Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick, pink peony

I’m a sucker for pretty packaging and I fell in love with the look of the tube of Tarte’s flowered lip balm for Spring 2014. I saw the shade “pink peony” online, and it’s the pinky peach that I fall for over and over again. I probably have a million lippies in this shade.

Tarte, a cruelty-free brand, is also trying to be an environmentally-conscious brand that uses some recyclable packaging. Tarte’s new Amazonian Butter Lipstick is packaged in a cardboard tube. In order to get cardboard to fly with the consumer, the tubes are covered with a variety of lovely floral patterns. I fell for the pretty pattern. I must say that after owning it for several months now, there is no downside to the cardboard packaging for me. I don’t always carry it around in my makeup bag in my purse, but I have, and it’s no worse for wear. It still looks clean and pretty.

Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick, Pink Peony

Tarte calls this line, Amazonian Butter Lipstick. Here’s what the Tarte website says about it:

  • Inspired by the whimsical colors of the Amazon and infused with naturally-derived ingredients from its lush vegetation, these Amazonian butter lipsticks add a splash of rich color and creamy shine for a perfect pout.

It pretty much fits Tarte’s description: a “splash of color and creamy shine”. I would call it a lip balm rather than a lipstick. It’s sheer to translucent, and the pink peony shade enhances my own lip color but doesn’t add much color. Like other lip balms, it does not provide long-lasting color, but then it’s not meant to do that. I like the shade, and it’s a nice lip balm to wear everyday, doing errands, doing things around the house or yard.

Unfortunately for me, it appears to have peppermint oil in the formula (I can smell it when I apply it). I find peppermint oil drying rather than hydrating like it’s supposed to be. That said, this lip balm that I expected to be a regular in my lineup is more of an every now and then thing. Wish I had read the ingredient list first! Because of the peppermint oil, I probably should have returned it, but I like the packaging and the shade enough that I enjoy having it around and using it from time to time. Hopefully, in the summer when my lips aren’t so dry, it’ll be fine.

The range comes in 8 pretty shades and different patterned cardboard tubes. The price is $16 for 0.10 oz., a smaller than usual amount. Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipstick available at Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, Shopsense.com, and at tarte.com. As always, Tarte is formulated without parabens, mineral oil,  phthalates,  triclosan, sodium laurel sulfate, or gluten.

Here’s the ingredient list for pink peony, and yes, peppermint oil is in there!

  8. I love the packaging, LOVE the cardboard tubing! I’ve been curious about these lipsticks, but it seems like maybe I’m better off with some of the more drugstore buttery type of lip products at this point. I fall in love with makeup all the time due to packaging, lol! Guilty as charged!

  9. I love the shade and the packaging design, but I’m not a huge fan of the cardboard tube. I had a L’Occitane lipstick a few years ago that I accidentally dropped in a sink, and from that day it started looking like an empty soggy TP roll 🙁

    1. When I first saw a photo of it, I didn’t know it was cardboard packaging either, Nidia. Unless you actually hold it, you wouldn’t know. It’s still very high quality packaging. The shade I tried is definitely more of a balm than a lipstick so it does tend to be on the translucent side.
