Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar

Do you remember Julie Christie?  She was stunning (and still is) in Doctor Zhivago, Darling, Shampoo, Petulia in the Sixties and Seventies. I loved her long (usually) blonde hair, bangs and the pale lipstick she wore.

So, I was channeling my inner Julie Christie when I tried Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar in Annika, a “toned-up neutral peach”. Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar is a new kind of lip product: think lip stain meets lip gloss, sort of.  It comes in a tube with a separate little lip brush. It goes on wet and dries to a kind of gloss. It’s opaque, highly pigmented and long lasting. It’s loaded with oils so it’s not supposed to be drying.

Lip Tar comes in 46 “normal” shades plus green, blue, yellow, black, and white that you can mix with the other colors to create zillions of custom lip colors. There are frosted shades, neons and neutrals.

This product has been on my radar for a while. When I was in Sephora not long ago, I decided to give it a try. As usual, I asked one of the sales associates for a sample.

I wanted to sample Memento, described as “pink/plum neutral”,

but somehow I ended up with Annika, the pale peach.

A little goes a long, long way. I put on too much initially, and it took a long time to dry. If you apply just a little, it dries immediately. It is extremely lightweight, and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. It is long lasting. Eleven hours later, after eating a meal or two, it was still lightly visible on my lips. Unfortunately, in spite of the emollients in the formula, it was just a little bit drying for me…but then I have very dry lips. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet been able to isolate the ingredient in many lipsticks that is drying for me. Any ideas?

Here’s a swatch of Lip Tar, Annika:

and what Annika looks like on me. Since I usually wear brighter shades, the pale peach is a real change. And it does look like a throw back to the Sixties. Although the bright light in the room makes the photo a little difficult to see, I think you can tell that Lip Tar does have a glossy look to it.

In sum, I think Lip Tar is a pretty good product…though I’m not sure how different it is from Revlon ColorStay Liquid Lipstick or L’Oreal Endless Liquid Lipstick for much less money etc.  With Lip Tar, if you buy a few shades including the unusual primary colors, you can really get creative. In fact, Lip Tar is available in a variety of sets of four shades so you can mix away. And it seems like they are always coming out with new shades. But for me, I’m on the fence about it because of my dry lips and the price.

Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar is $18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz. It’s available at Sephora, Amazon, and the company website: www.occmakeup.com. It’s 100% vegan and cruelty-free. If you’re gluten-free, you’ll have to check into the origin of the Vitamin E.

Hi Allison, I curious about the texture of this…. it sounds like when it dries it’s not sticky, is that correct? I don’t wear much lip gloss because I don’t like the ooey-gooey consistency. But I’d like to try this brand because I love that color and I like the “artistic” possibilities!”

Kim, this might be exactly what you’re looking for. It dries completely down to your lips, no stickiness at all. It feels like you’re not wearing anything on your lips. That and the colors are the unique properties of the product. Next time you’re at Sephora give it a try. And check out the “sets”, they are great for “artistic” possibilities and this is a product, if you have a bunch of lip brushes, that you can share with your daughters. I would like to try some more shades.

  3. Damn, I was obsessed with looking like Julie Christie back then!!! But light lipstick is just not good on me. I’ll do it every once in a while with really dark dramatic eyes but for the most part, I’m a medium to dark color, mostly shades of red girl. Much to my disappointment….

Shades of red look great with your coloring, Cheryl. Very dramatic! I love your Facebook/Bellashoot photo. The very light shades don’t really work for me either. I can’t say that shade, Annika, that I tried for this post was a success for me. I wish I could wear a beige, but I just look washed out. I guess I’m a bright girl after all.

  4. I have one lip tar (can’t recall the color) and I bought it because of youtube hype and I just don’t get the love for this product. It’s messy and you need a brush or finger to apply. Plus, like you mentioned .. there are other readily available liquid lipsticks at the drug store at a better price. I guess I just prefer lipstick / lip gloss.

Agree, Monica. This is one product you have to apply at home in the morning with the brush and hope it lasts all day. I did get long-lastingness from it, but not sure I love it enough to plunk down the $18. On the other hand, it could work for my friend who doesn’t like the stickiness of gloss but wants some shine.
