Silkiest Hair Ever with Derma E Bonding Oil

Thank you for following along with my rather tedious road to repairing my flat iron damaged hair. As I mentioned in the last installment, my hair stylist cut off more of the damage at my last appointment, but there’s still a little bit of the frazzled locks left.

I received two care packages from Derma E on Friday with lots of goodies, some of which I’ll be doing a giveaway with soon since they are duplicates of products I already own. However, the second box contained three new Derma E haircare products, and one of them especially I was excited to use immediately.

Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about using Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo with good results. I am going to be trying out a couple of additional bonding repair products in the Olaplex product line.

I noticed that Olaplex makes a bonding oil, but their products are quite pricey so I decided to pass on that one. Thus, I was thrilled to see new Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil in the box of new haircare products Derma E sent me for review! IMHO, Derma E’s clean beauty products are effective as well as affordable. If I weren’t blogging, I would probably use nothing but Derma E products.

The directions said to use a few drops from root to tip after washing and conditioning with whichever shampoo and conditioner you like. Easy enough, but I must admit I was a little concerned about applying oil after shampooing and conditioning. In the past, I applied argan or Indian oil before shampooing and left it on for an hour and then washed it out. This time, I followed the directions for Derma E Bonding Oil and applied it afterwards.

So I used Olaplex No. 4 Bonding Shampoo that I’ve been using for at least a month, and I followed it with my favorite JOICO K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Treatment. Then I wrapped my hair in my wonderful Aquis Rapid Dry Lisse Hair Turban to get some of the water out. Lastly, I put a couple of drops of Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil on my fingers and spread it through sections of my damp hair. I used the Bonding Oil instead of spraying my hair with It’s A !0 Miracle Leave-In Conditioner Spray. Then I dried it with my Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, and flat ironed it with my GHD Platinum Plus Professional Flat Iron.

The result was the silkiest, smoothest hair I have had in years! My hair feels and looks stronger. And it is perfectly straight – no frizzies! In fact, my hair that was cut fairly short (just under my chin) a couple of weeks ago looks longer. The oil did not make my hair feel at all greasy, and it appears to be totally weightless. I am so pleased with the results that I will add Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil to my regular routine.

The golden oil with a very faint natural fragrance from sweet apricot oil comes in an attractive clear glass bottle. Once you remove the twist-off clear plastic cap, you can shake out a drop or two from the hole at the top. The bottle contains 1 fl. oz/.30 ml of a combination of natural oils:

  • jojoba
  • sunflower
  • safflower
  • amla
  • Chaga mushroom
  • Mongongo
  • linseed
  • sweet apricot.

Here are the benefits that some of the oils contribute:

Chaga Mushroom: Helps to support healthy hair and scalp, an adaptogen that provides a balanced environment to improve the color and health of the hair and scalp

Jojoba Oil: Moisturizes hair while working to prevent split ends, dryness and breakage

Amla and Mongongo Oils: These nutrient-rich moisturizing oils help to promote hair thickness and support hair growth

Bonding Oil also contains vitamin E, and the beta-carotene in the formula must provide the orangey-golden hue.

I was so stoked by the results of the Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil that I couldn’t wait to write about it. But it seems that I have jumped the gun. It is so new that it isn’t yet available on the Derma E website, but I sure it will be very soon. The price for the one ounce bottle will be $11.95.

As a reminder, Derma E products are cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny certified), gluten-free, soy-free, and 100% vegan.

I was curious to see the difference between Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil and Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil besides the price (Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil costs $28 vs. Derma E’s $11.95). The bottles and the amount of product are exactly the same. Obviously, Derma E must have noticed the buzz around Olaplex’s bonding haircare products and wanted to get into the game. The ingredients in the two bonding oils do differ somewhat.

Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Amla Oil, Inonotus Obliquua (Chaga Mushroom) Oil, Schinziophyton Rautanenii (Mongongo) Kenel Oil, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Oil, Beta-Carotene, Natural Fragrance (Sweet Apricot) Oil.

Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil ingredients: Dimethicone, Isohexadecane, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Coco-Caprylate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, Propanediol, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Beta-Carotene, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Punica Granatum Seed Oil, Water (Aqua), Morinda Citrifolia Fruit Powder, Fragrance (Parfum), Hexyl Cinnamal, Eclipta Prostrata Extract, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Limonene, Tocopherol, Citral, Linalool, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Citronellol, Pseudozyma Epicola/Camellia Sinensis Seed (Green Tea) Oil Ferment Extract Filtrate.

I did not study chemistry beyond high school, so I am clearly not an expert, nor can I provide a true analysis of the differences in ingredients. However, what I do notice right off the bat is that the Olaplex Bonding Oil’s first ingredient is dimethicone, while Derma E Bonding Oil contains no dimethicone at all. The oils that they both contain are not the same, and I cannot say whether some of the oils are better than others and worth the price differential. They both contain tocopherol (vitamin E) and beta carotene. Derma E’s faint fragrance is from natural sweet apricot oil, while Olaplex’s is from perfume.

So if your hair is damaged or you would just love to have silky smooth hair, put Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil on your “to try” list and watch for it soon on the Derma E website.

    1. Thank you, thank you xoxo Honestly, it was just what I needed for my hair. I had been considering buying the Olaplex Bonding Oil, but it costs more than twice the price of this brand new Derma E Bonding Oil and unlike Olaplex with dimethicone, this one is natural oils only. I hope you’ll try it soon!

    1. Thank you so much, Marcia! Your comments always give me a boost xoxo I had only used hair oil before shampooing so I approached this with trepidation. But after frying my hair with my old flat iron, I have been trying to rehabilitate it with haircuts and Olaplex products. I had been considering trying the Olaplex Bonding Oil, but the $28 price tag gave me pause. I couldn’t believe my good fortune when I received this brand new Derma E Bonding Hair Repair Oil that costs less than half the price, does not have dimethicone like the Olaplex, and it’s made with a fantastic cocktail of natural oils. So far, I love it!

And the ingredients are natural oils without all the chemical ingredients and for half the price! Skipping the perfume is safest for those of us with sensitivities. 1. I have a number of facial skincare products that use apricot oil, but I haven’t tried it on my hair. I read your post, and it sounds intriguing on its own.
