Almost two months ago, I wrote about my excitement at trying My OWN App, a new app for my iphone that claims to measures the change in skin over time and the effectiveness of skincare products. The app was developed by OWN Skin Health, a San Francisco-based brand that focuses on ingredients from natural sources and products without harsh chemicals. As instructed by the app, I took a baseline photo of my face without makeup with my iphone camera, uploaded it to my account at the My OWN App website, and got back an assessment of the current state of my skin. I was happy that it was better on most dimensions in comparison to women in my age group. Except for the age spots and sun damage. But basically good news.
I “bought” OWN Lifting Eye Cream (http://bit.ly/11KWld4 to learn more) from iFabbo, a site for beauty blogger to post reviews and get hints and help on developing a successful blog. I used the iFabbo “currency” that I accrued to buy the eye cream, so it can be considered a product distributed for promotional purposes.
On the side of the package, the product promised improvements in firmness, evenness of skintone, and skin softness. The other side of the box has a graph that shows the percent improvement for each skin benefit after 8 and 12 weeks of use. The product claims, “Own’s patented CLA is an ingredient that works on all signs of aging at once: Boost collagen for 29% FIRMER and fuller-looking skin, Enhance cell turnover for 41% more EVEN SKIN TONE, Improve skin’s moisture barrier for 50% SOFTER and skin in 12 weeks.” In addition, “CLA bioactivating technology” (concentrated linoleic acid) is a substance that has shown promise in lightening the color of skin damage and in increasing collagen production.
After about two months, I wanted to find out whether the product “worked as promised” so I went back to the My OWN App. My baseline photo was still in there. I took a new “after” photo, uploaded it to the site as directed, and lo and behold, it replaced my initial photo which appears to be lost and gone forever. Unfortunately, I didn’t bother writing down the initial assessment because I expected it to still be there. Now, I got a new assessment of my skin, but no way to compare the first to the second assessment. Bummer. Plus, this time it seems to be emphasizing different skin issues than the first time. And my wrinkle count around the eyes may have gone up rather than down. Hmm, not what I expected.
I tried to contact the company by email, but the app wouldn’t send the email. The next day, I tried calling the two phone numbers listed on My OWN App, but got a message that the phone numbers were disconnected. Finally, I went to the website and sent an email from there. It said I’d get a reply within 24 hours. It’s been 2 weeks.
My own assessment (pardon the pun) is that OWN Lifting Eye Cream did not noticeably change the appearance of the skin around my eyes. Unfortunately, it does not appear to be firmer and my skintone around my eyes does not seem to be more even. The wrinkles/crow’s feet are no less noticeable, unfortunately.
In spite of the fact that OWN Lifting Eye Cream after 8 weeks hasn’t changed the appearance of the skin around my eyes in any significant way based on my personal evaluation, I liked the aesthetics of the product a lot. The cream is just the right weight — not too heavy, not too light. It feels moisturizing and soothing to the dry skin around my eyes. It’s comfortable to wear! In addition, I love the sleek, skinny tube.
I’m on the fence about whether I’ll repurchase. It’s just a little more expensive than the drugstore brands, and it’s a lot less than the Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Eye Cream that I bought recently. I think it’ll depend on whether I can get a deal on it.
I seldom expect skincare products to push back the hands of time, but instead to slow them down going forward. If OWN didn’t make such a big deal about product efficacy with it’s claims and charts and the iphone app to measure the product’s effectiveness, I probably wouldn’t feel let down.
So I recommend OWN Lifting Eye Cream if you are looking for a good, comfortable to wear, affordable, eye moisturizer rather than a revolutionary anti-aging eye cream.
