Repairing My Broken Powder Highlighter

Last Friday, I showed you the new Wet N Wild Color Icon Rainbow Highlighter Unicorn Glow that I had been waiting for but that arrived with the powder completely smashed into chunks of all sizes. I was very disappointed.

I called Wet N Wild customer service and sent them a photo of the damaged item. I asked them to replace it, and to take more care in wrapping it for shipping.

My online friend, DiEtta suggested that I try to repair it. A few years ago, I read a post about from Sheila of Painted Ladies repairing broken powder compacts, but thankfully, I hadn’t broken anything so I never got to try it. DiEtta sent along a link to a YouTube video that showed how to do it. Since it looked really easy to repair, I thought I’d give it a try. All you need is a little isopropyl alcohol and a knife or spreader.

Here’s the impromptu video I made of me repairing it. I tried editing the video, but it was beyond me 🙁

From the photos on the website, the Wet N Wild Rainbow Highlighter Unicorn Glow compact had stripes of the different colors in its initial state before it broke to bits, and even repaired it will never look like that again. Nevertheless, I think the repaired version looks pretty darn good!

What do you think? Have you repaired broken powder compacts?

  1. It’s actually not that hard to repair a broken compact, I did it at work too with an eyeshadow tester. LOL! Shame about the highlighter, did they end up giving you a replacement?

    1. Yes, the replacement is on its way. You’re right, it wasn’t hard. Unfortunately, I couldn’t recreate the striped pattern but this is good enough.

Morning Allison ☕️☕️🍩🍩🙋🏻 Great video! 👍🏼So glad that it worked. I have used this technique several times. Thanks for sharing…….when repairing a compact with several colors try and keep all colors together and not mix them when smoothing it out after adding the alcohol. Have a beautiful day. Fall 🍃🍂🍁 is coming…….🙋🏻

    1. It definitely worked, DiEtta. Thanks for encouraging me to do it. The original was striped, and though I tried moving the million chunks around, it was a Humpty Dumpty jigsaw puzzle and not worth the effort. I sort of like this look: abstract expressionism. Also, WnW is sending me a new one!

  3. I’ve done this a few times for eyeshadow and powder foundation and was surprised at how well it worked! I think your repaired compact still looks rather pretty.

    1. I agree, Kristina. Even though it doesn’t look like the striped original, it’s still usable

  4. This is a great tutorial, Allison! I have had to do this before as well!

  5. Oh man…what a bummer to receive a brand new item broken! I’m so glad you were able to fix it and I think it turned out great!

  6. Aw that sucks that it was broken! Glad you fixed it.

I fixed a broken one before, mixed it with alcohol. Not in perfect shape though but it’s good you were able to fix yours

    1. I had wanted to try this fix so I had fun trying it. Glad they’re sending a replacement though 🙂

  8. GREAT JOB with the fix! I had recently ordered an Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit from Macy’s and it came with one of the pans broken so I went on youtube and found a video like yours showing how to fix it. It may not be the prettiest job but I was able to fix it. And I am glad to know that if I ever drop and break another compact that it can be an easy fix.

    1. It’s true. It’s quite easy and like a miracle! It’s particularly great to be able to save something you really care about

  9. I’ve done this a few times and it’s surprisingly easy.

    1. It definitely was. I was surprised. I wish I could have put the pieces back together again in the separated color stripes, but at least it was salvaged

  10. Great timing for me since I found I had broken a Hard Candy blush that I really like. Now to find the alcohol and get to work.
You are so cute in the video!

    1. Thank you, Marcia! I need a new tripod for my iPhone lol so I don’t have to crouch down to say hello!

    1. Me too! And I’m happy that they’re sending a new one that will hopefully not break along the way!

  11. You did a great job salvaging what’s left of that gorgeous highlighter. I am impressed you even managed to separate the colors the way you did, I would have just probably smashed the whole thing and swirled it all together.

    1. Thank you, Anastasia. I couldn’t figure out how to recreate all the color stripes with all those odd shaped chunks but I was able to keep some of the color separate from each other. It’s a bit heavy on the blue, unfortunately, but it is still usable 🙂

  12. Aww, that’s too bad it arrived in such a state. I had a NYX highlighter that arrived smashed. I used a similar technique, and was pretty impressed with how great it looked afterwards and that it worked just as well.

    1. The only problem with mine is that I was unable to recreate the striped colors, and now it’s a bit heavy on the blue. Not sure blue on my cheeks is the best 😉 but I had fun doing it.
