OWN Firming Silk Concentrate

Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to try OWN Firming Silk Concentrate, an anti-aging product, from OWN Skin Health. Like the OWN Lifting Eye Cream and Refining Moisture Night Cream, I received it from iFabbo, an organization for beauty and style bloggers. I liked those two products, and I am a serum user, so I was looking forward to trying it.

OWN Serum

As I have mentioned in previous posts about OWN Skin Health, it is a San Francisco-based company that is research-oriented and uses plant-based ingredients in its products. I just checked out the company of the website of the Environmental Working Group, an organization that reports on the safety of ingredients in beauty and personal care products. OWN is rated low for ingredient concerns. And that’s a very good thing.

OWN Firming Silk Concentrate comes in a big glass bottle with a big glass dropper.

OWN Dropper

My key complaint with the product is that the dropper is too big, and it doses too much serum. The serum sort of rolls down the sides of the dropper when I remove it from the bottle, and it also comes out of the dropper. As a result, it’s a bit messy to use. I let it drip into my hands, and then pat the serum on to my slightly wet face and follow up with my moisturizer. When I use the right amount of serum, my moisturizer goes on fine. When I use too much from the dropper, it takes a while for my moisturizer to “dry”.

The serum itself is thick and clear. A little goes a long way. Unlike hyaluronic acid, this serum does not dry to a tight feeling but feels moist on the skin.

Like the other two products I tried, the box says it “contains ‘patented CLA’ (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) plant-based technology designed to work with your body’s unique biocheistry and three main layers of skin.” The box lists the benefits promised as:

  • enhanced collagen levels
  • strengthened skin moisture barrier to help skin retain more moisture
  • increases skin metabolism for softer, smoother, and younger-looking skin.

The website says that the serum helps to “rebuild the skin’s structures for brighter, taut and genuinely younger-looking skin”.

Since I am still using the OWN eye cream and night cream, I am getting lots of CLA, I assume, and the boxes say that all three products should be delivering those benefits. I just noticed the following relatively modest claims on a product card I received with the serum:

“In just 8 weeks, the OWN regimen is clinically proven to increase:

  • FIRMER looking skin by 20%
  • EVEN SKIN TONE by 31%
  • SOFTER & smoother skin by 33%.”

As I wrote in my OWN Refining Moisture Night Cream review, my skin looks and feels good, so they must be doing something, and I’m not at 8 weeks yet.

INGREDIENTS

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Coco-Caprylate, Conjugated Linoleic Acid*, Tocopherol

The OWN Firming Silk Concentrate has surprisingly few ingredients. Since caprylic acid is the number one ingredient, I looked it up. Here’s what Isabel Prontes of eHow Style says about it:

“Capric/caprylic triglycerid is a combined triester, a blend of capric and caprylic acids. It is also known as fractionated coconut oil. Its most popular use is as an emollient (for calming, and softening out the skin), due to the fact that it is capable of rapid penetration. It is also very commonly found in vitamins, as it is an effective dispersing agent. It is a very popular ingredient in many skin products…”

Coconut oil is very popular these days, and I guess it also serves as the carrier for the CLA and the vitamin E in the formula.

The price of OWN Firming Silk Concentrate is $24.99 for 1.0 fl.oz./30 ml. I think it’s a big bottle that will last a long time, a good value. OWN products are available on the company’s website, at Ulta stores and website, at Whole Foods, at Amazon and other websites.
