Mineral-Based Sun Protection Duo from Colorescience

Before I forget, I want to thank all those who visit and read my blog and leave comments from time to time. Last week, Never Say Die Beauty was chosen, along with the blogs of a lot of my sister beauty bloggers, as one of the Top 100 American Beauty Bloggers. I was really surprised! I’m not exactly sure of all of the criteria involved in the selection, but in terms of the ranking (NSDB was ranked #30 out of #100 which is fine with me!), the Alexa score was one of the key factors. Alexa rankings are based on traffic: unique page views (how many people visit) and pageviews (how many pages they click on). So all of you who visit the blog and check out a few pages are helping to contribute to NSDB’s success. I can’t thank you all enough! Mwah xoxo

I know I just posted my stocking stuffer and small gift suggestions a few days ago, but another “candidate” just came across my desk that I think you need to know about. Colorescience Sun Protection Duo, a holiday mini-kit with a purse size Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen SPF 50 and a pocket-size Lip Shine SPF 35.

At first I thought this would be a great gift for those of you who live in warm weather parts of the world, or for vacationers to warm and sunny places this winter. But when I looked out the window and saw the winter wonderland in my own backyard, I realized that we can all use this duo. I’ll be heading out to shovel the walkway and the driveway, and the sun is soooooo bright on the still clean white snow. I definitely need mega-sunscreen today and the SPF in these two products fits the bill!

Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen

The brush-on sunscreen powder SPF 50 UVA/UVB that you buy in full size comes in four shades: fair, medium, tan, and deep. In the kit, however,  you get shade Medium. I have been using it, and Medium works for me with my Fair/Light skin tone. In fact, the powder gives me a nice golden glow. I think the Medium shade would work for all but the fairest and deepest skin tones.

To use it, you just invert the tube and powder comes onto the brush as you swirl it on your skin. The powder feels very smooth and soft on my skin, probably because it has dimethicone along with the mineral sunscreen.

What’s very cool about this brush-on product is that it’s sunscreen and setting powder in one. And you can and should reapply every 2 hours if you’re outdoors.

This mini-size brush/tube contains 2 g, about enough powder for a month with regular use. It’s gluten-free, paraben-free and unscented. It has won the InStyle Best of Beauty Award two years in a row.

Active Ingredients:
Titanium Dioxide 23.9%; Zinc Oxide 24.1%

Inactive Ingredients:
Mica, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Lithothamnion Calcareum Extract, Mannitol, Methicone, Dimethicone, Calcium Silicate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Sodium Sulfate, Laureth-4, Diatomaceous Earth, Zinc Sulfate, Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)

Colorescience Lip Shine SPF 35

The Lip Shine mini is so cute! Perfect to tuck into a pocket so it’s handy for reapplication every 2 hours if you’re outdoors.

In the full size, Lip Shine SPF 35 comes in 5 natural looking gloss shades for a hint of natural color: Pink, Rose, Champagne, Coral, Clear, with a doe-foot applicator.

In the kit I received, I got Rose, a shade that adds a touch of a sheer hint of color to my lips along with a slight coppery glow.

But in the Sun Protection Duo kits that I saw online, it looks like you get the clear Lip Shine. It has no taste or but it does have a slight scent that, to me, is from the spearmint. It’s gluten- and paraben-free.

Active Ingredients:
Zinc Oxide 5%

Inactive Ingredients:
Phenyl Trimethicone, Bis-Vinyl Dimethicone/Dimethicone Copolymer, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Tocopheryl Acetate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Cetyl Dimethicone, Mica, Silica, Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carmine (CI 75470). Contains carmine as a color additive

Congratulations, Allison! I miss you! xoxoxoxo, Cindy

    1. Thank you, Cindy! You read my mind. I’ve been thinking about you for a couple of weeks, and I just said to Jeff last night that I wanted to call you to catch up before you leave for your sabbatical. But I haven’t called yet because I was thinking you were busy now at the end of the semester. Let’s pick a time! I’d love to find out how things are and about plans for your trip!

  3. Congratulations, Allison and well deserved! Hugs!

    1. Thank you, Shireen, and thank you for your support! It was a nice surprise to hear about this. I was shocked actually 😉

  4. I saw that Allison. I love your blogs as they are for people over 30 and not for products that I could never use. With that being said I need to try this product. Cold here in Michigan but lots of snow too.

    1. Thank you, Sandy, and thank you for your support for the blog xoxo Yes, yesterday after we got 7 inches of snow and the sun came out, it was so darn bright! If I am wearing makeup and I’m outdoors a lot, I would much rather reapply brush-on sunscreen than add cream on top of my makeup. I love this stuff!

  5. DiEtta says:

    1. Thank you, Erika! I wish it had a tad more color, but I love the SPF 35 in the gloss

  8. Congrats my friend for the award. You deserve it! That snow you have is like winter wonderland, I would freeze to death there coz at 60 degrees, I am already shivering! This is a nice stocking stuffer, the only thing I want to add though is since this sunscreen is a brush/powder-type, we need to apply more because realistically, we need at least 1 oz to be adequately protected and since 99% of the time people under-apply, this kind of sunscreen requires generous application

    1. Thank you, Kathryne! And you are right to mention that it is necessary to apply more. I will go back and adjust that. What I do is apply moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation with sunscreen, and then I use this as the day goes on to reapply sunscreen rather than applying more cream on top of my foundation.

  9. Colorescience makes a lot of excellent products.

  10. Congrats Allison it’s much deserved! Your reviews are always so thorough! I always look for stocking stuffer ideas that are $10 or less but believe in the random pricier surprise too – especially when practical yet luxury like sunscreen!!

  11. So happy that you are part of the Top 100. You work so hard on your blog and deserve accolades.
I was thinking about sunscreen this morning as I watched it snow. I took out a higher level one today too. The glare from the snow just adds to the sunshine. This is a great kit. I’d like the colored gloss better than the clear and it’s wonderful it’s SPF35.

  22. Congratulations! Strange that one of the things that we tend to neglect are a lip balm that have sun protection in it. With the Summer here in full swing most of the time, it’s time that I must check the shops for sun protection care.

    1. Thank you, Leanie! I wish I were in the southern hemisphere, and it was summer. Enjoy it!
