lip balm ($49) as well as 6 shades of lip gloss ($38). I was given a sample of Cherish, lip gloss, a pale shell pink that I noticed is the same color as the Milani pink beige nail polish I’m wearing.

There are lip pencils as well.

Kjaer Weis is definitely luxury makeup, and it is priced as such. The shades are classic colors, but packaging is stunningly modern and chic, befitting a luxury makeup brand. Each piece comes in a heavy silver toned metal case with the KW initials in stylized white relief.

In addition, Kjaer Weis sells red faux/vegan leather palettes ($76) to carry your KW makeup in one spot with a large usable mirror. It has 6 magnetic slots for foundation, blush, highlighter, tinted lip balm, and two eyeshadows.

In addition, Kjaer Weis makeup can be purchased in eco-conscious refills that are less expensive and can be popped into a palette or the silver packaging.

Kjaer Weis is cruelty-free, gluten-free, natural, made with a high percentage of organic ingredients, and a number of the shades are vegan.

While Kjaer Weis is out of my price range to buy all at once or on a regular basis, I was impressed with the products I tried. I will go back to Interlocks in the fall when my skin is its normal, non-summer shade, and see if I can find a good shade match for foundation as well as to test out the cream shadows that hopefully will be available then.

I had a fun evening at Interlocks Medispa. Here I am in the photo area against a beautiful wall of flowers. Too bad I’m a little out of focus. Oh well.

Interlocks sent me home with a shiny, silver Interlocks makeup bag to hold my Kjaer Weis samples as well as two Oribe hair and body products, Flash Form Spray Wax that I’ll give to my friend Sue and the Head to Toe Kit containing tubes of body wash and body creme.

Thank you, Interlocks, for the goodies and an enjoyable and informative time!

In addition to purchasing Kjaer Weis at Interlocks Medispa in Newburyport MA, it is also sold on the Kjaer Weis website, at Barney’s, Net-A-Porter, and Revolve.

Very nice review on what looks like a really nice make-up brand. Thanks for sharing. 🙋🏻❤️💐

    1. Thank you, DiEtta xoxo Kjaer Weis is a lovely makeup brand. In order to try the foundation or one of the new cream shadows when they launch, I may have to forgo the beautiful silver packaging and just buy a much more affordable refill. LMK if you ever see this brand on QVC or HSN!

  2. Thank you so much for the shout-out, Allison! I am so happy that you went to this event! Oh, how I wish that I had attended this event with you– we would have had a blast together! I love her lipsticks and eyeshadows, and definitely want to try her cream blushes and foundations. Other than her lipsticks, I buy the refills.

    1. I think skipping the gorgeous silver contacts and just buying the refills will be the way to go for me too, boo hoo. I’m excited for the cream shadows. I hope they launch soon. And I really wish we had been able to go to the KW launch party together. I would have loved that!

  3. This is a makeup brand that I’ve wanted to try for the longest time. It looks so chic and the brand sounds very interesting to me. Glad that you got to experience it!!! Also, that rose display was so beautiful!

    1. The rose display was so eye-catching, Christine! It was so appropriate for this lovely event. The makeup was so silky and lovely. I wish I could afford at least one of the beautiful silver compacts, but I’ll probably save money and buy one of the refills one of these days!

  4. Sandy Pincombe says:

You look fantastic! Glad you had fun. Thiis product line looks great but too pricey for me.

    1. Thank you so much, Sandy! KW is too pricey for me too, but I think I will try something – either the foundation if I can figure out the right shade or one of the new cream shadows. In order to save money, I will probably forgo the gorgeous silver packaging and just buy a much more affordable refill 😉

  5. This is definitely a luxury line! I love that they have so many different colors and styles to try – a little something for everyone!

  6. It’s nice to have a makeup area for that medispa. Are they staffed with MD and RN? just curious. You look lovely in your orange cardigan!

    1. Thank you, Kathryne! Because I was there to cover the Kjaer Weis event, I didn’t get to really investigate the medispa on the other side of the building other than getting a list of the services offered. I will have to see if they list the personnel and their credentials on their website.

  7. I love my Kjaer Weiss blush in Blossoming and am dying for another shade. I had it in my cart at Beautylish but didn’t buy one yet. I will though. I’d adore seeing the line in person.

    1. Oh wow, that’s great that you have the same KW blush shade. Did you have it in the beautiful silver compact? The blush shades were lovely. I think the MUA put a peachy one on me, but I think I’d like a pinky-plum shade for fall if they have one. But I am really waiting for the cream shadows. I couldn’t believe how silky smooth both the foundation and the powder shadow were – heavenly! I may have to pick up a refill and forgo the pretty silver compact to get to try more. Thank you for letting me know it’s at Beautylish too!

  8. Jen Walker says:

I know some people aren’t “wowed” by classic shades, but they are classics for a reason- they never go out of style! What a fun event!

    1. The Kjaer Weis launch party really was fun. And I agree with you on classic shades – they’re what I buy.

  9. Great detailed review! I appreciate the fact they are cruelty free and vegan, but im most intrigued by everything being offered in a cream!

    1. For those of us with dry skin, cream makeup is the way to go!

  10. I read wine station and was like “OOOOH, YES!” 🙂 LOL I struggle so much with cream products….this last weekend I had an epic fail with cream shadow, luckily my sister gave me some pointers. I do like that they are cruelty free!

    1. Cream makeup isn’t for everyone! For those of us with dry skin, they’re the way to go, but if you have combination or oily skin, I’d stick with powders 🙂

  11. How fun!! I’ve never heard of this brand. I like the look of that lipstick!

  12. I’ve always loved the look of the KW packaging, but have yet to try anything. The minis are too cute!

  13. I really like the sound of all these cream products! The brand looks like it’s geared towards a more mature audience and I think we need more of that. Millenials are not the only ones who love beauty!

  14. This looks like a really fun event! The products all look beautiful. I’d be interested in the oil primer under foundation. Sounds like a nice solution to me.

    1. I think the oil as primer does make sense. Many MUAs believe that well hydrated skin is the true first step before foundation. KW is a lovely brand. I would love to try some more products one of these days
