Smith & Cult Nail Polish: Love Lust Lost

I Bought This - Affiliate links

I received a gorgeous bottle of Smith & Cult Nail Polish in my last Ipsy Plus box. It’s a nude peachy-pink called Forever Fades Fast. I haven’t tried it yet, but I can tell it’s a perfect shade for me.

Also I love the look of the bottle.  It’s a squat, heavy glass bottle with a pale gold top that is pinched in on one side. Very elegant looking bottle. In fact, I was so taken by what it looked like that I decided to buy another shade when I ordered from Smith & Cult last week during their 30% off sale.

I chose Love Lust Lost (I guess they have a thing for alliteration). Love Lust Lost is a rose creme with a hint of peach in it.  Smith & Cult describes it as “dirty rose”. Very pretty. I haven’t polished my nails in a while because the nail on my thumb on my right hand is still growing out after I squished my thumb in a folding chair in early June. Jeff and I went to a party on Saturday night, and I decided I would throw caution to the wind and paint my nails including my squished thumb.

I was surprised when I discovered that to open the bottle, you are supposed to remove the big gold top. Beneath it is a very small black ridged cap. That’s what you open.

Although it was on so tightly that it was difficult to open at first, subsequently it’s been easy. Nevertheless, I am not crazy about holding the tiny little cap while I apply polish with the brush. That’s the only thing that’s a little weird about Smith & Cult Nail Polish. But it’s not a deal-breaker for me.

So far, I am very impressed with the formula. It was extremely easy to apply. Although I am usually not a fan of skinny brushes, this one was easy to use.

The polish went on so smoothly. While it covered in one coat, I put on a second coat. It dried quickly. Even though I applied the polish right before going to bed, it had dried completely in minutes. Another surprise was that I didn’t have to do any cleanup of the skin around my nails because I didn’t make any mistakes. Now that too is exceedingly rare for me.

In the four days that I’ve been wearing it, it hasn’t chipped. For me, that’s rare. The formula is promoted as “chip-resistant”, but normally that doesn’t make a difference. I almost always get a chip by day 2 at least. The only issue was a chip from the bread knife that slipped from my hand and sliced off a bit of polish. Surprisingly, the chip was easy to fix. Instead of removing the polish from that finger and starting again, I just painted over it and you can’t tell at all that a chip was there!

I am seriously impressed with Smith & Cult polish. When I saw that this polish cost $18, I thought that the price was based on the beautiful bottle. But now I’ve changed my mind, it’s a terrific luxury polish.

Smith & Cult Nail Polish comes in 43 shades in a variety of finishes. It’s a better-for-you polish that offers the following benefits:

  • Vegan
  • 8-Free Formula: No Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Xylene, Ethyl Tosylamide, & Triphenyl Phosphate

It’s sold on the Smith & Cult website (where I bought it) as well as at Ulta (I haven’t seen it at my local store yet), Dermstore.com, Bluemercury, Beautylish, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and HSN.

    1. Thank you!!!

  2. I’ve always been a fan of the way they package their products. I think they look good, even thought the polish is a little awkward to apply. This color is definitely a go-to for me.

    1. I’ve actually gotten used to the Smith & Cult brush handle, and now I don’t know what I was complaining about. It’s fine. And I adore the formula. I definitely agree with you about the Smith & Cult packaging – beautiful! I think you would love the shade, Love Lust Lost.

That’s the same small inner cap I found on both my bottles of MAC polish. You definitely get used to it, and I think it’s really only a tiny bit more fiddly than the likes of Dior or Burberry, where the inner cap is just a bit taller. I like that it takes up less space in my makeup bag with the outer cap off too. So many of my polishes have this two-part cap thing that I occasionally have to go round up all the loose tops and reunite them with their bottles! These are both very pretty colours. I’ve heard nice things about the Smith and Cult polish, I really should give them a whirl.

    1. You’re absolutely right, Rachel! I have gotten used to the small brush handle and it’s so easy to use. Now I don’t know why I was complaining. Without the top, it would take up less room in a makeup bag, but the bottle itself is an interesting (to me anyway) shape: squat. I love the bottle and the smooooooth formula. If you ever try it, LMK what you think!

  4. The first time I got a Smith & Cult polish was from a beauty box. I thought that something was wrong with it and that the top had been smashed in transit. I’m glad I didn’t complain! The polishes are definitely nice and go on so smoothly.

    1. Hahaha, so funny, but I could certainly understand how you might think the Smith & Cult bottle top was smashed! I am such a fan of this formula!

I haven’t tried their polish, but I have some Butter London polish that requires you to remove the outer cap to reveal the little cap with attached brush beneath just like this and I am definitely not a fan. A polish brush that I like is a big deal unless the color is so outstanding that I am willing to put up the effort.

    1. Cindi, the first time I used it, I thought the brush and the small top might be an issue, but after using it a couple of times, it’s feel like any other brush. It’s amazing that a thin brush like this is so much better than Zoya’s thin brush. This one covers in 2-3 strokes. I’ve become a believer. And the formula is super. Nevertheless, it would probably require a leap of faith for you to try it especially at this price

  6. Beautiful shade and it looks wonderful on you! I want it!!

  9. I actually like smaller brushes since I have small nails. That bottle is huge! Does it smell at all?

    1. It smells the same as most polishes! Smith & Cult makes an excellent polish.
