Back in October, I posted a sneak peek of NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Vault that launched exclusively at Ulta Beauty in late October. I’ve been wearing the shades since then, and if you’re looking for a gift with the Wow Factor, you definitely should consider this amazing lippie vault!
This vault is so much fun to play with, perfect for a true lipstick lover. Plus it’s a great way to discover which shades you might want to buy in the full size. I want to share swatches so you can see what you’d be getting.
The vault consists of 36 snack size Soft Matte Lip Creams, each with 0.15 fl. oz. They have a whipped mousse-like consistency. Although some occasionally have a tiny clump or two, the clump goes away when you apply the Lip Cream with the slant-tip sponge applicator.
The finish is opaque, though it usually requires at least two passes to achieve opacity and evenness. The Lip Creams are accurately named Soft Matte Lip Cream – it is not a liquid lipstick, it does not dry down to nothing or to a completely flat matte. It is not dry looking, and it feels creamy though it doesn’t look shiny. It doesn’t emphasize lines the way a lot of liquid mattes do. The best part about these lippies for me is that they are not at all drying to my already dry lips, so I can actually wear them! The shade I’m wearing below is Antwerp.
Does NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream stay on? Why yes, it does. Although it may not be as good as say, Stila Stay All Day, it does last for hours. When drinking from a glass, a little of the creaminess does transfer, but it doesn’t fade the lipstick. How about after eating? I ate a bowl of bananas and the most delicious thick Greek yogurt for lunch, and the Lip Cream did not come off on the spoon, and my lipstick looked perfectly intact. After dinner, the shade did fade, but it left behind enough that it still looked like I was wearing some lipstick.
BTW, the lipstick shades are named after cities around the world. The shades range from neutrals to fashion colors like brown and blue, from nudes to reds to oranges to purples to browns. Let’s look at the swatches! The sunlight kept changing so I’m sorry that my light skin tone with cool undertones as well as the shades, changed especially in the second and sixth photos where they became warmer in the stronger sunlight.

So there you have it! I have so many favorites among the 36 shades.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Vault is priced at about $65. The vault really is a good value. The full size Lip Creams hold 0.27 fl. oz. (versus 0.15 fl. oz. in the snack size), so the full size is just less than twice as large, and they’re priced at $6 each. So if you figure out the total cost of the Vault, it would be about $3 per tube or $108. $65 is a bargain!
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Vault is available exclusively at Ulta Beauty, and it includes two shades that are not available on the NYX website in the full size: Bangkok and Los Angeles. The Vault does not appear to be online at Ulta Beauty, so you may have to visit the store to snag it. But I noticed that there are sets of 3 full size tubes available for $11.99 at Ulta as well.
NYX is a cruelty-free brand. And there are no parabens, sulfates or mineral oil in these lipsticks. However, there is dimethicone if you’re sensitive to that ingredient. For me, dimethicone adds the creamy slip that I like so much.
All shades contain the following ingredients unless otherwise noted:
Isohexadecane, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Dimethicone, Beeswax/Cera Alba/Cire d’Abeille, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate, Talc, Cyclopentasiloxane, Propylene Carbonate, Silica, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Rosin/Colophonium/Colophane, Barium Sulfate (CI 77120), Phenoxyethanol, Flavor/Aroma, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal. I walk by this numerous time a day whenever I work and you have no idea how tempted I am to purchase it! I had to remind myself numerous time a shift that I have enough lip products to last me two lifetime and I don’t need this vault. LOL!

Just curious, Shireen, where are they selling this vault in Canada? No bloggers need more lipsticks lol, but it would make a great holiday gift for a lipstick lover especially one with dry lips who would like to wear a matte lipstick 🙂

That’s so interesting, Shireen! Ulta made an exclusive deal with NYX here. In fact, they oddly don’t even have the vault on the Ulta website – you have to go into the stores to buy it. I think it’s smart that NYX is selling it wherever the brand is sold in Canada, and at a discount now. If you calculate the price on the vault in the U.S., it’s a good deal – but it is still rather pricey especially for those who shop drugstore brands IMHO. I am having a lot of fun experimenting with all these shades I wouldn’t typically wear.
These are a perfect size for traveling or just always keeping a couple in the purse while you’re on the go!

The colors are so rich and saturated! This is a really beautiful set! I am pleased to hear that they neither dry down to be too matte, nor are they drying. There are only a few shades that I would actually wear, and therefore it would be more cost effective for me to buy them individually, but I would still be wowed if I received it as a gift, and I would definitely experiment with the colors that I wouldn’t have normally tried. I’m having fun with it, Helen, as I don’t usually wear matte lipsticks. And because I have them, I have tried a few shades out of my comfort zone, but I’m mostly wearing my favorite shades.
I love the mix of colors, especially the deep shades.

Yeah, I think a teen who’s into makeup would have a lot of fun with this set. But I hear you, I’m having a ton of fun trying all of these out. The tubes don’t contain all that much inside so it’s relatively easy to use them up and move on to the next. And the shades are more wearable than some of them look on the tube.
I have always enjoyed the lip creams from NYX… I still have a few in my collection that I rotate through. I seen this set and thought about picking it up – but I know I’d never get through it. Even at the size they are, I’d still take a while but I appreciate they put it all together like that – that’s awesome.

It definitely would be difficult to go through them all. I will most likely give away some of the shades I know I won’t wear. But the tubes are smaller than I thought in terms of the amount of product so I think it’ll be easier to use up some of these than I actually expected. And I’m surprised that more of the shades are wearable for me than I expected. Fun to play with for sure!
It would take me a year to swatch all of those. There are at least half a dozen shades in there that I’d wear and I bet I could find friends who’d want the rest.

I didn’t think there’d be that many that I would wear, but the shades looked different when I switched them then the shade on the tube. I will probably give the purple ones and the blue one away to a friend’s young daughters, but I’m actually wearing more of them than I thought I would. Fun to play with!
There are so many beautiful colors there. It’d be hard to pick a favorite, although Manila jumped out at me.

This is definitely a fun vault to experiment with. And the little size of the tubes is so good for carrying.
I see some wonderful colours and i must say that i also have already enough lip product that could last me for a very long time. I like that these ones are smaller than the regular ones.

I have to laugh, Leanie, that before I became a beauty blogger, I would use the one or two lipsticks that I owned until I used them up. Now I have about 150 lipsticks, not counting these babies. Too funny. I agree with you that the smaller size is a positive. I know I’ll use some of these shades up quickly, and that makes me feel accomplished!

I love the idea of owning a “lipstick vault.” The shades look gorgeous, and I bet you could combine two shades to create your own bespoke color. Looks like you had a blast playing with the Nyx kit.
I never thought of combining the shades, but that’s a great idea, PJ! Thank you. There are a couple of browns that I need to warm up, and a purple that I need to tone down, so that’s just what I’ll try 🙂
I think I tried one of these when they first came out, but the shade was too light. I definitely need to try again, because there are some really great shades.
