Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Mandarin

I saved up enough points on ipsy and waited till there was a perk that I really wanted. Finally! Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in a gorgeous red called Mandarin. Woohoo!

I adore red lipstick. And I have never tried any lipstick from Smashbox. Win-win!

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick, Mandarin

The shade is a red with orange undertones. It is just creamy enough for me, and it applied opaque in one pass. But I did go back for another swipe to get an even richer shade. Although it is supposed to be a matte lipstick, it doesn’t have that dead matte look that some mattes can have (I’m not a fan of that look). In fact, this looks almost like it has a satin finish but Smashbox says it’s matte. Importantly, it is not at all drying like a matte lipstick can be. And that’s coming from me with dry lips!

It is lightweight on my lips. I hardly know it’s there.

Not only is it lightweight and not drying, it’s hydrating though not overly so. You know how there are some lipsticks that are so hydrating and creamy, they’re almost mushy? This isn’t that. It feels comfortable on my lips. The box says that it is “ultra creamy” (not for me and that’s a good thing) because it has vitamin E, shea butter and “a hydrating complex”. Nice.

It has no scent or flavor.

It isn’t a long wearing lipstick on me. It seems to last for a few hours, unless I eat a meal and then it’s completely gone.

Here’s how Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Mandarin looks:

I love this lipstick. I love the sleek black square tube. It’s going directly into my makeup bag in my purse. Oooh, a new favorite red!

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Mandarin

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick contains 0.1 oz./3 g and is priced at $20. It’s a small tube, but the bullet looks normal size or perhaps a little bit smaller. its gorgeousness makes it worth it. Just in case you’re not a fan of this red, it comes in 25 other stunning shades including many deep and berry shades that would be perfect for fall.

  1. Laura says:

You look smashing!!! Great lip color for you. I think Smashbox has some good lip stuff. I used to be really into the brand years ago.

    1. Thanks so much, Laura! This was my first Smashbox lippie and I like it a lot. I’m wearing the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation in Vanilla (one of the 3 sample shades). I don’t think Vanilla is my shade but I enjoyed wearing it. I think I’ve got some left and I’m going to try mixing it with the next darker shade and see what comes out if it’s not already dried up.

      1. Laura says:

You photographed beautifully in the vanilla shade. I bet that shade will work better for you in the (dare I even say it?) Winter. I mix foundation shades as a rule. I always end up buying two different shades of the same product. It is a bummer when I end up not liking a foundation like I thought I would over time though. So I rarely switch brands because of this.

        1. Thank you, Laura! I just got back from Ulta, and I looked at the TF Born This Way shades again, and I’m going to wait till fall when my tan fades. None of the shades seemed like a great match so maybe they will come out with some other less yellow options! I bought two different shades of IT Cosmetics CC Cream, but gee, it is so expensive to do that!!

          1. Laura says:

I really want to try the TF foundation. Even though I prefer powder to liquid this one has my curiosity peaked. I have an Ulta near me but I am resisting until Winter. *fingers crossed* I am trying to be good.
I cannot handle the feel of IT Cosmetics CC Cream on my skin but it does have great coverage. I do love their powder foundations though. I currently use that in both powder formulations.

          2. Do you have the Celebration or the Celebration Illumination Foundations, Laura? I didn’t know you preferred powder foundation. Did we talk about it after I did the IT Celebration Foundation post last Friday? My memory is going 😉 I can understand why you might not be able to tolerate the IT CC Cream because it’s so heavy. The TF Born This Way is very lightweight. I find it to be similar to the NARS Luminous All Day Weightless Foundation. Today, I’m wearing the TF BTW Foundation in Light Beige, one of the other sample shades. This one is less yellow but a touch darker than Vanilla. BTW, I went back to Ulta and I exchanged the TF Blush for a mauve shade (Love Hangover had more pink than the TT Feather blush but it was too close) since it is completely different. I also exchanged the Becca Concealer for a lighter shade that will be a better option once my slight tan fades. Busy, busy. BTW, do you use brow pencil?

          3. Laura says:

I was in the hospital last Friday. I was there for 5 days so there no computer time for me. I had a partial bowel blockage. I have either a tumor or adhesions narrowing my small intestine. That surgery will be in Sept. My parathyroid tumor removal is in 5 days. Ick. I will have to look at your last Friday’s post.
I have both versions of the Celebration foundation. In the regular Celebration I own Fair. In the Illuminating I own Light and Medium. Sometimes I use the fair as a finishing powder. Or I mix all 3 or 2 together on my brush. lol
It seems during the Winter is when I do not mind using liquid foundation as much. And because of what you have told me about it I am even more interested. I have not tried too many different liquid foundations in a long time. The NARS sounds nice maybe TF is less expensive.

          4. Oh, Laura, I was wondering if something was going on. I am beyond sad to hear that you were hospitalized last week with a different issue. How are you doing now? I was confused & thought your parathyroid surgery was the last week in August. I hope you will be OK to get it done next week. How long will you be in the hospital for after the surgery?

  2. What a pretty color! I haven’t tried a lot from Smashbox besides their eyeliner, but I’ve heard really good things about their eyeshadows and lipsticks. Thanks for the review!

That’s a gorgeous color. It’s a perfect red for you.

I have a couple of these lipsticks; I like them very much.

    1. Thank you so much, Rachel! I was lucky that this was the ipsy points choice last month! I’m glad you like ’em too! I would definitely buy another

  9. Wow, this color and finish is utter perfection on you, Allison! It’s amazing that you can wear orange undertoned reds with your cool-toned complexion so beautifully. The juxtaposition of the warmth in your red hair tempers the coolness of your skin tone, and this seems to give you tremendous latitude between cool and warm toned colors. While I, too, have cool toned skin and warmer brown hair, I can’t pull off warm red lipsticks without appearing a bit sallow. I can, however, get away with warmer eyeshadows because of my hazel eyes. I absolutely love this shade on you! It really is so flattering on you!

    1. Thank you so much, Helen! Your explanation for why red/orange work on me is spot on. When I had blonde hair (I was born a blonde), I wore blue reds and raspberry. The red hair changes everything! I love warm eye shadow with hazel eyes. It must look lovely on you 🙂

      1. Wow, it’s interesting that you were born with blonde hair! I’m so accustomed to your beautiful red locks that it’s hard to imagine you as anything other than a redhead!

        1. Yes, born blonde. Got darker, meaning a wheat germ shade with blonde streaks as I got older. For a while, I lightened it, but I always looked washed out as a blonde. I definitely thought I should have been a redhead so I made it happen on a business trip to London years ago 🙂

  10. Wow that colour looks great on you! Orange reds look terrible on me – have to stick with more blue based ones!

  13. That shade looks amazing on you, Allison, and I love that it is a matte lippie. I want to check out this range (After a while. I’m avoiding the Smashbox counter for now because last time, I kept calling the brand “Hourglass” in front of the SA).

I love your Smashbox review of this shade of red lipstick!! Great detail about this matte is not the drying out type and your testimony of having dry lips which helps a lot instead looking past your review the moment you mention “matte”!!
