New Makeup in the Drugstore from KISS: RK Ruby Kisses

When I was waiting for a prescription at CVS a couple of weeks ago, I killed time by doing a once around the store. I ran into a new display sticking out into one of the aisles in the crowded little CVS near me. The display was for RK from KISS, the company best known for faux nails! Years ago, I moderated some focus groups for KISS, but the director of marketing moved on to another company and that was the end for me. So I haven’t been actively following what they’re up to.

Under the name RK or Ruby Kisses, KISS has launched a complete line of very affordable makeup, and it’s all there at CVS. It looks like it’s also sold at Walmart. I went to the RK website that has lots of info on the product line, and when I clicked “shop online”, it started to take me to walmart.com but their server wasn’t working (too busy with Christmas shopping??).

RK sells products for face, eyes, lips, and nails as well as makeup brushes. I had a couple of Extrabucks from CVS, so I chose a lipstick, of course.

The Cream.li.cious Triple Butter Matte Lip Cream in the shade, Berry In Love, one of 11 varied shades. I usually can’t wear liquid matte lipsticks but I was intrigued by the “Triple Butter…Cream” aspect of the lipstick – it has mango butter, shea butter, coconut butter in the formula. It sounded soothing and hydrating.

Cream.li.cious Lip Cream comes in a small round tube with a heart-shaped but doe-foot on one side sponge applicator. The applicator and formula make it easy to apply.

It’s thick but easily spreadable, and it spreads quite evenly. If you have older lips like me, I recommend using a lipliner first because I, sometimes but not always, get a bit of feathering. Unfortunately, Cream.li.cious smells a bit like chemicals going on but thankfully, the chemical scent goes away immediately. It feels very, very creamy, more like a gloss than a liquid matte when first applied. Also, it is extremely lightweight though it covers completely.

Berry In Love is not a mauve like I thought, but a relatively bright cool-toned raspberry shade. Instead of being disappointed that it wasn’t mauve as I expected, I was pleased that it was a shade that I don’t usually wear, that’s a little out of my comfort zone.

Cream.li.cious Triple Butter Matte Lip Cream loses its glossiness in a few minutes, but it doesn’t dry down to uncomfortable nothingness, thank goodness. It’s comfortable for me to wear for several hours. The color stays on for several hours as well. After eating a meal, I checked to see what remained, and though it didn’t look as good as before the meal, you could tell that I was still wearing lipstick.

The first time I wore RK Cream.li.cious, I applied it around 2pm, ate dinner around 7pm, and it still showed up on my lips around 10pm. Because I have such desperately dry lips, my lips were very dried out by about 9pm. I don’t fault the lipstick for that. I just have the kind of super-dry lips that can’t wear a liquid matte for hours and hours. So now, I wear Cream.li.cious for a few hours and then I put lip balm on over it.

The ingredient list on the tube is in mouse type, so I have no idea what’s in it. The ingredients aren’t listed on the website.

I paid about $2, I think, for RK by Kiss Cream.li.cious Triple Butter Matte Lip Cream (6 ml/0.20 fl. oz.) at CVS, and it was well worth the super-affordable price. I will definitely try some more RK makeup next time I have some extra cash when I’m at CVS or Walmart.

Have you seen the RK by Kiss makeup yet? Have you tried anything from the line?

  1. This is so pretty! It wasn’t that long ago that I wouldn’t have imagined you actually purchasing a matte lip anything given your past bad luck in having them dry out your lips. Since I have generally had the same relationship with matte lipsticks, I may pass since your lips were dried out by 9pm. When that happens to me I generally wake up with chapped lips the next day.

    1. I have the same problem, Helen. If I wear a liquid matte for too long (7 hours was too long for me), I have dried out lips at the end of the day and the next day. I have to wear liquid mattes including this one with lip balm underneath and then put on more balm as the day goes on even though it ruins the matte effect.

  6. For $2 it’s a find. I think the color is pretty on you and it’s nice that it doesn’t completely dry your lips out from the start.

    1. Can’t go wrong at that price. I have to come to the realization that I must wear lip balm under liquid mattes lipsticks, and wear them only for a few hours at a time. Boo hoo.
