Scentbird SOTM: SKYLAR Vanilla Sky Perfume

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

Since I no longer receive a new scent from the subscription service, Scentbird, every month, I guess instead of the Scent of the Month, it’s my Scent of the Quarter. I enjoy Scentbird’s subscription service, but there just aren’t 12 scents that I could choose from their offerings in a year’s time. So quite a while ago, I switched to four times a year or every three months. This quarter I chose SKYLAR Vanilla Sky.

Scentbird carries a lot of designer and celebrity fragrances, but lately they are getting more indie brands. They are also stocking quite a few “clean” fragrances. SKYLAR is a clean beauty brand. Here’s what they have to say about their brand and products:

The Skylar Standard

We don’t hide harmful ingredients under the word fragrance—everything is listed on our website. We go above and beyond the strictest global regulatory standards to ensure your skin’s safety. Our ingredient policy was developed with a toxicologist to intentionally omit harmful ingredients, including the 36 worst offenders of asthma and allergies.

Our formulas are… What you will never find in our formulas:
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Safe for sensitive skin
  • Vegan
  • Cruelty-free
  • Formulated above EU clean standards
  • Tested in third-party labs
  • Eau de Parfums
  • 36 fragrance allergens
  • Endangered plant species
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Artificial dyes
  • Commonly known toxins and CMR’s
  • Animal notes & byproducts
  • Skin sensitizers (BHT, BHA, sulfates, etc.)
  • 1,300+ questionable ingredients

To be honest, I didn’t choose a fragrance from SKYLAR because of their clean beauty standard. I am fortunate that I am not sensitive to fragrance additives or ingredients, but it’s nice to know that they don’t have toxins in their scents. And if you or a fragrance lover that you know is allergic or sensitive to ingredients sometimes found in traditional perfumes and fragrances, check out SKYLAR.

One thing that I’m confused about is that SKYLAR above says “Our formulas are eau de parfums”. My sample from Scentbird says “eau de toilette” as do the Vanilla Sky rollerball and bottle. Odd. EDTs have less perfume oil in them than EDPs, and are therefore less costly.

SKYLAR Vanilla Sky

What Does It Smell Like?

I selected SKYLAR Vanilla Sky because I sometimes like vanilla fragrances. Guerlain’s Shalimar with its key vanilla note was my favorite in high school and beyond.

SKYLAR Vanilla Sky is seriously VANILLA!!! Although it has many of secondary notes that I traditionally love, the vanilla is super strong. In fact, for me, it’s a little too strong. It’s a gourmand, and it’s very food-like. I might call it “eau de bakery”.

Here are the main accords:

  • vanilla
  • coffee
  • caramel
  • sweet
  • woody
  • powdery
  • warm spicy
  • cinnamon
  • balsamic
  • lactonic.

The notes also contain lots of my faves:

  • Top Notes: cappuccino, sweet orange and bergamot
  • Middle Notes: vanilla, cinnamon and Spanish jasmine
  • Base Notes: caramel, sandalwood, cedar, and amber

I love powdery, warm spicy, cinnamon, and balsamic accords, and amber fragrances are among my very favorites.  But to me, the vanilla and maybe the caramel overwhelm everything else.

Here’s how SKYLAR describes their scent Vanilla Sky that launched in 2020:

Add elements of warmth and comfort to your days with Vanilla Sky. A scent created to envelop your senses and enrich your heart and soul. Vanilla Sky is a decadent gourmand fragrance with rich warm vanilla notes and hints of cappuccino using the breakthrough ‘Smell The Taste’ technology. This technology translates the true taste of cappuccino to our sense of smell and creates meaningful, emotional connections to the fragrance. – SKYLAR

Lastingness and Projection

To me, it’s a very strong scent, but the website Fragrantica describe its lastingness as “moderate” and its sillage (projection) as “intimate” or “moderate”. Huh? Maybe it’s me.

Over the past couple of years, fragrances haven’t lasted long enough on me. But SKYLAR Vanilla Sky is very long lasting on me, lol. Go figure.

Who Is Vanilla Sky For?

Vanilla Sky is described as a unisex scent. Frankly, anyone who likes it can wear it. But the members of Fragrantica who rate the fragrances they try overwhelmingly described it as “feminine” or “more feminine”.

I would say that SKYLAR Vanilla Sky is for anyone who is a true lover of vanilla, gourmand fragrances. Vanilla and sweet are the watchwords with this scent.

Cost and Size

Wouldn’t you know, Scentbird raised their price by a dollar this month to $15.95 for a one month supply that comes in a glass purse spray. I’m not sure I will finish this one up. I tried layering it with Hermes L’ambre des Merveilles, an amber scent that I had hoped would tone down Vanilla Sky. But instead, L’ambre des Merveilles disappeared but Vanilla Sky is still going strong. I’ve been wearing it for a couple of hours so far today, and in the dry down, I can smell the coffee/cappuccino notes. I like those more than the vanilla.

SKYLAR Vanilla Sky comes in a travel sized 10 ml/0.33 fl. oz. rollerball for $29 and in a spray bottle. You can buy the rollerball on Amazon,  at Sephora and on the SKYLAR website. The bottle contains 1.7 fl. oz./50 ml and is priced at $85. It’s sold on the SKYLAR website, at Nordstrom and Sephora. For those who really love the scent, there’s an 8 oz. Vanilla Sky candle to scent your home for $45.

SKYLAR, an American company that manufactures their scents in the U.S., makes a variety of fragrances, and the five scents are available to try in a Discovery Set for $25. They also have Scent Club where you can receive a new SKYLAR fragrance in a purse spray every month for $20. Both would be nice gifts for scent lovers who need to wear clean beauty, non-toxic fragrances.

Are vanilla fragrances your thing?

  6. Tressa says:

I’ve tried most of Skylar’s scents and Vanilla Sky is a lovely fall/winter scent to wear. This was actually one of the first perfumes I have tried that had vanilla as the main note and that wasn’t cloying. It smells like a true vanilla. Since having kids my intense sense of smell did not go back to normal leaving me very sensitive to smells and very prone to headaches and/or sneezing fits. Skylar’s perfumes do not bother me at all and I would definitely recommend trying their perfumes for anyone who is sensitive or wanting to try cleaner fragrances.

    1. Thank you, Tressa, for weighing in about Skylar’s Vanilla Sky. I put it aside to be picked up again in the fall. Because it is a natural fragrance, a number of people who are typically sensitive to perfume have told me they can wear Skylar with no problem. Win-win!
