TonyMoly The Green Tea Watery Essence: Affordable & Effective

Essences are my jam. They are so lightweight that you don’t know you’re wearing them, and they add more hydration. How can you argue with that?

I just finished a hydrating essence that I liked a lot, Airelle Age-Defying Facial Serum (reviewed here), but it’s a splurge and I can’t do it right now. I went back to TonyMoly The Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Essence that I got in one of my Ipsy Plus boxes. Tony Moly is an affordable brand of Korean skincare, and I have liked just about all the products that I’ve used from the brand.

“Chok Chok” means dewy in Korean, and the Green Tea Watery Essence helps my skin stay hydrated and look moisturized. Green Tea Watery Essence is formulated with 100% pure fermented green tea extract instead of distilled water like most other essences. The fermented Korean green tea called ChungTaeJeon and has been cultivated in Korea for more than a thousand years. This green tea that is naturally fermented via sunlight provides more antioxidants and more moisture to skin than regular fresh green tea.

Other key ingredients in this essence are:

  • lemon seed oil: antibacterial and antifungal
  • rosewood oil: soothing and revitalizing.

TonyMoly Green Tea Watery Serum is recommended for dry skin, uneven skin tone and to help fade dark spots.

The lightweight essence looks like a cream but turns to water on contact with my skin. It’s a rather unusual but pleasant serum because it disappears so quickly. It has a faint natural scent that may smell like green tea. The essence feels cooling as you pat it on.

I love using TonyMoly Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Essence as a preliminary step in my morning and evening skincare regimen. I apply it after cleansing and toning and before I apply whichever serums and moisturizers I am using.

So far, I have used up about 40% of the 55 ml bottle, and I like this green tea essence a lot. It i part of a TonyMoly Chok Chok Green Tea collection that includes Green Tea Watery Cleansing Water, Foam Cleanser, Essential Soothing Gel, Moisture Cream, Lotion, Eye Cream, and Mist. They all sound very appealing to me! They’re sold both individually and in a variety of duos and sets.

The Green Tea Watery Essence comes in a clear green heavy plastic pump bottle. It’s priced around $27-28 and is sold at Ulta, Riley Rose, Soko Glam, Revolve (where it’s currently on sale for $22) and Amazon. TonyMoly is a cruelty-free brand.

  1. This sounds very appealing to me. I am swimming in skincare products right now, but I am going to put this on my list to try. Thank you for the wonderful review, Allison!

oh wow I have to look into this since I haven’t tried any essence yet (just serums etc. is it the same?) and this one sounds pretty amazing!

    1. Essences are usually a watery, hydrating step in the Korean skincare system that you use after cleansing and toning and before serums and moisturizer. I have dry skin so I really like doing this step. The TonyMoly Green Tea Watery Essence is a really cool product. It’s a lightweight gel-cream that liquefies on my skin. Love it!

I love green tea in products! I don’t think this would work well for my combination/oily skin though. I haven’t used this brand in awhile and need ot check out what all they have available now!

  4. This sounds really nice. I haven’t had the pleasure of using an essence yet, but I hope that changes soon!

  5. I am especially all about the serums in the summer when I just don’t need a real moisturizer. This one looks great!

  6. This sounds like a nice affordable option I can try! Thanks for the recommendation!

  7. This sounds very nice. I think my sensitive skin would like it. I had to stop using the Airelle serum so I could move on to the next skincare product in my queue to review, but I want to finish it up! When I am done all this, this essence is on my list! 🙂

    1. I loved the Airelle serum, but the price is out of my range. The TonyMoly is affordable and has such an interesting formula: it sort of liquefies on my skin! Love it, and you might too

  8. I put on so many layers right now that I never think to use an essence. I did use one from Algenist and liked it but never wanted to spend the money on a new one. I wonder if I’d like the fragrance of this.

    1. The fragrance of the TonyMoly Green Tea is very mild and it disappears immediately on me. I am a fan of a lightweight, usually liquidy, fast disappearing hydrating essence after cleansing/toning and before serums, but I’m probably obsessive!

  9. I actually don’t really know about essences although I’ve used one before from SKII. I’m going to look into this more. There’s actually a Tony Moly store pretty close to me.

    1. I loved the SKII essence, but it was too expensive to buy it when I used up the travel size. I’ve tried a number of others that are equally pricey. This affordable one from TonyMoly is doing the trick. I always like to use some kind of lightweight hydrating essence after cleansing and toning and before serums and moisturizers. I need all the hydration I can get 😉

  10. This sounds like a really nice affordable essence.

  12. Since I have oily skin this might be too emollient for my skin type but I wonder if they have something else in the line that would work. I know my skin loves a good essence

  15. I feel like I need to add an essence to my skin care routine, I just haven’t done it yet. I’ve heard amazing things about TonyMoly products, and have even received some in subscription boxes, but I’ve never actually used any.

I have normal to dry skin and yet it worked on me pretty well. Love the burst of cool hydration..( if that makes sense 😉😋 ). Love the fragrance too. Have you used the water cream from the same range?
