New Shades from MAC Paint Pots Cream Eyeshadows

I know I am finally getting bored being at home because I have been playing with makeup more often even though I have nowhere to go. How about you? Do you ever put on makeup these days?

Recently, I noticed that MAC introduced several new shades of their iconic Pro Longwear Paint Pot Eyeshadow, cream or base shadows, that come in the cute little glass black-lidded jars.

They are sold at MAC stores, on the MAC website and on Ulta.com. At the time I placed my order, Ulta was sold out of most of the new shades, but today when I checked, most were back in stock.

I use the MAC Paint Pot in the shade Painterly (pink beige that MAC calls nude beige) fairly often to cover my red eyelids discolored from blepharitis. Sometimes, I use Painterly as a base underneath powder shadows, and other times, I use it as a cream shadow on its own. Over the years, I bought a couple of other shades that I use every now and then especially Layin’ Low that MAC describes as “creamy beige” that I would describe as warm golden squash blossom.

Some of the new shades that MAC introduced seemed different, a switch from neutrals. They really appealed to me, so I ended up ordering three:

I’ve been playing with them today. They can be applied either with a finger or a brush. Here are the swatches over bare skin:

I am most impressed with Clearwater. It goes on easily and is completely opaque. Moss Definitely is another winner. The opaque forest green color is rich and beautiful. The gold flecks are very subtle, and I didn’t even notice them at first. They come alive in the light.

On the other hand, Silver Screen was a disappointment, as you can see in the swatch above. I have a number of excellent silver powder shadows, but I always wanted a silver cream shadow. This one was billed as Bright Silver, so it sounded promising. Instead, it let me down. It has an oily feeling in the pot, and it goes on almost completely sheer. Frankly, it is more of a topper than a true shadow. If I were going into stores, I would return Silver Screen, but I don’t feel like going through the trouble and expense of mailing it back. Boo.

When I was a kid in the early 60s, my favorite (and most affordable) Halloween costume was a beatnik. I would put on black tights, one of my father’s white shirts, put my long hair in a pony tail, and apply my mother’s turquoise eyeshadow. I thought I was all that, lol. Today, playing with Clearwater, I felt like I was channeling my inner beatnik.

This time, I applied Urban Decay Anti-aging Primer Potion on my lid and crease. Then I used my fingertip to pat Clearwater over my entire lid. Next, I used Moss Definitely in the V. I also tried applying Moss Definitely in my crease first with my finger and then with a brush. In the V, the deep green helped give my eyes some dimensionality. I applied Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner Pencil in the money green metallic shade, Mildew, along my upper and lower lashlines. I even tried for a little wing to enhance my beatnik look. Clearwater showed up the most, and it is a different look for me, especially since I seldom wear a lot of noticeable makeup these days at home.

Next, I tried adding some Silver Screen on top of Clearwater in the middle of my lids. It did give the shadow a little bit of a glow, but frankly, still rather disappointing.

MAC Paint Pots are easy to apply and blend because they don’t dry down immediately. You have enough time to do whatever blending you need to. Once they do dry, however, they stay in place, don’t crease, and certainly over primer, they don’t fade.

I don’t know how often I will wear these shades, but they’re fun for a change.

At this point, MAC has 23 shades in their Pro Longwear Paint Pot collection, 22 of which are at Ulta. At Ulta, two shades are still sold out, Currant Affair (intense reddish-purple) and Ultraviolet (electric purple shimmer). Ulta does not carry Clearwater, so you’d have to check MAC for that one. They are priced at $23 each, but I must have bought them on sale since I don’t think I would buy three of them at full price. Oh, now I remember! MAC was offering two free full size lipsticks (that I will review another time), a gorgeous full size Extra Dimension Skinfinish Poudre Lumiere that I will probably give away since I don’t wear powder, and the cute MAC purse mirror that’s in a couple of the photos above. I was a good deal.

Are you a fan of MAC Paint Pots? Do you think you will buy any of the new shades?

  1. Clearwater and Silver Screen are stunning on you, Allison! I have a bunch of Paint Pots, but I haven’t used them in ages. I am going to dig them up and play with them again! I am not wearing much makeup these days, but I used to love to use these!

    1. Paint Pots are so much fun. Honestly, I have been putting on some makeup lately just because I need a change!

  2. When I freelanced for MAC I had a discount and I went crazy buying everything they made. I used up several Painterly paint pots. I did buy Silver Screen a few years ago and found it too glittery for me. They discontinued a few nice shades which is too bad. I wonder if they even show people these at the counters.

    1. Gee, Silver Screen was such a disappointment for me, Marcia. It doesn’t even sound like the same shade you tried a few years ago that was too glittery. This was a big nothing. Sheer with a little shimmer. MAC has changed up some of the shades, I’ve noticed too, over the years. I was glad to see that they’ve added some new ones like Moss Definitely, Ultraviolet and the intense red-purple shade. Still, Painterly is also my most-used shade. Your question about showing people these at the counter, I have no idea. I haven’t been in a store in a year. Thank goodness for curbside pickup! I feel so bad for salespeople, since so many must have been laid off.

Those colors look absolutely amazing on you! Wow!

    1. Thank you, Gabrielle! It was fun to try some shades that are out of my usual comfort zone for a change!
