I was introduced to Smith & Cult Cosmetics when I received a gorgeous eyeshadow quad in my Ipsy Plus box about a year ago.

The packaging was a knockout (silver tone metal with the characteristic “pinch”, and the eyeshadow shades were buttery, easy to apply and blend and long lasting. (The lipstick above is Estee Lauder Pure Love Color.)

When I got a fabulous nail polish in my last Ipsy Plus box, I was hooked on the brand.

In late August, Smith & Cult had a 30% off sale on their website, so I decided to try some more items from the brand. In addition to ordering a second nail polish shade, Love Lust Lost, that I reviewed a couple of weeks ago here, their Veiled Threat Foundation caught my eye.

The foundation has 42 shades, so I thought there was a chance I might find a good match. They have a simple, easy to use algorithm on the website that helps you find a shade match. The shades are based on color and undertones.

The shade it suggested for me is 180 Cool, and it’s perfect for me.

In fact, I went to Ulta to look at the shades and I tried a couple of lighter shades and they were way too light for me. I have definitely found my holy grail match! Here it is unblended and blended with my fingers on my forearm. As you can see with this medium weight foundation, one of my freckles shows through and needs an extra dab.

If your skin is very fair to very deep or anything in between, you are likely to find a match.

It comes in a heavy glass pump bottle.

A little goes a long way. I apply it with a velvety Artis or Artis-style brush, a flat foundation brush, a kabuki foundation brush, or with my fingers, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference which method I use. It goes on easily and smoothly.

The foundation is described as weightless and micro-blurring. I find it to be lightweight with a velvety finish. My skin feels ultra-soft when I wear it.

I wear all foundations over primer so it’s hard for me to say if it’s micro-blurring. Smith & Cult says it provides a “soft focus” finish.

It provides medium weight, buildable coverage. My two major dark spots need an extra dab of foundation or concealer to disappear. The shade remains true all day.

It lasts all day, though if I don’t wear concealer over my major dark spot, it does become visible after several hours. But that happens with most foundations.

Here are the benefits that Smith & Cult mentions:

  • Up to 12-hour all day wear
  • Transfer-resistant pigment that remains true-to-tone
  • Melting mousse-to-cream foundation applies quickly and easily creating a moisture matte finish
  • Aloe vera gel hydrates and improves skin texture
  • Chlorophyl brightens and soothes the skin
  • Microsphere powders ensure friction free application and an addictive silky feel skin texture
  • Vegan
  • Synthetic Fragrance-Free
  • Gluten-Free
  • Cruelty-free

I decided to read the reviews on the website, and they are raves. Reviewers mention the perfect shade match, the lightweight coverage, how terrific it is for dry skin, the ease of application, and the natural finish. I think this is a foundation that is well worth trying!

Veiled Threat Foundation is priced at $42 for 1.11 fl. oz./33 ml which is pretty standard for a prestige brand. The Smith & Cult website provides free shipping and returns on foundation. As of now, it was on sale at Ulta for 30% off making it $29.40 (and if you use Rakuten you get 4% cash back at Ulta), so if you’re looking for a new foundation, check it out now.

I always think of nail polish when I hear Smith & Cult,I own a beautiful shade that is in my favorites rotation. I’m impressed by your review of their foundation and will try when it’s in the budget. I love a good foundation and this sounds like it fits the bill. Also, I was going to email you,the primer we both love,IT serum No.50,is now on sale at QVC! Two for $59.95 and as of right now there’s free shipping. It’s a great deal and I know we’ve discussed it in the past.Have a great day Allison! 😉 xo

    1. Oh, thank you for telling me, Laura, about the IT primer! I hope that they’ll repeat the offer again someday when I can take advantage of it. Because I use so little of it, my bottle of No. 50 Serum is still very full, so I’m afraid if I bought them, they would be too old before I got to them!! I’m glad that you’re a fan of the Smith & Cult nail polish. I have Love Lust Lost and Forever Fades Fast, and I love them both. The polish is truly chip-resistant, and it dries so fast! The Foundation is a perfect color match for me – with 42 shades, I think most people will find a match. I hope you can check it out someday when you need a new foundation. Hope all’s well, Laura! So happy to hear from you 🙂

  2. This foundation really sounds amazing. Your love of Smith & Cult really illustrates what monthly beauty boxes should do: introduce us to brands that we might not otherwise try in order to find new favorites. Sadly, that doesn’t happen nearly as often as it should!
