Sephora Play: August 2017, the Misnamed “Makeup Geek”

I got my Sephora Play bag this month, August, on the early side (whereas Ipsy is decidedly late). But when I took it out of the box, I was a little surprised that the name on the bag for this month is Makeup Geek, even though the theme is The Innovators.

Since there’s a well known indie makeup brand called Makeup Geek, Sephora should have known better than to infringe on their trademark. While there may not be legal repercussions, it just seemed strange. Either Sephora doesn’t know about Makeup Geek, which makes me think they’re uninformed about beauty, or they just don’t care. Not cool.

OK, enough with the scolding. What about the bag?

My bag contained:

  • Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick, shade Shell: travel size stick:  I almost bought this last year, but I couldn’t find a good color match so I bought MUFE Ultra HD Foundation instead, and I’m glad I did. MUFE Ultra HD is my favorite foundation in both liquid and stick form. Nevertheless, I was glad to get to try out the Hourglass version. The shade, Shell, looked like it was going to be a decent match for my skin in summer. The shade isn’t bad, but it’s too yellow for me. The coverage is not nearly as good as MUFE. I’d describe it as medium coverage at best. I’ve used it a couple of times so far, and though it’s wonderfully lightweight for summer, my skin imperfections show through clearly. I tried putting on two coats, not easy with a stick, but that still didn’t do the trick. I guess it’s not for me, but I’m glad I got it try it out, and it’s good to keep in my purse MU bag to use in a pinch.

  • Clinique HIM Dual-Ended High Impact Mascara & Lash Building Primer: travel size: I have never used a lash primer and mascara combo before, so this was fun to try. I love the handy two-in-one aspect of it. I used the mascara on its own, and it was a little skimpy. I used the two together and got better results. I’m not a huge fan of a two step process, but I’ll enjoy experimenting with this some more.

  • Beauty Blender Micro Mini: I’m thrilled to get this. I’ll use it a lot for applying concealer under my eyes or blending eyeshadow.

  • My Burberry Black eau de parfum: sample spray: With “Black” in the name, I thought this scent might work for me. And with notes of jasmine, candied rose and amber, it had two notes that I do well with: rose and amber though I’m not a fan of jasmine. My Burberry Black is a very pretty fragrance that almost but not quite works with my body chemistry. It has the depth that I look for in a fragrance, but it’s too sweet for me like so many contemporary fragrances.

In spite of the mishap with the name on the bag, I think this month’s bag was a good one. I was most excited about the Beauty Blender micro mini, the Clinique dual mascara/primer and the Hourglass Foundation Stick. It fulfilled the mission of providing beauty products, most of which, I would like to try and experiment with. For $10 delivered, I say it was worth it.

What did you think about your Sephora Play bag this month? Did you have any thoughts about the Makeup Geek name on the bag?

  1. I agree that it’s a little ignorant that they used the name. That said, this is one of the best Sephora Play! bag that I’ve seen. I do love the little mini sponges, mine is from Real Technique and I use mine every day.

    1. I have the RT mini sponges too, and I love them. Curious to see how the BB version compares. It was a good bag this month: the Hourglass Foundation Stick & the dual-ended Clinique Mascara along with the mini blender were the stars for me when I opened the bag. But the Korres serum is turning out to be fabulous too

  2. I love that HOURGLASS mini! I am obsessed with that foundation! That tiny Beautyblender is adorable, and so useful for travel!

    1. I think I remember reading your review of the Hourglass foundation stick, and I headed to Sephora to try it. Unfortunately, their shades don’t suit me as well as MUFE does and I need more coverage than this gives, but I just love the lightweight feel and I’m happy to have it to keep in my purse makeup bag.

This bag (even though they did infringe on Makeup Geeks name……I agree slap on the wrist) makes me rethink subscribing again.

    1. Yes, this was a good bag: the Hourglass foundation stick, the Clinique dual-ended mascara, the BB mini really got my attention. And I’m ending up loving the Korres Golden Krocus Serum – it’s a wonderful surprise!

This is the first time that I received exactly the same products as you, normally one or two are different, that being said I liked the contents.I’m glad I got to try the Hourglass stick, like you it’s a bit too yellow for me but it’s got a nice feel to it.I love the mini blenders and am happy to say I’m building a little stash of them 🙂 . I really liked the Burberry scent but I love the sweet scents.I’ll have to see about the hair product and I haven’t tried the mascara since I have so many I love on hand I’m not gonna reach for a 2 step unless you had raved about it.Oh and my newest love in mascara is the MAC Upward Lash! Thanks for that review,it works GREAT!You have a great weekend Allison!!! xo

    1. That is a coincidence that we got the exact same bag, but it was definitely a really good one this month. I was thrilled to see the Hourglass Foundation Stick, the Clinique dual-ended mascara & primer and the BB mini. I am loving the Korres Gold Krocus Serum – it’s so lovely on my skin. And I do use the Burberry fragrance though it doesn’t suit me well enough to buy it (thank goodness lol). I’m so glad you like the MAC Upward Lash. I think it’s a stellar mascara. In fact, I am going to order one today with my Ulta 20% off coupon. Enjoy your weekend too, Laura! Always a pleasure to hear from you xo

  5. I dropped this sub and I’m not sorry. I love the mini BB sponge but I have it already luckily. The foundation would never match me and the rest don’t appeal.

    1. Isn’t it wonderful when you cancel something, and you really feel good about it? I’ll get there one of these days 😉

  6. I adore the Hourglass Vanish stick foundation so I was happy to get the travel size. I was hoping that the fragrance sample would be the KVD Saint some people received. Alas. I guess I’m too old to qualify for the “cool” stuff.

What was Sephora thinking, printing that bag as they did?

    1. I remember that you love the Hourglass stick. I wish the shades and formula worked better for me, but I’m happy to have this to put in my beach bag coz I still can use it. I sniffed Saint and Sinner at Sephora this week. Saint is more your kind of scent. I was hoping Sinner would work for me, but turns out not so much

  7. totally with you on the name. I would have loved to have gotten the Hourglass stick…I was totally unenamaored with the contents of mine.

  9. I’d be surprised if they have never heard of Makeup Geek! I have always wanted a micro mini, and too bad the foundation stick didn’t work for you. I really liked mine. 🙂

    1. I’m glad I got the Hourglass stick, but it’s just not the right shade and doesn’t give me enough coverage. I have dark spots that MUFE does a better job covering.

  10. I’ve liked all the Alterna hair products I’ve ever tried. I think for that alone I would have been happy with this parcel.

    1. Alterna makes good stuff, but I don’t need anything volumizing so it’s not a win for me. I’ll give it away. Wish you were closer, I’d hand it right to you!

  11. I’m irritated on behalf of Makeup Geek over that bag.

  12. Yea, a bit odd to use that name on the bag, but still it’s a great collection of samples. I’d be thrilled with the mini beautyblender!

    1. I was quite pleased with the bag this month. Ripping off the MUG name was weird especially since the month’s theme was The Innovators, and they could’ve used some other line of the bag.

  13. Woah, I totally agree about the use of “Makeup Geek” on the bag. How can they not know about that brand, it’s indie, but is the go-to brand for many huge makeup enthusiasts and is all over IG. Ugh, well anyway good to hear that the Hourglass stick wasn’t as good as the MUFE. I adore the MUFE one, and always wanted to try Hourglass, but I’ll save my money!

    1. Definitely a strange move from Sephora. And since the theme of the month is The Innovators, I don’t know why they even needed to use MUG on the bag! Hourglass Foundation Stick is a nice foundation, but if you love MUFE like I do, there’s no reason to switch IMHO. MUFE has more shades, and I think the coverage is better. The Hourglass stick has a nice lightweight feel to it. I was glad that it was in my bag so I had a chance to try it out with a good size sample and really get to decide if it’s something I needed or something I could pass on. Thanks Sephora for that!

  14. Boo on the name- MUG has been around long enough for someone to know they should re-think the name. That said, the contents seem pretty amazing.

  15. I got the same box, and had the same issue with the Hourglass foundation. My shade in Hourglass is Vanilla, which is roughly the same depth of color but cooler, so it may work for you too. I was surprised to find that I like the Alterna volume spray as well as I did, since hair volume isn’t typically an issue I have. My real disappointment was that I had just bought that exact mascara at Ulta a few weeks ago in order to test the primer for a blog post.

    1. Oh, and the Hyaluronic Skin Tint gave me a lot better coverage than the stick.
Stephy Loves recently posted…Brands You Will Not See HereMy Profile

    2. Thanks for the recommendation on trying out Vanilla. I’ll take a look at Sephora. I wish it had more coverage for me. I’ll probably end up staying with MUFE’s Ultra HD Foundation (both liquid and stick) coz I had a near perfect color match and get better coverage. But it’s always fun to try new things. Oh boo that you had just bought the Clinique mascara! Isn’t that always the way?
