Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50

I can never have enough sunscreens, and I recently received a new sunscreen made with physical sunblock and a high percentage of natural and organic ingredients. Since I’m piling on the sunscreen these days, and chemicals can enter the bloodstream through the skin, I like to choose natural and organic ingredients when I can.

The sunscreen that I just tried has a looooooooong name: Safe Harbor Natural Suncare Sensitive Lotion with Natural Anti-aging Complex SPF 50, a moisturizing sunscreen lotion, an anti-aging treatment rich in age-defying antioxidants. Actually, the name is the part up to the first comma, the rest are descriptors on the front of the tube.

The sunscreen arrived with a very informative brochure about Safe Harbor Natural Suncare. Here’s some of what it said:

“Safe Harbor is an advanced range of sun care produces that are made with the greatest percentage of natural ingredients possible. The Safe Harbor collection has at its heart mineral based zinc oxide, providing maximum, broad-spectrum protection against harmful skin-aging UVA and UVB rays”.

In addition, Safe Harbor products are made with natural ingredients including anti-oxidant red algae, green tea, sea buckthorn, jojoba, chamomile and more.

Safe Harbor products:

  • don’t contain chemical fillers
  • contain certified organic ingredients
  • are hypoallergenic
  • are cruelty-free
  • are paraben free
  • are rich in antioxidants and other natural ingredients.

There are four sunscreen products in the collection:

  • Sensitive Lotion SPF 50
  • Sensitive Lotion SPF 30
  • Face and Neck Cream SPF 40
  • Baby and Kids SPF 50.

Because I was looking for a higher SPF sunscreen, I chose Sensitive Lotion SPF 50. It was a couple of weeks or so since I ordered it, and I forgot the particulars. When I saw “natural anti-aging complex” on the tube, I thought it was a face sunscreen and didn’t hesitate one second before I slathered it, and I mean slathered it, on my face. I had been outside gardening (that’s why I’m sweating) wearing an SPF 30, and I was heading back outdoors to go jogging, so I thought why not go for a higher SPF? Haha, joke’s on me. It’s primarily a body sunscreen.  😳

me-white-sunblock-face

The primary active ingredients are the natural mineral physical sunscreen ingredients titanium dioxide (10.4%) and zinc oxide (4.0%). I ended up with a very white face, lol!

Next, I applied it on my arms, hands and legs. It’s a thickish white cream (rather than a “lotion”). A little goes a long way. It goes on white and requires quite a bit of rubbing in, but once it’s on I definitely felt very protected.

Also, I must mention that it has a noticeable but very pleasant floral scent that goes away after the cream is absorbed. If you can’t handle fragrance, this isn’t for you.

Although you should reapply sunscreen every couple of hours and after you’ve been in the water, Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion SPF 50 felt like it was still on my skin hours later and after going in the water. This sunscreen is a bit heavy but it definitely lasts, and it definitely protected me from the sun! After being in the sun for hours, I had no tan at all which is fine with me. I’ll bet the version for Baby and Kids is terrific, too.

Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion SPF 50 comes in a flexible plastic tube, contains 4 fl. oz., and it’s made in the U.S. You can learn more about it and the other sunscreens in the collection on the Safe Harbor website. I was surprised to discover that Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion SPF 50 is sold exclusively at Walmart for $7.98. Walmart definitely is upping its game as this (and another body care product I recently reviewed from a different brand) is a high quality, better-for-you product.

I was glad to add Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion to my sun care arsenal. Do you have a favorite sunscreen?

Two totally different topics: #1 The Nordstrom Anniversary sale starts soon! I believe that the sale starts for Nordies cardholders on July 9. #2 My StriVectin Repair & Protect Moisturizer SPF 30 GIVEAWAY is still open. This moisturizer is priced at $89, so this is a great chance to get to try it for free! Enter here.

    1. It does. It is a heavy duty, better-for-you sunscreen and affordable too 🙂

  2. I’m always looking for more natural SPF options. They do tend to be more white, but I like knowing they are good for my body!

    1. And that’s really the crux of the matter with the Safe Harbor SPF 50. It does an incredible job staying on my skin and I definitely prefer their mineral approach, but it is a bit on the heavy side.

  3. I don’t have a single favorite sunscreen, but I remember my very first sunscreen that stood out from the crowd – La Roche-Posay Anthelios that I bought uhh.. a decade ago? My goodness, I’m getting old! These days I mostly use Korean sunscreens, because they perfected the formula to make it runny enough to easily spread the product over the skin without leaving white streaks everywhere.

    1. La Roche-Posay still is a very good sunscreen brand, but unfortunately, they don’t have a physical sunscreen in their products. I’m definitely curious about the Korean sunscreens!

  4. I have never heard of this brand, but I’m always on the hunt for more natural sunscreens. I have issues with my skin breaking out,etc when I use most. Thanks for posting about this one!

    1. They have a Face and Neck sunscreen, but I haven’t tried it yet. Safe Harbor Sensitive Lotion SPF 50 is a very good, heavy duty sunscreen for the body which is good for me because I spend a lot of time outdoors.

  5. Thanks for the intro to this brand! I am always on the hunt for natural and sensitive sunscreens! 🙂

      1. That’s good to know, thanks! 🙂 Definitely need sunscreen for my little all the time. He gets really red when it’s hot out. 🙁

  7. This sounds really great, I love that there are less fillers in it. I am interested in trying this and the face option and I’ll keep my eye out next time I’m at Walmart!

  10. I would love to use this on my daughter since she has such sensitive skin and I like to stick with natural ingredients on her. I also just love the 50 SPF this has! Perfect!

    1. I think Safe Harbor would be since it’s mineral-based and has a high SPF.

  12. This sounds like a good sunscreen for those with sensitive skin. I do worry about the white tint though. Thanks for the honest thoughts! 🙂

    1. I think it’s great for the beach or for spending long hours outside for sports etc. I wonder if the lower spf would absorb faster/more completely. But I must say this does a great job staying on for the long haul.

  13. This sounds like the sunscreen I have been looking for!

    1. The line of 4 products is definitely worth looking into, Carleen. Natural, mineral sunscreen with a variety of SPFs, affordable and easy to get. Not bad!

  14. I like finding safe sunscreens I like scents in products so that won’t bother me!

    1. This is actually a lovely scent. It starts out strong but the dry down is really nice!

  15. Great that you feel protected while its on, I’ve used some products in the past where I’ve literally felt like the SPF wasnt working! I do prefer clear formulas for my own skin though xxx
WhatLauraLoves recently posted…Pocket Sized Festival Essential From FemfreshMy Profile

    1. This is a heavy one, Laura, because it’s a mineral sunscreen with SPF 50. Definitely not for those who prefer a lightweight sunscreen.

  16. Too funny that you slathered it all over your face, but at least you were protected! lol I’m constantly on the hunt or organic/all natural sunscreens. Currently, Supergoop is my go-to brand, but I will definitely write this one down for future reference!
Julie recently posted…Beauty Empties (July 2015)My Profile

    1. That was so silly of me not to read the directions first! I was in a hurry to go out to jog and with the “anti-aging” ingredients it sounded like a face sunscreen. I forgot what I ordered, lol. I looked so funny!

  17. I was going to try this brand but when I asked if it was fragranced they didn’t answer me. I’m glad now I skipped it even though it sounds like a great safe line.
MarciaF recently posted…Makeup Wars with Keune Hair Care products – Keratin Smoothing LineMy Profile

    1. You made the right decision, Marcia, if you’re sensitive to fragrances. This is highly fragranced. Luckily, I happen to like the scent

  18. I have two favorite body sunscreen, one is the Coppertone SPF 30 and Banana Boat but I’ve also seen lotion with SPF 70+ by Neutrogena . But Safe Harbor sounds like a good brand to try out 🙂 xx
sharon recently posted…Drugstore Madness Wednesday|Cream Blush by Joe FreshMy Profile

    1. I’ve used the Neutrogena spf 70 and it’s a good one too, but I believe it’s a chemical sunscreen. I’ve been trying more to avoid slathering chemical sunscreens all over my body if I can help it since they get absorbed into the bloodstream.

  19. I generally like spray on sunscreens for the body and I don’t mind chemical sunscreens for my face!
Mai recently posted…SWATCHES & REVIEW: Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows in Charmed and DaydreamerMy Profile

    1. I like spray-on sunscreens too because they’re so lightweight, but I have started to think more about using physical rather than chemical sunscreens. Frankly, I use both. This one definitely seems to provide more protection than my spray-on chemical based spf 50 so it may be especially good for days when I’m spending a lot of time outdoors.

  20. I don’t normally have sensitive skin, but as I’ve aged I am very sensitive to the sun so this sounds great!

  25. It looks good for a drugstore brand. I am still very biased with MyChelle because I feel it doesn’t give as much of a white curtain effect on the skin but this one for that price, is a great pick too Allison 🙂
NORAH recently posted…Fitness Must Haves This Summer Sponsored By PoiseMy Profile

    1. I agree with you, Norah. MyChelle remains my favorite for that very reason. However, my 3 MyChelle sunscreens are spf 28 and spf 30, and I wanted a heavy-duty spf 50 for when I’m outside for a long period of time.

  26. I would have done the same thing after reading as well and put it on my face. After having it on your face did you notice any reaction to the product. Some sunscreens cause my face to break out. This sounds like something I would like.
Honeygirlk recently posted…Get Beautiful and Radiant Skin With NeoCell Beauty BurstsMy Profile

    1. No reaction at all, Honey, but it is very thick and clearly not meant for the face. Plus I put on waaaaaaay too much. A little of this goes a long way, but it is a heavy-duty sunscreen

  27. I hadn’t heard of this brand, but it sounds like a great option. I like that they offer higher SPFs too. Good on Walmart for carrying it.

    1. Yes, Safe Harbor is a new brand to me too. I’ve recently reviewed a couple of upmarket but affordable brands that are sold exclusively at Walmart. Impressive.

  28. I would be curious about trying a face option. I like that this one has an spf of 50, I’m trying not to use anything below that.

    Tee recently posted…Cheap OrganizingMy Profile

    1. The Safe Harbor SPF 50 is a very heavy duty one, Tee. If you’ve just started using sunscreen, I would recommend MyChelle sold at Whole Foods because it’s still a physical sunscreen but much lighter weight (though more expensive).
