I’m a day late and a dollar short. When I wrote this yesterday – Thursday – it was National Handbag Day. So I thought I’d share my handbag bargain for Fall that I scored at Macy’s last week.
When I was in the store the week before, I strolled through the bag department, and my eye fell upon a wine colored medium size dome satchel from brand, Gianni Bernini. The bag style and colors were created as Macy’s exclusives, though the dome satchel style is a classic. To be honest, it was the wine color – called Dark Orchid – that was what attracted me. My winter parka is purple, and I thought this bag would be a good alternative to black. (Today was so dark and cloudy that the shade looks brown, but it is a deep purple wine shade in reality.)
Also, I wanted a bag that was not too heavy but was a little bigger than the small bag I had carried all summer. Although I liked the lightness of my small pink Kate Spade summer bag (reviewed here), I’m a little weary of trying to jam everything in it.
The Gianni Bernini Medium Dome Satchel is made of Saffiano, a lightweight washable waxed cowhide material that’s machine embossed with the typical Saffiano cross-hatched design. My summer bag from Kate Spade was also made from Saffiano. I hadn’t heard of that material before I bought my summer satchel, so I looked it up online where it is described as a form of leather. But now I’m confused because the Macy’s website describes my new bag as fabricated from Saffiano, and then it calls it faux leather. So I don’t know if it’s faux or a form of real leather, but I like the bag either way.
The satchel has two 6″ caramel-colored handles (and trim) and an adjustable shoulder strap. The hardware is silver, which I prefer to gold.
The bag has two zippers that run along the dome and go almost to the bottom of the satchel. That allows me to really open up the bag, and you can see how spacious it is. It also makes it easy to find things inside the bag.
Also inside, there are two large compartments with a zippered sleeve in the middle, a smaller zippered compartment as well as an open pocket that’s perfect for my iPhone Plus, there’s a handy key finder. I finally can fit my fat wallet, my makeup bag, my glasses case, my sunglasses case, keys, pens, Kleenex etc. without having to squish everything in. I love it. They say that it also fits a tablet.
On the outside is another zippered pocket. Frankly, I haven’t figured out yet what to put in all these pockets!
The dimensions of the medium dome satchel are 12-1/2″W x 9-1/4″H x 5″Du (width is measured across bottom of handbag). It’s one of the largest purses I own, but fortunately, at 2 pounds it’s not the heaviest.
The regular price for the Gianni Bernini Medium Dome Satchel was $99.50, and with all the Macy’s discounts I got using my Macy’s credit card, I paid $47.76 which I think is the right price. It also comes in another attractive shade, Mauve (dusty rose), that would be lovely for spring.

Macy’s can be amazing with their sales and you really scored. I’m trying to get out of my black purse rut and this would be an excellent color. Great buy.
