Last year, I saw a sponsored post on Facebook for Mrs. Meyers Hand Soap. What caught my eye were the brightly colored labels on the bottles arranged in a jelly bean colored ring.
I thought to myself that I needed to try that brand. Next trip to CVS, I stood in front the hand soap shelf and tried to choose among the different colored labels and scents from Mrs. Meyers. I chose Lavender, but I can’t remember why that scent stood out to me. I was impressed when I read the label and saw that it is made with olive oil and aloe vera.
Because I’m obsessed with finishing things up, I waited a few months to start using it. I wanted to finish up a sandalwood foaming hand soap first.
Finally, the day came when the foaming hand soap was finished, and I was excited to try the Mrs. Meyers Hand Soap. I pumped some onto my hands, and I stopped dead in my tracks. It was AWFUL!! The smell was terrible. It didn’t smell like lavender to me. I don’t know what it smelled like. I tried it a couple of more times over the course of a week or two, and it was no better. I found myself making sure that I washed my hands at the kitchen sink instead of in my bathroom.
A few weeks later, I was invited to a friend’s house for dinner, and she had a couple of Mrs. Meyers pump bottles at her kitchen and bathroom sinks. I asked her if she liked Mrs. Meyers, and she said she loved it. I told her I had a just about full bottle of lavender that I was looking to give away, and she said she would be happy to have it. A couple of days later, I left it for her in her mailbox. I haven’t seen her since then, and I haven’t heard back from her about it.
So my question to you all is: do you think I got a bad bottle of Mrs. Meyers Lavender Hand Soap, or is it me, or do you hate the scent too?
Shortly thereafter, I went to CVS and bought a bottle of Everyone Hand Soap in the scent, Meyer Lemon + Mandarin. It smells delightful. It’s made with plant extracts and pure essential oils. At my kitchen sink, I have just about finished up a bottle of EO Hand Soap in Peppermint + Tea Tree. It was a fresh, revitalizing peppermint scent. Loved it.
So for me, EO Everyone is hands down the winner. I will most likely never purchase Mrs. Meyers Hand Soap again, unless I find out that I’m really missing out. Are any of the other Mrs. Meyers scents wonderful? Have you had a good experience with the Lavender scent? Have you ever gotten a bottle of Mrs. Meyers that was “off”? Tell me about your experiences with Mrs. Meyers.

I saw Meyers hand soap for sale where I work and I’ll give it a sniff at work today and see how I like the lavender one. Maybe you got a bad batch?
That’s what I was wondering. Thank you in advance, Shireen, for taking a sniff for me.
I wasn’t a fan of the Mrs. Meyers lavender but I do enjoy the basil scent.
Thanks, Tamara, for letting me know that you had a similar reaction to the lavender. I’ll see if I can sneak a sniff of the basil next time I’m at the store!
I don’t remember using or smelling their lavender soap, but it might be worth taking a sniff of it in-store (assuming you can find an open bottle), but it sounds as though you may have gotten a turned bottle. I only remember using their Meyer Lemon, and it was absolutely delectable, as I recall!
I was afraid to open a bottle in my local store because they watch everyone and everything, but I’ll try. Maybe I’ll try to sniff a few if I can get away with it. I think it might have turned too. The EO Meyer Lemon + Mandarin is lovely.
My son and his wife use Mrs Myers exclusively and love it. I am not that impressed with the brand. It’s fine; there’s nothing wrong with it but also nothing amazing and fantastic either. I gave up on liquid soaps and use bar soap, hand made by a friend. Her soap is out of this world good with scent and ingredients. She will be going commercial this summer – fingers crossed for her.
Allison email the company directly. They will answer your question, if it is “bad” they will replace it for you. 🙋🏻❤️
DiEtta, I foolishly didn’t jot down any identifying info. Unfortunately, it would be difficult for them to figure out the batch. 🙁
Love Mrs Meyers and have been using for close to 10 years! Love the basil dish soap and buy lemon verbena counter spray over and over (can buy concentrate and refill bottle).
Mary, you are the second person who has recommended the basil scent. I will have to try that for sure. I grow lemon verbena so that would be a good choice too. Thank you for the recommendations!
I haven’t tried this brand, but if it smells that bad, I’d send a note to the company or at least contact your local CVS to ask if maybe they had a good explanation? I’d also check back in with your friend to see if she liked it – maybe you and their scent profile don’t mesh well?
Kristi, I wish I had jotted down an identifying number before I gave it away. I will have to ask my friend when I see her if the bottle I gave her smelled like her usual Mrs. Meyers Lavender. I will be very embarrassed if she says no!
I actually love both of them equally! It’s possible you got a bad batch, but I would try some of the other scents before you give up on em!
I’ll try to take a sniff in the store before I buy next time!
You should have tried one of the ones at your friend’s house to see if they also smelled bad! I haven’t tried this brand but that sounds dreadful.
I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me, Kerry. I should have done that when she was out of the room since I gave her my bottle!! It didn’t smell “spoiled”, it just didn’t smell good 😉
I’ve sniffed Mrs. Meyers at Target and the fragrances are very strong. I’ve avoided them. I use JR Watkins in lemon, I’ve bought dozens of them.
I will have to look for JR Watkins and take a sniff! I love EO Everyone, but I had been hearing raves about Mrs. Meyers. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good first experience and I’ll probably stick with EO or other brands. “One-trial learning”
I never tried this brand but about the smell, you would email directly to company.
Unfortunately, I didn’t note any number to identify the batch from the label before I gave it away. So other than complaining that it didn’t smell good or smell anything like lavender, I have no proof of it. My fault!
Sorry I can’t help, I haven’t tried either brand. I’m using Reverie Farms in Lemongrass and I love it!
I was using up the Reverie Farms foaming hand soap in Sandalwood for a couple of months before I started the Mrs. Meyers Lavender – maybe it went off while it was sitting in my closet? EO Everyone is a great, natural brand. You should try it someday!
I never tried both but I do like Dr Bronner’s lavender line
Me too. I love Dr. Bronner’s almond, rose and lavender – so nice
I love Mrs. Meyers soaps and use them throughout my house !I must say the lavender scent is better appreciated after washing your hands with it. To smell it in the bottle is a pretty odd smell.
I love the Honeysuckle ( it’s in my guest bathroom 😜) I use the dishwashing soap and the counter cleaner. My favorite scent for the kitchen is Rosemary dish soap and Basil hand soap. I use the lavender hand soap in the family bathroom and sometimes the lemon verbena. I see they are coming out with Peony and Lilac too.
Lois, thank you for the feedback! Next time I’m at your house (I need to come over and return your freezer packs!), I will go around and smell everything you have from Mrs Meyers and see which scents work best for me. I know so many people, including you, are big fans of Mrs Meyers. I think I noticed the not so great smell of the lavender when I pumped it out of the bottle onto my hands, and I don’t remember if it smelled any better after washing my hands. I’ll have to ask my neighbor that I passed it off too if she thought it smelled the same as usual.
I love the LE Lilac scent from Mrs.Meyers!
I looked at my local CVS for it today, but they only had lavender (that smelled much better than the one I had) and Lemon Verbena that was too herbal for me. I’m a huge fan of lilacs so I hope I’ll find it
I hope you do too! Hannaford and Target usually get them this time of year. They are most likely on an off shelf display. 😊
No Hannafords around here, but I’ll check when I go to Target. Thank you!
The second one sounds totally fabulous, I love citrus scents in the bathroom!
I love all of the EO Everyone scents I’ve tried. Meyer Lemon + Mandarin is fabulous as a bathroom or kitchen scent
I’m in the UK and we don’t have either of these brands, but your posts was really interesting. Sorry you had a bad experience with the lavender!
I sniffed one of the new bottles of lavender Mrs. Meyers in the store this weekend, and mine definitely had turned. Oh well. Both brands are good brands. Maybe they’ll hit the UK one of these years, but you have so many wonderful bath and body products in the UK that I love that we don’t get here!
I bought a 2 pack of MM multi surface cleaner because I heard such good things about it. The smell is so repulsive to me that im pouring it down the sink. Ill go back to making my own. The smell lingers, which everyone loves about that brand, but not me.
Irma, I felt the same way about the Mrs. Meyer liquid hand soap that I tried. You used the right word to describe the scent, “repulsive”. I am a scent lover, but something about this one was sickening. That’s so cool that you make your own cleaning products! Thanks for weighing in!
