This or That: Liquid Concealers Go Head to Head

Yesterday, I made the mistake of upgrading to the new version of WordPress for my blog. I had delayed doing it for weeks, but I finally did it, and now I regret it. The area where I put in the title of the post has completely disappeared. Sorry about that. I have no idea how to fix it, and there’s no way to go back to the old version. Several other important features don’t work either, e.g. none of the buttons work and I can’t even insert photos. Boo. I don’t know what to do. So if I disappear for a few days or if things don’t work as usual, you’ll know that it’s because I can’t get my WordPress editing platform to work. 😥

So today, I am talking about two liquid concealers that I own. Most of the time, I use cream concealer from Judith August. But every now and then I like to have a liquid concealer, especially for use under my eyes.

I am comparing and contrasting two liquid concealers:

  • Hey Honey Trick and Treat Concealer that I got in one of my Ipsy Plus bags this spring
  • Smith & Cult Cancelled Light Diffusing V-Concealer that I bought on sale a few weeks ago from the Smith & Cult website.

Hey Honey Trick and Treat Active Propolis Cream Concealer

I’ve gotten a couple of Hey Honey makeup and skincare products in my Ipsy bags over the years, and I have liked all of them. So I was open-minded when I got the Trick and Treat Concealer in my bag.

The shade I received is “Light to Medium”, and to my surprise, the shade works. It’s not too dark for me, at least now at this time of year.

It comes in a squeeze tube. The concealer, itself, is a thick liqui-cream that is so easy to apply. Because it’s thick and creamy, it stays where you put it. I can use my finger to apply it or I can use a concealer brush or a sponge. Used “full strength” out of the tube, it is a full coverage concealer, formulated with triple pigments that cover amazingly well. Used with a sponge, it can be sheered out, if that’s what you want. I love it because it’s a full coverage concealer. It covers my dark spots exceedingly well, and it also works well covering dark circles and brightening and moisturizing the skin under my eyes without any creasing.

Honestly, finding this concealer was a coup. It’s perfect for me. The tube of Hey Honey Trick and Treat Concealer contains 0.5 fl. oz./15 ml, and is priced at $36. Because so very little is required, it will last me forever. It’s made with “clean ingredients” (natural), and it’s cruelty-free.

Smith & Cult Cancelled Light-Diffusing V-Concealer

Smith & Cult makes one of my favorite nail polishes in an incredibly luxe gold topped glass bottle and one of my favorite foundations. In fact, I noticed that the foundation was on a deep discount recently for $10.50. I panicked thinking that they were discontinuing it, and I bought another bottle even though I was only about halfway through my existing bottle. They said that they made too much, but who knows what’s really going on.

While I was on the Smith & Cult website, I decided to look around. I noticed that the Cancelled Light-Diffusing V-Concealer was on sale as well, another deep discount. The Cancelled concealer was on sale for $7. I decided that since I loved the foundation, I would probably love the concealer.

I chose shade 120-Cool, one of the three shades available for Light skin tones. There are warm and neutral shades as well. There are good number of shades to choose from that go from Fair to Deep with different undertones. 120-Cool is fine for me.

The liquid concealer comes in a round tube with a fat doe-foot applicator. It’s easy to use.

Here’s the description of Smith & Cult  Cancelled Light-Diffusing V-Concealer:

“Look wide-awake & good to glow. Fluid and hydrating formula delivers lightweight buildable coverage to the under eye “v-zone” area. Monk’s pepper brightens & cocoa seed helps to defend against blue light.”

Oh. I didn’t really read this description before I bought it. I wonder how cocoa seed helps defend against blue light? From reflecting it away from the skin and, therefore, the eyes?? Hmmm.

At any rate, I missed the “delivers lightweight buildable coverage” part. Boy, it sure is lightweight. In fact, it is sheer! I have tried building it up, but even with a couple of coats, my dark spots come right through. I am very disappointed. I’m glad I only paid $7 for it. But I still love my Smith & Cult Foundation and Nail Polish. BTW, it’s a cruelty-free/Leaping Bunny Certified brand.

The Winner!

No surprise, the winner is Hey Honey Trick and Treat Active Propolis Cream Concealer. Although the Smith & Cult Concealer was a big disappointment, Hey Honey Trick and Treat Concealer did not win by default. I really love it, and I’m glad that I found it. No more dark circles for me!

  1. I like their foundation a lot too. I haven’t gotten into their nail polish since I like jazzier colors than they do. I can see now that I should skip the concealer. I didn’t realize that Hey Honey was such a hit for you.

    1. I couldn’t believe that Smith & Cult had such a great sale on their foundation that I bought another bottle even though I don’t need it! Yes, in spite of the gorgeous packaging, Smith & Cult nail polishes are primarily traditional creams with a few metallics. Definitely pass on the concealer. I really like all of the Hey Honey products I have gotten via Ipsy. They work for me!

  2. The Hey Honey Concealer sounds like the definitely winner. A concealer that is too lightweight and not very buildable pretty much defeats the purpose of a concealer! Too bad since Smith & Cult makes such lovely polished and foundations!
