Sephora Play for June 2017: Summer Starters

Just after receiving my Ipsy bag for June, Sephora Play arrived. The Sephora theme is ‘Summer Starters”, and their white cotton bag has cute beachgoers frolicking in the water.

Here’s what I got this month:

Sephora Play "Summer Starters" bag and contents, neversaydiebeauty.com

  • Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil: I know that Ouai is a prestige brand that I probably would buy for myself, but I was still a little disappointed to get yet another hair product. Turns out that this oil has a fabulous rose scent, not a subtle rose scent but a significant rosy floral scent. And there’s no way I’m using this as hair oil! It’s great as body oil. In fact, I’ve been applying it to my dry skin and it isn’t the least bit greasy, but it sinks in and softens on contact. I like this stuff! Glad I got it.

  • First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer: I love FAB, and I am very eager to try out this coconut priming moisturizer. I’m wondering if this might be enough for me to use during the summer under foundation: moisturizer & primer in one. We’ll see. I’m glad to get this, too.

  • IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel: I don’t use hair styling gel, so I’ll ask Jeff if he wants it or else I’ll give it away. Please no more hair products, or certainly not two in one bag, grrrr.

  • Benefit The Porefessional: If I went through all the samples I’ve gotten in subbie bags and boxes, I must have several of these. I don’t have bad pores so I have never used this. I’ll give it away.

  • Kat von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, shade K-Dub, bold fuchsia: Obviously, this is the star product in the bag. It’s a long wearing liquid matte lippie that everyone is talking about. The fuchsia shade is perfect for summer. As I’ve complained many times, I mostly can’t wear liquid matte lipsticks, so I thought I should give this away. But I tried it over lip balm and it’s amazing, no dryness whatsoever. I’m not crazy about this purply fuchsia on me, so eventually I’ll buy this in a shade that suits me better. Nevertheless, this is a revelation for me!

  • YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum: I know I’ve tried this scent from the tester at Sephora, and I also think I’ve gotten a sample in my Sephora Play bag previously. While I can wear the original Opium, Black Opium doesn’t suit me. I tried it yesterday, and no go. That one spray used up half the vial so it’s almost finished already.

Final Thoughts

Although I discovered the KVD liquid matte lippie that I can actually wear, I’d say another meh bag from Sephora Play. Although I do get some products that I’m glad to get a chance to test out, I’m seldom really excited about these bags. I should cancel, but I foolishly think that for $10 I get to try samples of a bunch of stuff I would probably never get to try otherwise. What did you think of your Sephora Play this month?

  1. I’m only excited about the KVD liquid lipstick out of the bunch, doesn’t seems too interesting at all. 🙁

    1. The KVD lipstick is amazing! I am not a fan of the color, but wearing it over lip balm I can wear it all day. I will eventually buy it in a shade that I like.

      1. I agree about hair products, did not need two and one is for curly hair, which I don’t have. Not a fan of the tanning towelettes either and the color of the KVD lipstick is atrocious for someone over 55-very disappointing box overall!!

        1. Gayle, exactly!! I discovered that I love the KVD formula but the color is something I haven’t worn in 20 years. Waiting for a sale to buy another shade! I really should pull the plug on Sephora Play. Wish there was some way to give them feedback like there is with ipsy.

  2. I really want to try that Ouai Hair oil, but it does sound better suited to the body for me as well!

    Good morning…….☀️⛱👙🌺
First Aid Beauty’s “ULTRA REPAIR CREAM” INTENSE THERAPY in the jar or tube, is a must have in our house. I have a stock pile of it. It has really helped with our 67 & 73 old really dry, aging skin. I would tell anybody with skin issues to try this cream. QVC carries all their products. (read the reviews) I also love their VITAMIN HYDRATING MIST it is a very fine mist that hydrates, revives and refreshes your skin. Safe for sensitive skin. I use it both on my face and body. Keep it in the refrigerator too. Have a good day. SMILE 😍

  4. The Kat von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer are something I would love to try, however, the rest of the stuff in this bag didn’t sound that exciting.

    1. I feel the same way, though the Ouai Rose Oil is very nice

  5. I use the lip balm trick with most liquid lippies! I love he shade of K-Dub! I’m so glad that you found one that’s comfortable for you. Bummer about two hair products! I just signed up for Sephora Play, finally. Can’t wait for my first month!

    1. I’m wearing the KVD lippie again today over Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm, and it is fabulous. I’m so excited that I can wear this stuff! Now I need a shade that suits me a little better. But it makes up for the rest of the stuff that’s not so exciting 🙂

I unsubscribed and am excited to have an extra $120/yr to spend on things I’ll actually use and enjoy.

    1. Ann, I know I should cancel this one, since I seem to complain about it most months. If I weren’t a beauty blogger, I would definitely pull the plug. I keep it coz I get to try out and write at least a little something about products I couldn’t afford to try in full size…or at least that’s my rationalization. I am glad I got the KVD Everlasting Liquid Matte Lipstick because so far, over Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm, this lipstick rocks! Now I just need to get another shade that suits me better 😉 But yes, with $120 you could pick up several great things that you know you’ll love! Thanks for the encouragement

  7. I’m still waiting for mine. Sephora mails mine out very last, every month because they hate me.

    1. LOL. It takes longer to get out west I guess

  8. I wasn’t impressed with the month’s Play box either. I hope they get better or I’ll be getting rid of this monthly subscription.

    1. I’ve been on the fence about it for months now, but they always manage to include at least one thing that I think is worthwhile so I just can’t pull the plug (tho I should). Glad I’m not the only one who’s been a little disappointed

  9. Kathryne says:

KVD liquid lipstick isn’t compatible with my lips but I do like a bright pink shade for summer!

    1. Glad you got a new summer pink lippie! I was absolutely shocked to discover that I can wear the KVD (over lip balm)

  10. I’d be thrilled to get a KVD lippy! You’re right – too many hair finishing/setting/styling products make their way into beauty bags. Even a mini shampoo would be of more use!

    1. Yes, I’d definitely prefer a shampoo. BTW, I bought the SPF 50 version of the Honey UV Water Gel. In spite of having a million SPFs, that one really sounded terrific.

  11. I’d like to try the FAB coconut moisturizer!

    1. Oh, I’m sorry, Lisa. I had never tried the KVD liquid matte lippie, and I was shocked that I am able to wear it (over lip balm) and it is so comfortable!

  14. Kat Von D are my favorite liquid lipsticks so I’m definitely hoping it’s in my box….which has sat unopened for two whole days – WHAT???

GREAT bag this month – Love the KVD lipstick

    1. The KVD lipstick is amazing. That and Jesse’s Girl are the only liquid matte lippies I can wear!

  16. I see what you mean, I think I would have been meh about this bag too. Love the baggie everything comes in though, I think Sephora always does a great job keeping things fun with these.

    1. I was happy that I discovered I can wear the KVD liquid lippie though this bold fuchsia is no longer my kind of shade. I have a nice collection of the white cottony bags from Sephora so I actually like it when they change things up like they did last month with a clear plastic envelope style bag.

  17. Ohh, I love the KVD Liquid Lipsticks and that shade is gorgeous! The FAB Coconut Priming Moisturizer sounds like something I’d like to try too. I think I need to sign back up for Sephora!

    1. I was thrilled to discover that I can wear the KVD liquid lippie formula tho the color is brighter than I would typically wear. One of these days, I’ll buy myself a more suitable shade. I meant to bring the FAB Coconut Priming Moisturizer with me this past weekend to try it out, but I’m home now and tomorrow I’ll give it a go

  18. So glad to hear the KVD formula worked for you! They make some really great shades.

    1. 42 shades, I hear. Hopefully, I’ll find at least one that really suits me!
