Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Blush, Plum Rose

I’ve been seeing a lot reviews for various Physicians Formula Butter products lately. Because I’m a fan of cream-to-powders or creamy powders, I wanted to try it. I had a $5 off coupon at Ulta, so I decided to give it a go.

I Bought This

At Ulta, just like at CVS, there was a very small selection of anything from the Butter collection. They had several Butter Bronzers, but I don’t wear bronzer. Among the blushes, there were two choices, Plum Rose and Natural Glow. I picked Plum Rose because I hoped it would have more color than Natural. While writing this review, I noticed that Target carries Rose and Nude.

According to Ulta, Murumuru Butter Blush is made up of a “Skin-Loving Blend: Infused with a powerful blend of Murumuru Butter, Cupuacu Butter and Tucuma Butter, from the lush and nutrient-rich Amazon. Packed with essential fatty acids and pro-vitamins that soften, condition and moisturize skin, leaving it silky soft.” Sounds promising!

Packaging-wise, the Butter Blush is very similar to the adorable heart blush I purchased and reviewed a few years ago. It’s packaged in plastic with a clear top, has a built-in usable mirror and a compartment for the hidden brush or applicator.

Instead of a brush, the Butter Blush comes with a two sided foam applicator. I’m not sure if that’s because the applicator works better with this formula.

First, the scent is divine if you’re a fan of coconut scent like I am. It smells likes the islands in a blush! But if you’re not a coconut fan, you won’t like this because the coconut scent is strong, and it lasts for a while before disappearing.

The Butter Blush formula feels like a creamy powder especially when I do a finger swatch. It feels lightweight, very smooth on the skin, and is easy to apply and blend.

The trouble is the pigmentation. I was expecting a mauve shade. Instead, Plum Rose has virtually no color and therefore no presence at all.finger swatch of Plum Rose shade of Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Blush, neversaydiebeauty.com

I tried to do a swatch on my arm, but you can’t see the color. At. All. When I apply it to my cheeks, it makes me look like I have less color than I already do (though one reviewer considered this a plus for her to tone down her redness or if she applied too much of another blush).

According to the Target website, Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Blush has a “Moisturizing formula (that) features ultra refined pearl and soft focus pigments that smooth skin texture and delivers a gorgeous nude color.” The pearl doesn’t show up on me, though a couple of reviewers on the Ulta website mentioned that they got a little bit of a highlight.

Some of the pluses of the product include:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Paraben free
  • Gluten free
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Cruelty free
  • Clinically tested
  • Oil-free

In spite of those product positives listed above, I am going to return this to Ulta. Even with $5 off, it’s not worth it because I’ll never wear the Murumuru Butter Blush. It doesn’t work, or it’s not really a blush.

As much as I love the scent, I don’t recommend the Murumuru Butter Blush. At Ulta, it was priced at $12.99 for 0.26 oz./7.5 g. The price varies widely according to where you buy it. Instead, if you see the highlighters in stores (and I have not), pick up one of those to try because the reviews are much more positive.

  1. The reviews have been terrible for these blushers. Unless you’re ghost pale then you will not get any colour from these! No idea why they even bother releasing the blushers into the market.

    1. It’s so bizarre that this was such a miss for PF. Didn’t they test them first, I wonder?

  2. I tried a shade a few weeks ago (the peach I think) and it was awful. No pigmentation at all, so I returned it. Too bad because they look so pretty and smell great!

    1. Yes, I love the coconut scent, but otherwise it’s useless! Makes you wonder if they ever tested it before launch.

  3. This definitely sounds like a miss, and I don’t blame you for returning it. It looks more like a bronzer than a blush! I definitely would like to try one of their Butter Highlighters, they look lovely and the reviews have been favorable.

    1. Unfortunately, it’s not even like a bronzer – it’s like a translucent setting powder, maybe. If there had been a tester, I never would have bought it but with drugstore makeup, you never know till you get it home and try it 🙁

  4. This is so not for me. I’ve seen reviews that they were the best thing since sliced bread which surprised me. Between the fragrance and no color, it’s a big miss. I actually had to give away my heart PF ones because even without opening it the lavender was way too strong for me.

    1. I haven’t used my Happy Hearts in a while so I didn’t even remember that it was lavender scented! I’ll have to find it and use it again. But the Butter Blush is unfortunately a big fail IMO. I get the reason for the coconut scent since they’re doing a Brazilian goddess thing, but the lack of pigment seems anything but Brazilian where color is king

  5. I really wish there’s Ulta here in Hawaii. I think I will enjoy it more than Sephora. But thanks for the warning, I’m not buying this for sure.

    1. Ulta really is a terrific store. Their frequent shopper point program is terrific. And I like having prestige and drugstore brands in one spot. I hope Ulta makes it to HI one of these days. There are so many good drugstore products these days including ones from Physicians Formula, but this isn’t one of them 😉

  6. I got mine last year an though not as pigmented as I’d like, it does show up on me. I wonder if they changed the formula?

    1. I wonder too, Cindy. The Butter Blush that is sold on Target.com is two different shades and is ever so slightly smaller at 0.24 oz. than the product I bought at Ulta that’s also available at CVS. At any rate, it’s pretty disappointing. I read through the consumer reviews on the Ulta website, and though there were a few favorers especially because of the coconut scent, most complained about the lack of pigmentation/that the product didn’t show up on their skin.

  7. This color works well on my pale skin but I can’t see it working for anyone who doesn’t have a very fair porcelain complexion.

  8. Oh boo that it didn’t work for you. I have the butter bronzer and adore it. I too am a fan of the scents of these products.

    1. I’m glad that the bronzer is a good one. The blush really isn’t a blush at all. It seems like something went wrong if so many of the reviews complain about the same thing.

  9. I had wanted to try this but the poor reviews swayed me. It’s too bad, it looks like it could be really pretty.

    1. I had read good reviews about the Physicians Formula Butter Highlighters, but none of the CVS or Ulta stores that I checked carried it, so I erroneously assumed that the Butter Blush would be just as good. Wrong.
