Hydrating my lips is a year round thing for me. My dry lips feel much better during the summer than during the winter, not surprisingly, but I work at keeping them moisturized everyday.
Everyone’s skin and lips are different, and you have to know what works for you. At night, I use medical grade lanolin, something that vegans will avoid. I also use another heavy duty balm that contains some petrolatum, an ingredient that some people also avoid. Nevertheless, both of those ingredients do the most to keep my lips moisturized and healed. So I do what works for me.
However, during the day, I use other types of lip balms, primarily ones that are easy to apply on the go. I’ve got a new lip balm in my purse makeup bag these days.
EpiCeram-L Lip Care
Recently, I was asked to try EpiCeram-L, a lip balm from a pharmaceutical company that makes dermatological products including products for burn patients and consumer-oriented anti-acne products. In fact, their website has two different portals, one for consumers and one for physicians. I was definitely interested in giving their lip balm a go.
EpiCeram-L is a cool-looking balm. It comes in a flattened oval shaped tube. That unusual shape is so perfect for applying to my lips! I slide it horizontally along my lips, and that’s it, done. The shape also makes it a good fit to carry in a pocket.
The bullet of balm looks like a typical lip balm, but on my lips, it is not waxy like many tube lip balms. Instead, it turns to a lightweight “oil” on my lips that stays put and isn’t greasy. A surprising sensation, but I like it!
What Makes It Different
Unlike other lip balms, EpiCeram-L is a therapeutic lip balm that contains three lipids (fats): ceramides, essential fatty acids and cholesterol. It also is formulated with aloe. The website describes the formula as natural, and it does NOT have parabens, steroids, gluten, fragrance, petrolatum, or lanolin. It’s made for even the most sensitive lips. Also, because you wear lip balm on your lips, it’s great to use a balm that doesn’t have ingredients that you would be concerned about if you ended up ingesting it.
The balm uses a time-released technology, professionally called “MultiSal Technology” that they advertise as “Intelli-Target Technology”. Basically, the microencapsulated lipids/fats are released over time so your lips stay hydrated.
EpiCeram-L’s tagline is “Real Medicine for Chapped Lips”, appropriate for a pharmaceutical-developed product. I noticed that some of the reviewers online stated that their dermatologists recommended the product.
I’ve had good results with EpiCeram-L Lip Care, though we’re still experiencing warm weather and my lips are in decent shape. I’ll be curious to see how it does during the winter, but I’m optimistic.
I’ve mentioned over and over again that I have a difficult time wearing liquid matte lipsticks. I like wearing EpiCeram-L under liquid matte lippies because it’s so lightweight. As a result, I can wear my matte lippies longer and more comfortably.

EpiCeram-L Lip Care can be purchased on the EpiCeram website in a three pack for $39.95. It’s pricier than your typical drugstore lip balm, but on par with higher end brands. In fact, I paid $25 for a small bottle of Clarins Lip Oil last year. Nevertheless, I hope they decide to sell it individually some day and sell it in stores. I wonder if it’s vegetarian? I do love lip care. I always use balms and chap sticks.
I have been searching for the ingredient list, but I think it’s on the physician side of the website that I can’t get in to. It doesn’t have lanolin so there’s a good chance it’s vegetarian and maybe even vegan 🙂
EpiCeram-L has Cera Alba (bee’s wax) which some may consider an animal byproduct. Otherwise EpiCeram-L contains MultiSal Neolipids, a proprietary microencapsulation system allowing gradual delivery of key ingredients over time including Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide Mea (Ceramide), Cholesterol, CLA and Palmitic Acid, as well as Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Ozokerite, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E),and Propyl Gallate. I’m curious about this; being sick in the last week my lips got horribly chapped, I know I’ve been a bit dry, and I don’t have a quality lip balm I can lean on. I have Carmex and something that’s more Glossy from a small business but my lips need to try this!

I like the EpiCeram-L especially for under liquid matte lippies because it’s the right consistency. But if you don’t like that feeling, you may like several others I’ve reviewed that feel more like a coating: Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm, Hanalei or MyChelle Lip Hints 🙂
I really dislike waxy lip balms and it’s nice to know this one is not. Also, I am a lip balm addict and always have at least 2 in my purse no matter the season! 🙂

EpiCeram-L has quite a different feeling on my lips from others that I’m tried. It’s sort of a lighter weight version of Clarins Lip Oil though this looks as if it would be waxy since it’s a bullet, but it magically transforms. Interesting balm for sure!
This lip balm is the best!!!!! I love it! Now it is discontinued. Is there another product that has the same ingredient list that is available for purchase? I have been trying tons of brands and am having no luck with a winner like this.
Keena, unfortunately it does appear to be discontinued, but I would check with a dermatologist if you have one. Wildsmith Ceramide Lipid Repair Balm from the UK has the 3 key ingredients in it: ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. I haven’t been able to find another brand with those skin barrier strengthening ingredients. I have good luck with Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm. Hope this helps
