It must have been my radar that sought it out, but I can’t remember how I found out about the Urban Decay website sale. (An email alert, maybe?) I had just received my April ipsy bag, and I was one of the lucky ones who received a travel size 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Black Velvet. I love Urban Decay eye pencils because they are so creamy and easy to apply. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve got another travel size in Zero and a black/brown double-sided pencil I picked up as an impulse item near the checkout at Sephora during the holidays. Though I’m all set with black Urban Decay eye pencils, I don’t have any colors. What a perfect time to add some color to my collection, during a sale!
When I saw the Urban Decay Black Market 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set at 33% off, I couldn’t resist. $24 instead of $36. A deal.
I really wasn’t sure what the colors would be like. I thought they might be super-bright. I was relieved when they arrived today that they are muted colors, perfect for my over 40 eyes. They’re great for tightlining or as regular eyeliners. Love ’em! I’m wearing Desperation in this pic:
The Urban Decay travel set comes with 6 travel size pencils, 0.03 oz/0.08g each or about 3 inches of actual, usable pencil. That’s enough for me. By the time I use them up, I’ll be ready to try something else. The shades, as described by Urban Decay, are:
- West: dark brown pearl
- Desperation: taupe-grey matte
- Black Market: charcoal black satin
- Riot: smoky purple shimmer with violet micro-particles
- Apathy: metallic olive green shimmer
- Ink: deep navy blue satin.
In my swatches, I’m not seeing the shimmer and particles that UD says are there. They all look matte except Apathy where I can see a subtle shimmer. Maybe I need to use them more to see the finishes, but I can tell you they are not sparkly at all. And they’re all great shades that I’ll use a lot.
I swatched the shades to show you, and when I tried to wash them off with soap and water, they wouldn’t come off! I had to use makeup remover, lol. So, that means to me that they’re definitely waterproof, and they’ll be quite long-wearing. A couple of women have told me that UD pencils fade on their eyelids that are on the oily side, but with my dry eyelids I know that won’t be an issue.
Here are the swatches (sorry about the big scratch):

I have oily lids and these didn’t work on me, now the UD lip pencils are definitely a different story.

I’m glad you have good luck with the lipliners, Norah!
I love UD 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils. These pencils work great for me. I actually like the travel size pencils. They get used before they dry up and have to be tossed away. And I can have more colours to play with, for my money. 😀

I couldn’t agree more, Erika. I would much rather buy the travel size than the big ones.
I am one of those people these pencils just don’t work well for. 🙁

Me, too, Phyrra. My favorite!
I wish these worked for me. I am a huge fan of their shade perversion since it is the blackest black, but for some reason my eyes wont allow these to be waterproof. I guess the oily skin on them 🙁 Great post and super great shade. I really think West is gorgeous!!
Jamie @ Makeuplifelove recently posted…The Best Foundation Tip EVER…
Yes, I’m lucky they work so well for me, Jamie. I have Perversion, I believe, in the double-ended pencil. It is super-black. It’s so funny that I have to almost scrape off these pencils they stay on so well for me, and for others, they don’t last. Go figure
Apathy looks gorgeous on other people, but these pencils just didn’t work for me at all.
Anastasia recently posted…Lancome Rouge in Love Rosy Rouge 333B Review, Swatches, Pictures
That’s too bad, Anastasia. They are perfect for me. Everyone is different 😉
They certainly do look matte! Bummer, I’d hoped they’d show the sparkle, too.

I’m OK without the sparkle, truth be told, Nidia. Matte is fine with me!
I absolutely want this, but .. ugh, UD liners are not 24/7 for me. So sad!

these pencils are not suit on my complexion. did you try urban decay naked Platte 3 it has just awesome colors.
saanvi recently posted…Best and healthy snacks to take to work
Oh well, Saanvi, they are not for everyone! I decided to pass on the Naked 3 Palette, and I bought the IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Matte palette with similar shades instead. I didn’t want so many shimmery shades as are in the Naked 3, but it is a super-pretty palette! Glad you’re enjoying it 🙂
That’s a really great deal. I love UD’s pencils – the best!

I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about these pencils so I’m a little skeptical of them.

Ange, the sale is still on for the Black Market set on the UD website. Not sure for how long, so act fast!
They are beautiful but just a correction from the end of your post, Urban Decay are not vegan. They have some vegan products but otherwise they are just cruelty-free.
Kimmi @ The Plastic Diaries recently posted…What I Wore – 5 Outfits for 5 Events
Thanks so much, Kimmi, for pointing that out. I think the pencil shades that don’t contain ‘carmine’ are vegan (and they don’t contain beeswax), but you are right, UD is not a vegan brand across the board. just certain products.
I love these pencils, but they always budge on me. I still use them but it can be frustrating sometimes.

Man maybe it’s just me but I haven’t been too excited by UD’s pencil sets, they feel like super predictable colors. Sadly the colors in the set don’t do anything for me

It is really nice, Chris! I think I will try pairing it with the medium blue liquid liner from Chella I got in my March ipsy bag.
While I like the pigmentation, UD liner smudges on me, no thanks to my oily lids. This is a great deal ‘tho.

Icaria recently posted…Chanel Le Vernis #559 Frenzy…
Oh well, Helene. It seems these work best with normal to dry skin.
Recently I tried a UD liner for the first time–they have the best colors, and the biggest selection, of any company out there! And usually I love their stuff. I got a deep navy color–a little more blue than the ink in this collection. It goes on SO easily and looks so beautiful! Unfortunately, it does seem to migrate a little bit on me and I usually find bits of blue in the corner of my eye later in the day 🙁 Next time I use it I’m going to try a little finely-milled loose powder under or over and see if that helps.
I’m really writing to ask two questions: First, is the UD liner really hard to remove for you? Cause it’s really tough for me–weird since it doesn’t stay in place as well as some other brands. Secondly, I only use liner to tight line, and the gel eyeliners seem to irritate my eyes–they tend to be a little teary all day, until I take my makeup off. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin or eyes, so…. does anyone else experience this?
Great questions, Kim! I emailed Brooke with your first question (just in case she doesn’t see your comment. I need to get a better comment program, but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet!). I’ll let you know once I hear back from her.
I don’t have a problem removing it from my waterline. But when I use it on my upper eyelid, it is a little hard to remove but not too bad. I use Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover which I love for my sensitive eyes. I guess I’m lucky that I don’t usually have a tearing problem from either the UD or Estee Lauder eye pencils. At what price beauty, eh?
Hi Brooke, just wondering which shades stay in place for you? I’d love to know what to try next 🙂 Thx!
