When it comes to mascara, I usually choose mascaras that are more lengthening than volumizing. And I usually avoid fiber mascaras. My favorites for the last few years are three Benefit mascaras – They’re Real, Roller Lash and BadGal Bang, and the now discontinued MAC Upward Lash.

Lately I’ve had a chance to try some new mascaras that have come in my Ipsy Plus boxes. I tried one from Il Makiage and Tarte Maneater, both of which didn’t suit me. I tried one from PUR that’s OK but not my favorite. But sometimes I’m surprised by a product that I don’t expect to like. Such was the case with Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara that came in my July Ipsy Plus box.

I’ve been seeing a ton of ads for Thrive Causemetics on Facebook. Thrive is positioned as a luxury cosmetics brand (“beauty with a purpose”) that gives back by donating to cancer survivors, homeless women, women in the workplace, women, communities, and animals in need. A number of Thrive cosmetics had caught my eye in the ads I saw. So I was happy to get their Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara in my Ipsy Plus box. I didn’t read about it before I tried it, so I didn’t know what to expect.

The wand is long-ish, tapered with plastic teeth. It’s generally the kind of wand I like, though this one is a little bit long for my eyes.

The formula is both volumizing and lengthening. Contrary to the mascaras I usually use, Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara is more volumizing than lengthening, IMO. In fact, it’s a mascara with fibers in the formula. But unlike other fiber mascaras I’ve tried, this one doesn’t give me spider lashes. And it doesn’t clump. It definitely makes my lashes fatter.

The shade is called Brynn, a rich black, and right now, it is the only shade available. It is a deep, super black black.

The formula contains:

  • “ORCHID STEM CELL COMPLEX™: Stimulates + encourages lash growth.
  • FLAKE-FREE LIQUID FIBER TECHNOLOGY™: Rejuvenates and soothes lashes with a fusion of buildable fibers, Korean pasque, usnea barbata (lichen) plant extract + piperitum fruit extract to help improve overall lash health + strength.
  •  YOUTH B5 COMPLEX™: Features a combination of vitamin B5 + sodium hyaluronate to moisturize + strengthen lashes.”

I already use a lash serum, RapidLash, that I love, and my lashes are quite long. But I’m always happy to have more lash loving ingredients in my mascara.

I like Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara a lot, and that has surprised me. In fact, I’ve pretty much switched to it since I received it. The only issue for me is my lower lashes, and I may start to use one of my other mascaras on my them. I don’t like fibers on my lower lashes because they sometimes look uneven, like my lower lashes are clumped. But they’re not clumped, some of the them are just thickened with fiber and others are not. I find that not all the lower lashes look the same. So, it may be a bit more work to use two different mascaras: Thrive on the upper lashes and one of the Benefit mascaras on the lower lashes, but I think it will be worth it for the look I want.

Nevertheless, I think this mascara looks quite good. The photo below was taken when I got home from the beach on an 80 degree day. I had applied Thrive Mascara about 7 hours before. I’m not wearing any eyeliner, but the mascara sort of makes it look like I am.

Another thing I must mention is that because it is a fiber mascara, when I remove it with micellar water and a cotton pad, the fibers come off on the pad but they also come off on my face. I do a double cleanse so that’s not a problem, but I think it’s important to mention.

On the Thrive website, Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara was reviewed by 7910 customers. That’s a lot! The average rating was 4.5 out of 5, and 6300 reviewers rated it 5 stars. Nevertheless, there were some women who didn’t like the formula, saying that it either clumped or flaked. I haven’t found it to do either, but products work differently on different people.

I use Thrive mascara , eye liner , eyebrow pencil and lipstick ! I like their products. I tried their 3i in 1 but got a color that was too pink and because it’s a little pricey I never tried another color. Their products are easy to apply and the colors are accurate and most importantly they have staying power! Often times they have specials such as a cosmetic bag included ( a big one , not the Ipsy tiny ones😜)
    I love all my Thrive.

Thanks for letting me know, Lois, that Thrive is a good brand. I’m glad I tried this mascara that’s out of my usual comfort zone! I’d like to try more when they have a sale

  2. I like Thrive products, and have used their eyeliner and brow pencil. I don’t think that I have ever tried their mascara, but I don’t tend to like fiber formulas. This, however, looks and sounds quite good. I think that Thrive is definitely a very good brand.

  3. After trying this some months ago, it quickly became my “Holy Grail” after I took it on a business trip and it went 6am- 2am the next days with no smudging. I love this mascara and am excited to have introduced several friends to it too!

  4. I bought the mascara and fell in love with it. I was thrilled to find it in the IPSY bag. I didn’t realize at first that it was a fiber mascara so it was a surprise when I removed it that first time. I have absolutely no clumping or smudging. I love the way my lashes look with it. Since I don’t have many lower lashes I don’t put any mascara down there but if I did I’d use a separate one too.

Sounds not bad! I have this love/hate thing that goes on with the plastic teeth wands…right now I’m in an “I don’t hate you as much as I sometimes do” place, so at the moment this formula is intriguing. I recently used some Sephora points to get a mini Dior Pump n’ Volume (also plastic teeth wand) and it kinda reminds me of their now defunct addict it-lash formula. Hey, that one had the plastic brush too- see I haven’t always hated those teeth! LOL

    1. Allison says:

And I didn’t always hate bristle wands. I used one of the Diors with the huge bristle brush for at least a decade. Somehow the plastic teeth wands turned my head. We’re opposites

  6. I like SOME fiber mascaras, some do volumize but I find that they mostly lengthen. or I thought they did! HAhA! Glad to discover this option!

Thank you..thank you for this post. I have been seeing so many ads for Thrive on YouTube but this is first time I have heard others recommend them.

    1. Allison says:

I’m glad it helped, Sandy. I wish they had mini tubes so you could try that first. This is a good one, and till i removed it I didn’t realize it was a fiber mascara

  8. I usually don’t like fiber mascaras but I’d give this one a try!

    1. I usually hate fiber mascara. But I didn’t realize this was a fiber mascara till I removed it. To be honest, removing it is the only thing I dislike about it. It’s not hard to remove, but the black flakes on my cotton pad and my face took a bit of getting used to.

  9. I have seen a few ads for Thrive but haven’t tried anything yet. With my mascara smudge issues, I may not pick this up but should see what else the brand offers that would work for me.

    1. Wise decision. I have had a smudge or two when i have worn this mascara to the beach.

sounds/ looks nice, not sure I’d love the brush but would give it ago!
