Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadow: Initial Thoughts

While picking up my vitamin D prescription at CVS, I found an orphan limited edition display in the candy aisle from Revlon.

I forgot that I was dying to try one of the new Ultra HD lip gel sticks because I was entranced by the new Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows. You know I’m a sucker for cream shadows. Obviously, they are meant to compete with Maybelline Color Tattoos and at a higher price point, MAC Paint Pots and other cream shadows in pots, e.g. NARS, Bobbi Brown etc. CVS had a “spend $15 and get $5 off” coupon as well as a “buy one, get one 50% off on Revlon”, so I couldn’t resist. At CVS, the new Revlon ColorStay Creme Eye Shadows are $8.49 each and with the promotion, it made the two of them about $6.25 each plus the $5 off my total purchase. (At Ulta Beauty, they’re $7.99, and they’re probably even less at Walmart.)

I should have taken a photo of the shadow display, but I forgot. From memory, there were mostly shimmer/satins like bronze, copper, rose pink, green gold, silver, and gold, I think. Also, I think there was a matte milk chocolate and a matte dark chocolate. You can see all the shades below the post, 11 in all. I picked the rose pink #745 and green gold #735. The shades were quite enticing in the pots, and I hoped they’d be highly pigmented.

The jars look similar to Maybelline Color Tattoos but a little thicker perhaps because they have a built-in mini brush that is stored in the cap of the jar. Very cool. The brush has bristles and if you’re stuck, it could be used in a pinch. Truth be told, I forgot to try the brush out on my maiden voyage.

I made swatches with my finger on my arm first without primer. They felt very smooth. But without primer, they hardly showed up at all on my arm. They look better in the photo than in my bathroom!

With these eyeshadows, I think primer is a must. With primer, they had decent but not exceptional pigmentation.

Although these would probably make great bases, I like cream shadows for everyday wear. And that’s what I did today. I applied them over Urban Decay Anti-aging Primer and wore them around the house. I tried applying with my finger at first, but I got more color with a brush. They blend easily. They seem less than opaque to me, but they show up fairly well. In fact, the shades look deeper in the photo than they do to me in real life.

Compared to Maybelline Color Tattoos, Revlon ColorStay Creme Eyeshadows feel lighter weight, more gel-like, less stiff, at least at the start of the pot. Compared to MAC Paint Pots, NARS and Bobbi Brown potted cream shadows that feel richer and look more opaque, Revlon ColorStay feels much much lighter and more translucent. Nevertheless, I got good wear from them over primer. After blending, they dried down, stayed put and didn’t fade over many hours. Because I haven’t owned them more than a couple of days, I have no idea if they’ll dry out in the pot like the Color Tattoos can.

So this is my initial impression. I wouldn’t run out to buy these, truth be told, but they’re fun to play with.

Have you tried the new Revlon ColorStay Cream Eye Shadows yet? If so, what did you think?

  1. I noticed at work that Revlon is having a massive revamp on their products which I don’t blame them as Maybelline and L’Oreal are way ahead of Revlon in my opinion. I very rarely try Revlon as I have little luck with the brand just like CoverGirl.

    1. Revlon has had some issues at the top over the past few years, and I’m not sure if the CEO or President is still there or if there’s someone new. You can easily pass on these eyeshadows, but I’ve heard great things about their new Ultra HD gel lipstick

Morning Allison ??☕☕?? I’m sharing. These eyeshadows are so pretty. I am a matte color type girl. But that said I know my granddaughters would love these. Great gift for Valentine’s Day ?. Have a nice day. ?

    1. There are some mattes in the lineup, DiEtta, most likely the neutrals. These are not highly pigmented, but your granddaughters might like them if they like a more muted shadow. Walmart has them for $6.79 each!

  3. MonicaP says:

I purchased two as well (before my 2017 makeup no buy) and I thought they were meh. Not really pigmented, but easier to apply than the Color Tattoos. So I totally agree with your review 😀

    1. Thank you, Monica, for taking the time to weigh in on these. I was sad that they weren’t better. They look so good in the pot!

  4. LOL on the orphan intro. I’m intrigued to try these!

    1. Thanks, the poor Revlon display looked so lost among the candy. But I was somewhat underwhelmed by the eyeshadows. I wish I had bought the Ultra HD gel lipstick instead!

  5. I mostly use cream eyeshadows as a base to make the powder ones really pop. I think these would get that job done 🙂 Revlon is not that popular here in Finland but I’ll definitely check these out if I run into them.

    1. I will try these as a base soon, but with my dry lids, I’m a big cream shadow fan. I didn’t realize that you are in Finland. How wonderful! Revlon has a spotty presence worldwide, but I hope you do find them. Revlon’s new Ultra HD gel lipstick has been getting rave reviews here so keep an eye out for that one!

  6. I love cream shadows, and I am intrigued by your description. I like the less opaque finish for a light wash of color, and will be interested to see if they have a tendency to dry out the way that the Maybelline’s can.

    1. If you like less opaque cream shadows, these would be perfect for you. Over primer, they are long lasting and oh so easy to blend. They have a very different consistency from Color Tattoos so I’m hoping they won’t dry out in the pot.

  7. They colours look really great, but they do seem pretty sheer. That’s a bummer.

    1. Yes, bummer, but I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t tried ’em 😉

  8. I had some of the older versions of these but I prefer the L’Oreal ones.

    1. I haven’t seen L’Oreal creams! These are meh. I prefer my NARS, Bobbi Brown and MAC Paint Pots coz they’re opaque but certainly more $$$

  9. Oh dear. One can not just pass by the orphan revlon display without giving one or two things a new home!!! 🙂 I was curious about these. I don’t generally like cream or liquid shadows but I like how you wore hen and that they are blendable. I’ll keep my eyes open next time I stop in CVS near me!!

    1. I think you can skip these, Judy. They’re definitely on the translucent side, and I think a better bet for dry lids like mine especially if you’re not a big fan of cream shadows

  10. I’m attempting another no buy so I’ll have to ignore the orphans. My maybelline and l’oreal ones have mostly dried out but then again so have my Chanel ones. Better to buy a less expensive version now that everyone has them.

    1. I was on a no buy also, but then “cream”. I bought cream shadows from NARS and Bobbi Brown last February, and they are both opaque and still creamy in their pots. They were expensive, but so far they’re going strong and not getting dry, thankfully, coz I don’t usually pay that much for single shadows.

  11. All of the reviews I’ve seen on these say that the colours are pretty but they are sheer and some say they don’t wear well. I think that wear is very YMMV but oddly, I still want to try these. I should pick up a couple from Ulta and see what I see.

    1. They are sheerer than I would wish, unfortunately. But wearing them with primer, they last very well for me on my dry eyelids. I wish I had bought a matte shade too. LMK what you think if you take the plunge

  12. These are so sheer.

  13. I bought most of them. Cuz I’m a sucker for these type of things. And I haven’t remembered to try them yet, but what I’/ve read in other reviews is that using the applicator that comes with it makes it so much more pigmented. I need to try mine

    1. Hope you’ll post about your experiences with them, Shelley. I didn’t use their stiff brush but used my own brush. I would describe them as OK, still too translucent for me. I was hoping for some good pigmentation. I wish I had bought one of the matte shades to try out.

  14. These little pots are adorable! Great colors!

    1. The Revlon ColorStay Creme Shadows are the cutest. I wish they were a little more pigmented and opaque on my skin, but they’re still pretty and so easy to blend.

  15. The pinkish color looks pretty on your lids. The color pay-off I feel should have been better with the primer underneath.

    1. I’m really disappointed in the pigmentation. If I could find the receipt, I would bring them back. I hope I can find it!

I was at first a little wary of trying a cream eye shadow but man, or man, the Revlon Colorstay cream eye shadow blew me away. I love the feel of it, the easiness of application and the staying power. I was initially leary of using a cream shadow at my age (63) but no longer. It’s my favorite new product now. Thanks.

    1. Diane, I am a biiiiiiiiig fan of cream eye shadow. I have very dry eyelids, and I find cream shadows to be perfect for my dry skin. I apply them on top of primer and they last very well. So far, I have only tried those two shades from Revlon that I reviewed. Like you, I loved the ease of application, ease of blending, and they lasted with no creasing till I removed them. The pink was a success for me, I’d say, but I was a bit disappointed in the pigmentation of the greenish-grey shade. Which shades did you try? I’ve used many of the Maybelline Color Tattoos, and some shades are terrific while others are a little dry. I’ve also tried cream shadows from NARS and Bobbi Brown. So far, my favorite is the MAC Paint Pots. They’re more expensive ($22) but they are amazing, so creamy and so blendable. I think it’s worth it to keep an eye out for sales (join MACs online shopper program) because they have 20 or 25% off sales every now and then. I’m ticked off that I missed the beauty sale at Macy’s a couple of weeks ago because everything was 25% off. I think you’d like them too.

  17. Diane Skolnique says:

    Love this product!

  18. I love the look of that pink, it’s gorgeous on you! x

    1. Thank you, Becca. Wish it were a bit more pigmented but I still agree that it’s a pretty shade for spring!
