The Battle of the Balms: Lip Balms for Seriously Dry Lips

Although winter is coming to an end, and this was a mild winter in Massachusetts, my lips are still dry as usual. Frankly, I think it’s menopause, not just the weather.  😥  So for me, hydrating my super dry lips is a year round thing.

I must have at least 15 different lip balms in my stash, but today I want to concentrate on the Big Guns, the ones I wear at night or when my lips are super dry. Although I have a lot of  balm sticks, these balms in pots or tubes seem to be thicker, richer and smoother to apply as well as longer-lasting than the waxier sticks.

Top 5 Lip Balms neversaydiebeauty.com @redAllison

I’ve tried about a million lip balms, and so far these 5 are the ones that help my lips the most.

Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm

I got a sample of Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm in my first Birchbox in January. This balm is so incredibly thick that I blew out the back of the sample tube. But I liked it soooooo much that I bought a full size tube before I used up the sample because I didn’t want to be without it.

I think you could apply it straight from the tube, but I usually squeeze out a tiny bit and apply it with my finger. A little goes a long way. It coats my lips very well. By morning, my lips feel healed.

It seems to be sold under several names: Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm or Dr. Lipp Dark Grey One (in a grey tube) but the formula is the same for all of the varieties. The Miracle Balm in the pink tube seems to be unique to Birchbox.

All natural, Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm is made from 100% medical grade lanolin. So if you’re vegan, you’ll need to pass on this one.

$16.50 for 0.507 fl. oz./15 ml. Made in the UK

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masque

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masque is very thick and stiff like Dr. Lipp, but it’s a vegan alternative. Likewise, I squeeze out a tiny bit and apply to my lips. Most people report that their lips are completely healed by morning if they use Bite Beauty at night. For some strange reason, it helps my lips but doesn’t heal them quite as well as the Dr. Lipp made from lanolin…but that’s just me.

Agave Lip Masque is also tasteless and doesn’t seem to have an odor either. It comes in clear that I bought as well as a pale pink and a red tint.

$26 for 0.52 oz/15 g Made in Canada

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

Jack Black Lip Balm has been a long time favorite of mine. Although still thick, it is a thinner formula than Dr. Lipp or the Agave Lip Masque. Jack Black comes in a variety of flavors/scents. I’ve got the Black Tea & Blackberry version, and it smells like Blackberry Black Tea to me. I really like it.

Jack Black Lip Balm contains SPF 25 so it’s a great choice for daytime or outdoor use.

When my lips are very very dry, Jack Black isn’t quite hydrating enough to heal them, but it definitely soothes them. For this winter that’s milder, Jack Black has been doing a good job for me.

In terms of ingredients, Jack Black, a cult favorite, does contain petrolatum and chemical sunscreen.

$7.50 for 0.25 oz/7 ml. Made in the U.S.

Lindi Skin Lip Balm

Lindi Skin, a brand I’ve reviewed previously, is a line of skincare products developed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments or for anyone with very stressed skin. I’m a major fan of the Lindi Skin Eye Hydrator – it’s thick, soothing and just amazing for my dry eyelids and eye area.

Lindi Lip Balm comes in a pot. I don’t love the fact that I have to either stick my finger or a little scoop into the pot to get some out. When my nails are long, it can be a pain. So I tend to use this at home rather than on the go. Tasteless and odorless, it has a waxier feel when you scoop some out, but it feels great on my lips. It’s a very effective lip balm.

$10 for 0.25 fl. oz./7 ml. Made in the U.S.

Cheek Room Lip Balm

I got this little tin of Korean brand, Cheek Room Lip Balm in a Meme Box that I got about a year ago. It has a unique formula. It’s is a clear, but pink tinted glossy gel in a pot. You can see a 4 leaf clover design in the bottom of the pot.

Cheek Boom Lip Balm, a Korean brand neversaydiebeauty.com @redAllison

Like Lindi Lip Balm, you have to use your finger to apply it. Because this is a wider, flatter pot than the Lindi Skin pot, it’s easier to get a little bit on the pad of my finger and just press it on. Also, the gel is solid, but it’s much lighter weight than the waxier Lindi Lip Balm. Though solid in form, the formula is similar to the Jack Black consistency on my lips.

It’s tasteless but it has a faint, sweet cherry scent.

Made in Korea. Unfortunately, after writing up my mini-review on this cute and fun to use lip balm, it seems that you can buy it in bulk from Korean distributors, but I don’t see it coming up on Amazon, though other Cheek Room products are available. Too bad because this little cutie is a very good lip balm!

Battle of the Lip Balms neversaydiebeauty.com @redAllison

As I’ve said above, I like all 5 of these lip balms for seriously dry lips. I like Jack Black for outdoor use, but my overall winner is Dr. Lipp because it does the best job at healing my desert-dry lips.

Have you tried any of these lip balms? What is your favorite lip balm for when you lips are very dry?

On a different topic, congratulations to Yesenia S., the winner of the Cindy Lou Manizer Highlighter from theBalm in the most recent NSDB giveaway! She has been notified by email and I’m awaiting her reply.

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the giveaway and followed, subscribed etc. I really appreciate it! Stay tuned for the next giveaway. I’ve gotta write up a couple of them. One of the next giveaway has a small prize, but there will be 5 winners!

  1. Thank you for this post, Allison! I love my lip balms and have them everywhere in the house so it’s always within my reach. Never tried BITE Agave lip masque but it’s in my list to purchase with Nuxe. I’m going to add Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm into the list too.

    1. I’ve been wanting to try the Nuxe lip balm myself, Shireen, though it also is a pricey option. I’ve really fallen for Dr. Lipp so I’ve gotta use it and the Bite Beauty up before I buy more.

  2. What a wonderful post, Allison! I have the BITE Beauty and Jack Black balms, but not the other three. I definitely want to try the Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm!

    1. I know that most beauty enthusiasts know about the Bite Beauty and Jack Black balms, but Dr. Lipp doesn’t seem to be as well known and I wanted to get the word out. I wish that Korean brand Cheek Room was more easily available because it’s pretty darn good too 🙂

  3. Rachel R. says:

My lips don’t get very dry, so I just use drugstore balms such eos, Blistex, and Burt’s Bees. For tinted balms, I like Maybelline Baby LIps and e.l.f. Kiss Balm.

I can attest to how great the Jack Black is. My son has been really ill the last few weeks, and his lips and nose were really chapped. I had a deluxe sample tube of the Jack Back, and I used clean Q-tips to apply to his lips and nose. It helped so much that he was requesting it by name. He used the whole tube. I’m definitely going to get some more .

    1. Jack Black is fabulous, and I love that I can buy it at Ulta using their coupons that makes it more affordable. I’m glad it helped your son!

  4. I gotta try out that Dr. Lipp, I’ve heard great things about using lanolin on lips!

    1. Dr. Lipp definitely works the best on my seriously dry lips. I recommend it!

  5. I love lip balms, I’ve never tried any of the ones mentioned here, I usually use the stick form or EOS type. TFS!!

    1. Your lips are probably not as unbelievably dry as mine, Heather! I’m glad you don’t need the “big guns”. But if you do, these are some good choices! Thanks for taking the time to comment, and thanks for participating in the giveaway. I’ve got some more coming up so I hope you’ll join in

  6. I’ve tried the Jack Black and think it’s ok .. I really like the Nivea lip balms, especially the Kiss of Cherry – which is always sold out 😛

    1. Jack Black is my lighter weight lip balm for outdoor use because of the spf. I haven’t tried any of the newish Nivea lip balms though they look really cute. I have seen Kiss of Cherry at my CVS so I’ll give it a go!

  7. I’m a lip balm junkie too Allison. I’ve used a few of these you’ve shown and hadn’t heard of a few of them. I’ll definitely look into them. I recently bought a lip balm that actually has hydrocortisone in it and I LOVE it. However, people have told me that hydrocortisone is bad for me, so now I have to do my research.
Stacie recently posted…Beauty Box 5 RevealMy Profile

    1. That’s very interesting, Stacie. I hadn’t heard of hydrocortisone in a lip balm. My concern about it might be that anything on the lips can end up being ingested. I assume that beauty enthusiasts would be familiar with the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masque and Jack Black, but I wanted to spread the word about Dr. Lipp since it’s so effective for me and it costs so much less than the same amount of Bite Beauty

  8. I haven’t tried the Lindi lip balm yet, but the reviews make it sound like a great product.

    1. The Lindi Skin Lip Balm is very effective. I wish they’d put it in a wider, shallower pot like the Cheek Room so it would be easier to apply. But it’s a good value and it works

  9. Thanks for this list of great lip balms. I haven’t used any of these yet, but Bite Beauty Agave Lip Masque sounds like something I should try.

    1. For me, the thick formula is a plus! That’s great that you use it on your elbows and nose too!

  12. So happy Bite Beauty made your list!

    1. It is cute, and it’s a really good lip balm too. I’m disappointed that it isn’t easier to find in the US now

  14. I’ve only tried Lindi and I liked it a lot. I kept a covered lip brush by it since my nails kept me from dipping in. If it had been wider I’d have repurchased when I finished.

  15. WOOHOO for lip balms 🙂 I’m a huge fan of balms. My favorite right now is a balm I got in an ipsy bag a few months ago. It’s all pepperminty and amazing 🙂

    1. That’s great! Unfortunately, peppermint is a no-go for me as it dries my lips out. Odd, isn’t it?

  16. My lips become chapped very easily, and my go to balms are from Korres and LUSH. I really want to try that bite mask though!

    1. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for Korres and for LUSH. I’ve used the LUSH Santa lip scrub but I never noticed their balms.

  17. Still need to bite the bullet and pick up that Bite Beauty one! Hearing such rave reviews!
Elaine recently posted…Too Faced Love Palette TutorialMy Profile

    1. It’s many women’s favorite, Elaine. Very thick, stiff formula that melts on contact with your lips. I think it would be great for a Canadian winter 😉

  18. My fave go to is good ol’ Carmex!
Miranda Mendoza recently posted…Real Techniques Brush Cleansing Palette ReviewMy Profile

    1. That’s good, Miranda. Why spend a fortune when the drugstore product works well for you! I have one of the pretty, thin Carmex sticks, but it has menthol in it which is a no-no for me. I wish lip balms would leave out the peppermint and menthol because those ingredients make my lips worse 🙁

  19. I’ve had the Jack Black Blackberry Black Tea in my Sephora cart forever and always talk myself out of it- do i really need another lip balm? Probably not, but they’re just too collectable. Great list!

    1. It is so easy to gather a huge stash of lip balms. This is only my heavy duty lip balms. You should see my collection of sticks!

  20. I’ve been using a lot of lip balms recently! I just tried a minty version of the Jack Black and I like it – and it has SPF! I got a little Dr. Jart Ceramidin set of a balm and cuticle oil that has become a new fave, too.

    1. Yes, the SPF in Jack Black is a real plus. It’s my choice for outdoor use for sure. They have such variety in the flavor lineup, I love that. I’m a fan of Dr. Jart, but didn’t know they had a balm, nice!

  21. I HAVE to get the Bite lip mask. I am a lip balm junkie and I’m always ready to try a new one. 😀
