New Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

Over the past few months, I saw a lot of ads for new Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++. As a serious fan of The Liquid Silk Canvas (Primer) as well as The Dewy Skin Cream, I thought I would probably love The Silk Sunscreen. It sounded light as a feather, plus it is a mineral sunscreen with SPF 50. Perfection, right?

When Tatcha had its 25% off Friends & Family Sale a couple of weeks ago, I decided to try The Silk Sunscreen, and I bought a new bottle of The Liquid Silk Canvas just in time for my current bottle to run out. I also got three samples that I haven’t tried yet.

The Silk Sunscreen

In my mind, I pictured The Silk Sunscreen as a light, whipped mousse in a jar. I imagined it sinking into my skin and leaving nothing behind.

Boy, was I surprised when The Silk Sunscreen arrived last week.

First, the packaging was completely different from what I expected. In fact, it is quite innovative. The Silk Sunscreen comes in a flat bottle, I guess you’d call it. You unscrew the silver top and it reveals pour-top. When I unscrewed it the first time, tinted liquid spurted out of the top. I guess it is that shape so that as you get to the end, you turn it upside-down and squeeze.

Second, I was not expecting a liquid. The Liquid Silk Canvas primer is not a liquid but a gel-cream. The Silk Sunscreen is not a whipped mousse like I thought it would be, but instead a liquidy lotion.

Like just about all sunscreens, it has a somewhat greasy feel initially that does go away, and it leaves my skin with a shiny look that I don’t like that also disappears eventually.

Not surprisingly, the mineral-based, zinc oxide Silk Sunscreen is tinted so that it doesn’t give a white cast to the skin.

The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 Ingredients

Another thing I didn’t realize is that Tatcha positions The Silk Sunscreen as facial skincare as well as sunscreen.

In addition to the zinc oxide sunscreen, it contains niacinamide to reduce pores, firm skin, reduce redness and even skintone, and hyaluronic acid to increase skin’s hydration. The Silk Extract contains amino acids for glow and additional hydration. However, The Silk Sunscreen is to be applied after moisturizer.

It does make my skin feel smooth because it has dimethicone.

Tatcha is cruelty-free and dermatologist-tested. It’s formulated without mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates.

My Thoughts vs. Other Peoples’ Thoughts

To be honest, I’m not a fan of The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++. Could you tell? Thank goodness, I bought it on sale because it certainly isn’t inexpensive. In fact, it’s even more expensive than I thought it was: $60 for 50 ml/1.7 fl. oz. Since I bought it, I will definitely use it up, and at 1.7 oz., it won’t last that long.

However, I looked at the reviews on the Tatcha website, and 569 reviewers gave it an average of 4.5 stars out of 5. Everyone loves that:

  • it’s “not greasy”
  • it “disappears on my skin”
  • the tint masks the zinc oxide and disappears into the skin
  • it has SPF 50.

The key complaint was the high price. A couple of women found the bottle messy to use, and at first, I agreed, but I realized you have to keep the bottle upright most of the time and squeeze out just a little.

So, like the Tatcha consumers on the Tatcha website, you too may like The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50. In fact, it’s out of stock on the Tatcha website now. It is also sold at Sephora, Kohl’s and QVC. If they come out with a travel size, I think you should try that first. Right now, they are giving out a mini Silk Sunscreen with purchases of $125+.

  1. What a bummer that you didnt like it –especially at that price. That’s similar to colorescience pricing but I’m happy with their finishes. I would be interested in trying more from tacha though. Id love to see how that primer feels

    1. Tatcha is an interesting brand, Claudia. They have 2 major collections: one for dry and mature skin (for me!) and a water-based collection for those with oily or combination skin. I love the Liquid Silk Canvas primer. If you can ever get a sample, it’s worth trying.

  2. Thank you for your honest assessment, Allison! I read quite a number of reviews that echoed your feelings about it, and that stopped my from buying it. I wish that you loved it because even at a discount, this is a very expensive sunscreen– especially for such a tiny amount of product!

    1. Wondering where the reviews were that you read about Tatcha Silk Sunscreen…Sephora? The reviews on the Tatcha website were so overwhelmingly positive that I feel I was led astray, lol

      1. Hi Allison, I read lots of negative reviews on the Sephora website. A lot of them were serious complaints about the packaging, but there were plenty about the formula itself being subpar. It was definitely enough to think twice before adding it to my cart!

    1. So happy to hear from you today, Marcia, and hope you are feeling a little better. I think you are right about spillover from brand love. I certainly hope that Tatcha doesn’t leave out the negative reviews from their site
