As you recall, I was disappointed in the shade, Evoke, a brown-copper lipgloss from Melt Cosmetics. During the winter, I bought Séance, a gorgeous rose gold. I loved the shade, but it migrated into the lines around my mouth. Wearing it with MAC Prep + Prime Lip Base seemed to solve that problem.
After the disappointment with Evoke, I, a glutton for punishment, decided to risk $5 to buy the last of the shades that I found attractive, Trance, what I thought was a ruby red metallic in the lip swatch on the Melt website.
While everything else seems to take forever to arrive during the pandemic, Melt Trance got here in the blink of an eye. I could hardly wait to check out the color. Even the deep red metallic outer box seemed promising!
Trance is a very deep red-plum shade, probably burgundy, rather than the ruby red I thought it might be. Actually, I think it’s a beautiful shade. I seldom wear such dark lipsticks, but this looks like it would be a nice change in the autumn or during the winter holidays.
I was eager to try it out. First I applied MAC Prep + Prime because I figured that there was no way I could wear this deep red without it.
The sponge wand is slim, flat and easy to use. But since having my cataract surgery, I can’t see close and I screwed up a bit toward the corner of my mouth.
As usual, Melt Metal Gloss Trance was creamy but very lightweight. It is among the most comfortable lipglosses that I have worn. It isn’t sticky. It appeared that I may have lucked out.
Who do you know who puts on dark red lipgloss with no makeup to work in the garden? I guess that’s me. I have nowhere to go these days, so why not try it out at home? Five hours later, I decided to check it out in the mirror and see if the shade was still on. Well, the color was still almost as bright as when I first applied it. However, in spite of the Prep + Prime, Trance had migrated beyond my lip line, and it had settled very obviously in the lines around my lips. Ugh. I was going to take a photo of it, but it was too hideous.
Now this was a torture test because it was about 80 degrees and humid, and I was working outdoors wearing lipgloss. Nevertheless, I was disappointed in Melt Metal Gloss. Again.
I removed it with Bioderma HydraBio Micellar Water, and unlike with Evoke that wouldn’t come off with micellar water, I had no trouble with Trance. Next, I applied Illamasqua Coloring Pencil Lip Crayon and Liner in what I thought was a dark red shade. Unfortunately, it was a deep rose and I need a dark burgundy pencil. Somewhere I have a mini Givenchy lipliner that is dark burgundy, but where is it? Anyway, I tried the Illamasqua liner just to see if it would help contain Trance. So with both Prep + Prime and lipliner, it seems to stay in place. But I don’t think I would feel confident wearing Trance to an event or even out to dinner. I wouldn’t want to take a chance and end up embarrassed if it bled.
In sum, as pretty as this shade is, my recommendation is skip Melt Metal Gloss. After buying three different shades, fortunately all on sale, I can say with certainty that they’re just not worth it. In spite of being comfortable, non-sticky and lightweight, they’re not reliable. Melt makes terrific eyeshadow, but I will stick with Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipgloss, a much more reliable opaque gloss.

This is one of the reasons I haven’t been wearing glosses lately. The color looks really good on you, it’s too bad that it strayed. Another primer you might try is Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Lip Cream. It works pretty well with darker lip colors
Well, as pretty as this shade is, I totally understand why you are done!

Allison, guess I was lucky that it wasn’t on sale when I wanted to order it!! But I am sorry that neither of these gorgeous shades didn’t pass the wear taste.
I am so glad that you didn’t waste your money on these, Sandy. Even if they didn’t bleed, I’m not sure that Trance would have suited you because it’s such a dark vampy shade. I certainly gave these glosses from Melt the old college try, but they are just too much work for not enough payoff! I will stick with ABH
I hate to s it but it’s not a flattering color on you. Definitely not worth all the items you need to make it work. At least you got reviews out of these. LOL
I think you’re right, Marcia. In spite of the bleeding, this dark burgundy is too dark for me, and it certainly isn’t worth all the work I have to go through to make it passable.
