Supergoop Shimmershade Cream Eyeshadow with SPF 30

I’m always looking for ways to get more sun protection to make up for all my tanning and burning mistakes earlier in life. Last year, I noticed that I have a dark spot from sun damage near one of my eyes. Ugh. A couple of years ago, I bought a tube of Supergoop Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream SPF 37 with a metal tip applicator for application under the eyes. To be honest, I’m not crazy about the metal tip applicator. I think it’s messy, awkward and limiting.

I use it when I’m going to the beach. It’s a mineral sunscreen and it’s very white. When I apply it with the metal applicator, I get white circles under my eyes, so I try to really rub it in. Sometimes I squeeze some out onto my finger and I’ll apply some on the skin under my brows. But it’s very thick and if I sweat, it can run into my eyes. It’s still worth using but it’s not ideal. When I looked for it online the other day, it looked like more of a traditional eye cream and I’m not sure if it still has the metal tip. I dislike the metal tip so I hope it’s gone. I’m also curious to see if the formula is still as thick as the one I have.

Even though I’m not in love with the eye cream, I think of Supergoop as a sunscreen expert.

When I heard about new Supergoop Illuminating Shimmershade Cream Eyeshadow with sunscreen, I was all over it. You know I love cream shadow anyway, and cream shadow with SPF 30 that I can wear on my eyelid and crease sounded perfect.

Here’s what Supergoop has to say about the Shimmershade shadows:

Meet the very first eyeshadow with SPF 30, available in four shimmery shades. This long-wearing cream eyeshadow keeps eyes pretty and protected, thanks to a hybrid of mineral & clean chemical actives that protect from UV rays. It glides on seamlessly and blends perfectly without creasing, flaking or fading. Plus, it’s finger-friendly, meaning you can just swipe on with your finger and then pat into place for a lit-from-within look.”

I stopped in at Sephora in Boston last month to check out the available shades. I bought the deepest shade, Sunset, and I bought it because it looked to me like it would show up the best. In the pot, it looks like a deep rich brown.

On my finger and lid, it looks like milk chocolate. When I swatch it on my wrist, it looks even lighter and more golden with a subtle shimmer.

It’s very creamy and easy to apply with my finger. I smooth it across my lids and I put a little in the crease as well. I usually apply it over UD AA Eye Primer, and it lasts very well for me. I misplaced my new Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Primer, the one that really makes colors pop. I’ve gotta find it because I am curious to see if it will make the Supergoop Shimmershade stand out even more.

As I mentioned, I chose Sunset because I was thinking about it like an eyeshadow rather than as an eyeshadow base. If I had chosen one of the other lighter shades – First Light (ivory), Golden Hour (light gold) or Daydream (pinkish), I could have used it (especially First Light or Daydream) as a base over my entire eye area. Because each little pot of shadow costs $24 (I think that’s kind of a lot), I can’t afford to buy a few of them. Maybe next time there’s a decent sale, I’ll buy one of the others., although Daydream doesn’t seem to be available everywhere right now.

FYI, Supergoop Shimmershades are considered “clean” at Sephora, meaning formulated without 50 not so great ingredients. Another little benefit is that Supergoop marks the bottom of the pot with an expiration date. I really like that because I never remember how long I’ve had my makeup, and I know I often keep it too long.

At any rate, I am glad I experimented with Supergoop Shimmershade Eyeshadow with SPF 30. I wear Sunset just about every day, sometimes on its own and sometimes with Cargo Swimmables Shadow Sticks over it. I’m generally satisfied with it.

Supergoop Shimmershade Eyeshadow SPF 30 contains 0.5g/0.18 oz. for $24. It’s sold on the Supergoop website, at Sephora, Bluemercury, Nordstrom, Neiman-Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie.
