Never Say Never: Half Caked Totally Tubular Mascara, The Heights

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

Was it just last week that I reviewed my March Ipsy Plus bag? I think it was. And I remember writing that maybe I was going to give away the tube of Half Caked Totally Tubular Mascara that was one of the products chosen for me by Ipsy. In fact, I put the mascara in one of the boxes of giveaway winnings that I have to mail out this week.

I typically hate tubular mascara. It grosses me out when I remove it to see those weird looking little tubes. Ugh. I mean I really, really hate it.

Also, the packaging for Half Caked Totally Tubular Mascara, The Heights looks like it was designed for a 12 year old, with the punny name, tagline “Babe Tested” and the lavender plastic tube.

But something made me fish it out of the giveaway box. I decided that if I am subscribing to Ipsy in order to try new things, I should try new things. I decided to use it, and I’m glad I did.

What really got me to try it was the wand. The long, slim wand with the tapered tip has the shape and the plastic teeth that I love. I figured if I didn’t like the mascara, I could toss it and save the wand.

But turns out, I really like the formula. It’s an easy to apply lengthening formula if you apply one coat. After all, it’s called The Heights. And if you go for a second coat, it’s volumizing as well. It doesn’t make my lashes stick together, and if I put on too much, I can use the plastic teeth to just lengthen it out more. Over time, it doesn’t flake or smudge. I’ll spare you the weird closeups of my eyes, but take my word for it, it’s a good one.

Totally Tubular Mascara comes off with plain water, though I use micellar water to remove it. Surprisingly, the mascara mostly melts off like regular mascara rather than coming off as little tubes. Although there are sometimes a couple of tubes, nothing like other tube mascara I have used. Whew.

Half Caked Totally Tubular Mascara is vegan and cruelty-free. It’s made in Florida so maybe that explains the surfer lingo. It’s priced at $12 for 8.5 ml, and it’s sold on the Half Caked website and on Amazon (though it’s currently out of stock). Honestly, it was an excellent discovery! I’m glad I pushed myself to try it.

I’m so glad this was a surprise hit! I’m crossing my fingers for Ipsy Choice Day on Friday. Also, I took your advice and emailed customer service.

    1. Gabrielle, what is Ipsy Choice Day? I totally missed that one! I hope customer service gets back to you. Speaking of customer service, I tweeted Scentbird yesterday to let them know that the last 2 or 3 of the fragrance sample vials I’ve received are very hard to spray. They did get right back to me, but they want me to make a video to send them demonstrating the problem. Geez, who can be bothered with that?

Ipsy Choice Day is the day you get to make your choices for the next bag. I’m hoping I do better this month, though I will admit that I adore the Kosas Tinted Face Oil. It’s the perfect light foundation. It feels like nothing on, but it does even out my skintone. Scentbird is being ridiculous! I am so sorry they are making you jump through hoops!

        1. I must be still asleep! I never thought of choosing my Ipsy products as Choice Day, but of course it is! I’m so glad that the Kosas Tinted Face Oil has turned in to a real favorite. I have to look that up. City Beauty is sending me some kind of oil to try. I’m wondering if it will turn out to be similar? I think I’ll skip making the video for Scentbird. Too much trouble to have to find my tripod and set it up just to get a new cheap atomizer.

Let me know if the City Beauty Oil is any good. I am so sorry about Scentbird. It’s ridiculous that they expect you to jump through hoops!

    1. It’s a much better mascara than it looks!!

  3. I remember the first time I used a tubing mascara and was totally freaked out when I removed it. I had no clue that’s what it would do. I don’t mind them now but sometimes I feel like I miss some of the legs. I’m glad you got more value from your subscription.
