Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Gel Liner

For some reason, I haven’t been using gel liners for a long time. But I decided I needed to go back to a gel liner to see if I could get a smoother line on my upper lid and see if it would be easier for me to make a good looking wing. Also, I wanted to see if a gel wing would be longer lasting on the looser skin around my downturned eyes.

I didn’t want to spend a lot so I picked up Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Gel Liner for $5.99 at Ulta.

The Rimmel Gel Liner is very black, also creamy and smooth. It comes with a small brush. I have used the brush, and it definitely works. However, I find a slant tip brush easier to use.

It was easy to apply the gel liner to my eyelid. The liner dried quickly and was very long-lasting. It didn’t go anywhere for hours. Although waterproof, it was easy to remove with regular eye makeup remover.

The wing, however, was not as long-lasting (as the liner on my lid) in spite of being waterproof (I always assume that waterproof means long-lasting but maybe it just means waterproof). After a few hours, I noticed the wing part had disappeared. It could be my skin.

Also, I tried the gel on my upper waterline, and I didn’t have much luck with it. I’ll stick with the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil for that job. But as a regular eyeliner, Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Gel Liner was easy to apply, and it did the job.

I’d love to hear anyone else’s experiences with the Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Gel Liner. If you used it, please weigh in and let me know if your wing lasted!

ADDENDUM: Because I wear a lot of eye cream to soften the appearance of my crow’s feet, I had a brainstorm that maybe I should apply eye primer where my wing would be. I tried it and so far, so good.

  1. Oddly enough, I’ve been using a gel eye liner more than pencil. I re-purchased the Loreal Infalible gel liner and it glides on beautifully.

Haven’t tried the Rimmel, but will add it to that growing list of products to try 🙂

    1. I haven’t tried the L’Oreal Infallible Gel Liner. Truth be told, price guided me on this purchase, lol! I’ll add it to my growing list 😉

  2. LOVE me some gel liners. I’m not as steady with a brush, though, but I think I should try it. 🙂

    1. With a slant tip brush, I think it’s quite easy to apply and I’m sure you’re more skilled than I am and would have no trouble. 😉

  3. I have not tried this product before, but I absolutely LOVE the scaneleyes kohl liner pencil from Rimmel! Those are amazing!

    1. That’s great to know, Maria! How do the Rimmel Kohl Liner Pencils work on the waterline, meaning do they come off on the bottom waterline? I’m using the fabulous Lancome Drama Liqui-Pencil that doesn’t come off but it’s expensive. Always looking for a no-budge drugstore alternative!

      1. I use them mostly on the waterline and the pigmentation is fabulous – it can be hard to get some liners to show up in the waterline at all – but these do very well. And they last very well there too.

        1. Thanks for letting me know, Maria. I’ll definitely give them a try when my Lancome pencil is used up. I had high hopes for L’Oreal Infallible pencils that are supposed to stay put, but the black pencil on my upper waterline came off onto the lower and it drives me crazy!

  4. If the wing isn’t long-lasting that is a deal breaker for me. Once I am at work, I seldom have time to take a break so I need my eyeliner to be pretty bullet proof to get me through a really long day on campus.

    1. I know what you mean. Disappearing wings should be a no-go! I need to try it again since I’ve only worn a wing with the gel twice. On my lid, there’s no problem. Because I am older, the skin on the outer corner of my eye isn’t firm but kinda droopy. Frankly, at my age, I should give up on winged liner but it helps my downturned eyes look more lively and upturned. I probably should buy a more expensive brand but I’m afraid the same thing will happen.

      1. Lorraine ER says:

The L’oreal gel liner that comes in the pot with the brush is the longest-lasting one I’ve found at the drugstore. It’s tough- lasts through an entire day on my oily lids, through sweat and humidity and yawning without a flake, smudge or crack to be seen. The wing part stays just as dark and crisp as when first applied too.
I have been looking for a cruelty-free alternative at the same price or less in drugstores and haven’t found anything that holds up nearly as well. So far I’ve tried Kiss, maybelline and L.A girl and no luck.

        1. I agree with you, Lorraine! I wrote about the L’Oreal Gel Liner just a few weeks after the Rommel review 😉 Finding a cruelty-free GEL liner is tough. I have used the ColourPop gel liner for $5 or $6 and they go on easily but they don’t last quite as long. Milani’s Gel liners are quite good. Have you tried Milani or ColourPop gels? But I still love L’Oreal the best.

  5. Yuck, it sucks that it didn’t last. I have hooded eyes so I need transfer proof and long wearing products.

    1. The liner was rock solid on my eyelid but the wing didn’t stay “crisp” looking. I wear a lot of eye cream around the outer corner of my eyes to soften my crow’s feet so the liner kind of melted in the eye cream. I am going to put eye primer out there on top of the eye cream and see if that helps the gel liner wing last. Worth a try, I think! But can you recommend a transfer proof gel eyeliner that’s not too expensive?

  6. I may try this. Honestly, I’m so gne on my L’Oreal Infallible gel liner for tight lining and just regular lining, that I hesitate to try anything else. lol

    1. If L’Oreal Infallible Gel Liner is working for you, stick with it. Heck, you and another girl recommended the L’Oreal so I may give that one a go next sale at CVS or Ulta!

  7. I’ve never tried lining the upper waterline with gel…. that’s an interesting idea!

    1. I can’t say that I was successful trying the Rimmel Gel Liner on my waterline. It didn’t budge on my lid but it didn’t “catch” on the waterline. Let me know if you have better luck doing it!

  8. ohhhhh can’t have that wing running off. It’s a statement look!
Brooke @ Blushing Noir recently posted…Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara Swatches & ReviewMy Profile

    1. True, Brooke! I’m not giving up yet. I wear a lot of eye cream out there to soften my crow’s feet so any liner has a tough time. I’m going to try extending my eye primer in that area and try again!

  9. I don’t do a wing very often. I know it’s popular but I think it makes me look like I’m trying too hard. Although I love a gel liner, I’m not so sure that price makes a big difference.
MarciaF recently posted…Brow and lash love for 2015My Profile

    1. Good to know. I just don’t want to spend a lot on a gel liner. With my downturned eyes, the wing helps me look less “sad”. But I know what you mean about “trying too hard”. But I think I’ll try extending my primer out where the wing would be and see if that helps.

  11. Bummer that the wing did not last. I have lids like black holes – they absorb/consume everything – eyeliner, concealer, eyeshadow – and don’t let anything out, so this isn’t for me.

    1. I need to play with it some more. It was rock solid on my lids but I wear a lot of moisturizer around my outer eye. I’ll issue a follow up! Maybe I need to bring my primer out a little more where the wing is

  12. you know, I think I might have bought this awhile ago when I was looking for new liners…..but haven’t used it yet. Sounds like it’s worth it!!! I’m so glad there are good drugstore gel liners now.

Bummer that it didn’t stay very well! The L’Oreal one is fantastic!

    1. I’m going to try putting some eye primer where the wing is over my eye cream and see if that’ll work. If not, L’Oreal it will be!

  14. No deal if it fails the wing test! I do like the price and I do love gel liners but I need that girl to last all day!

    1. It would probably be fine for you, Brigitte! I wear a lot of eye cream to soften my crow’s feet and to firm my looser skin so I’m thinking I need to try applying primer beyond my outer corner of my eye and see if that helps.

  15. This sounds like a pretty great option. I’ve been having trouble finding a good liquid liner that isn’t overly expensive and thought I might start testing more gels. I’ll have to remember this!

Babi recently posted…M POLISH Cayuga, Pekin, Stamping and Nail Art!My Profile

    1. It didn’t smudge, Babi, but it disappeared. Because I’m older, I wear a lot of eye cream so today I put primer over the eye cream and my wing is doing much, much better. I probably should go back and alter my review!

  18. I love gel eyeliner, but sadly I tried this and it didn’t last very long :/ Damn my oily lids

    1. It’s a very nice gel liner. Using eye primer helps the wing stay on better for me.

  22. I just picked up the L’Oreal Infallible Gel Liner last weekend. I usually do my wing with liquid liner or pen liner. You review is helpful, I think I’d skip on this one. I had the Scandaleyes waterproof kohl kajal pencil and I like it.

    1. You’re the third woman to mention the L’Oreal gel liner so that’s on my list for next. I wear a lot of eye cream to soften my crow’s feet so I tried putting primer over the area where the wing goes and it helped a lot. I probably should’ve done that right off the bat 😉

  23. Lorraine says:

I have trouble getting wings to last too, between oily skin and the shape of my eyes.
The best gel liner I’ve found is the Loreal, I think it’s called infallible lacquer and the brush it comes with works great too. I put primer all around my eye where I’ll have liner or shadow for extra stating power then line away with this stuff and my wings and liner stay allllll day. If I don’t remove before bed it’ll still be looking good when I get up!

    1. Thank you, Lorraine, for taking the time to tell me of your experience with gel liner and wings! I really appreciate it. You are the third woman to tell me about the L’Oreal Infallible Gel Liner so I plan to pick it up next trip to Ulta or next time I get some extra bucks at CVS. Using primer on top of my eye cream has helped the wing stay on with the Rimmel, but I’d rather have something that works the first time 🙂

  24. Natalie Brown says:

I do think “durable” when I read waterproof too. lol Good to know that applying the primer helped it to stay. I haven’t used any gel liners. Only because I’m such a klutz when applying eye liner that I stick to a pencil. Thanks for the fun review!

    1. I mostly use pencils, but the Eyeko Fat Liquid Liner that I just got in my welcome Birchbox is amazeballs, as they say. Even I can do it, so maybe it’s worth a try, Natalie 😉
