Sensitive skin? Winter dry skin? Gluten-free? Looking for a lightweight multitasker? SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion may be just what you’re looking for.

In the winter, my skin is as dry as a bone so I am always on the lookout for new lotions and body butters to try. SkinMD’s natural formulations really appealed to me because they call their substantial collection “uncomplicated skincare”. SkinMD skincare products are:

  • vegan: dairy-free and free from any animals products
  • cruelty-free: not tested on animals
  • gluten-free
  • free of peas and corn (gee, I didn’t know that skincare products sometimes used peas and corn!)
  • nut-free and made in a nut-free facility
  • free of the following chemicals: parabens, sodium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, phthalates, triclosan, toluene, formaldehyde, salicylates, propylene glycol, and latex
  • free from added fragrance and colorants
  • dermatologist-tested, non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic.

Because they are free of many known irritants, SkinMD products are good for sensitive skin and are recommended for all skin types. However, it does contain dimethicone, so if you are sensitive to that ingredient, you should pass on this one.

I have been using SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion for about a month. 93% of the ingredients are natural, and the remaining 7% of the ingredients are “food grade” and are on the FDA’s safe list of ingredients.

SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion is a very lightweight, white lotion that is a cinch to apply. It’s almost like applying water because it goes on completely clear and disappears in an instant. I hate having to rub in lotions and creams that leave white on my skin. SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion is the antithesis of that. Plus it is completely greaseless. I think it’s the easiest lotion to apply that I have ever used.

SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion works by bonding with the skin’s outermost layer and it creates a matrix that strengthens the skin’s barrier so that it retains more of its natural oils and moisture that can be lost to frequent washing and dry or cold air. It makes skin feel hydrated, soft and relieves a tight dry feeling for up to 4 hours. SkinMD doesn’t overpromise. It doesn’t claim to keep skin hydrated for 24 hours like other lotions do. SkinMD works to heal skin naturally. In fact, though the formula has been shown to be 6 times more hydrating than other skin lotions, SkinMD recommends reapplying SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion every 4 hours or so till your skin’s barrier is strengthened and your skin feels healed and more consistently hydrated. In the winter while I’m wearing long sleeves and long pants, it is more difficult to reapply, but I try to do it when I can. Plus it feels so good to apply it and my skin feels so protected, that I enjoy using it!

The formula contains anti-inflammatory Arnica Flower that helps relieve the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis and even burns. Plus the aloe vera and chamomile in the formula are both excellent for soothing sunburns.

SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion is a skincare multitasker. It can be used on body, hands, feet, and even face. If my face feels tight and dry during the day especially after I’ve been outdoors jogging, hiking or snowshoeing, I apply it to my face. Because it is so lightweight, absorbs so quickly and leaves no grease at all behind, I can use it right over whatever I have on my face including foundation. It can also be used as a facial primer.

I’m a fan of SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion. I use it so much that I’ve gone through three-quarters of my 8 oz. bottle.

SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion comes in 4 oz. for $15.95 and 8 oz. for $28. It can be purchased on the SkinMD website, Amazon, Walmart.com, Eisler’s Chemist, and DrugStoreSupply.com. In addition to the regular Natural Shielding Lotion, there’s a version with SPF 15. I’m saving the sunscreen version for the warmer weather when I have more skin exposed to the sun. SkinMD also makes facial skincare products.

If you have sensitive skin or just love a fast-absorbing, totally greaseless, unscented, barrier strengthening lotion, I think you will enjoy SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion.

  1. It’s very interesting that they made the formula so free of town irritants, and yet included dimethicone (since a lot of people are sensitive to silicone-based products). They do sound quite nice though!

    1. I thought the same thing. I am guessing they went with what’s on the FDA’s list for “unsafe” ingredients, and dimethicone probably is not on that list. For me, dimethicone is a plus, but I felt that I should flag it since some people need to avoid it.

  2. I LOL’d at the peas & corn commentary. I had no clue either!? I do love a non-greasy lotion, especially before bed!

Thank you Allison for your beauty blog. I look forward to seeing it in my inbox! I also enjoy you sharing your experiences …like the winter sky. I also saw that sky. It was gorgeous..natural art, and beauty. PS The lotion sounds perfect for winter! Again many thanks for your review of products…Edith

    1. Edith, thank you so much for your comment! Honestly, it has made my day. I often wonder if anyone reads my musings and reviews. About that lovely sky a couple of days ago, I was tempted to stop and try to photograph it, but my old iPhone 7+ just can’t capture the colors of the sky accurately so I just watched it and enjoyed it in real time. BTW, I noticed your email handle “Edithlovesperfume”, what are your favorites? I am a perfume fiend myself. I don’t know if you use Facebook, but I really enjoy the group Facebook Fragrance Friends – the members have turned me on to a lot of great fragrances, they are such enablers, lol

Hi Allison! Yes I read your blog/posts regularly. It brings me joy! And yes I collect perfume. It is my form of therapy LOL, tough now with Covid and the limitations on smelling fragrances at counters. Thank you so much for sharing the Facebook Friends info. My favorites change with the seasons…right now I wear either Sisley Eau de Soir, Mitsouko or when I’m on the computer on a zoom meeting Wild bluebell by Jo Malone. What are you wearing these days?

        1. Thank you again, Edith xo Yes, it is tough to be a fragrance enthusiast during COVID. I have been avoiding shopping in stores for the past year so I have been buying decants and Discovery Sets online. I mentioned the indie online retailers that I’ve been shopping lately in a recent review of Iris Fauve by Atelier des Ors: https://neversaydiebeauty.com/fragrance-2/iris-fauve-edp-from-atelier-des-ors/ And I’m also wearing Francesa Bianchi’s Under My Skin. I also am wearing LUSH Turmeric Latte and Comptoir du Sud Eclats d’Amande. Regarding your current fragrances, I have never smelled any Sisley scents – in fact, I didn’t know they made fragrances! I haven’t smelled Mitsouko in decades, and recently I have been eager to sniff it again. Ah, some day I will look for a vintage decant. I am very curious about Wild Bluebell! I will look it up on Fragrantica!

Sounds pretty nice, good to hear that it isn’t greasy or scented.

  5. Natalie Barletta says:

This sounds like a great lotion! Greasy lotion is the worst haha.

    1. I agree, Natalie. SkinMD Natural Shielding Lotion is the fastest-absorbing, totally greaseless body lotion I have ever used!
