Instrument of torture or useful lash lining tool?
I tightline my eyes every day, or just about every day. With my blonde lashes, my eyes don’t have enough oomph without eyeliner and mascara. However, I often think that black eyeliner on me is too harsh. On the other hand, tightlining – creating a line between the lashes – and lining the upper waterline are fabulous. They create definition but don’t appear to be too much.
Several months ago, I discovered Too Faced 3 Way, a lash lining tool that’s supposed to make it easier to tightline and apply eyeliner.
The zigzag design of the brush is supposed to make it easier to get between the lashes. It does…somewhat.
You take the tool and dab it in between the lashes. In the process, it can’t possibly fit perfectly so it squishes some of my lashes a little bit, but they spring back. It provides a nice shade of inky black. The line in between my lashes and along my waterline drawn with the 3 Way seems to last a little longer than my Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner Pencils.
As an eyeliner, I am not at all fond of this tool. I find it more difficult, rather than easier, to draw an even line with the 3-pronged tip, but then, I’m not an expert at liquid eyeliner.
So, what did I think? It was a fun tool to try out, but when I’m finished with it, I don’t think I’ll repurchase. Even though the line is a little longer lasting and better defined, I find it just as easy or easier and certainly faster to use a pencil.
Too Faced 3 Way is 0.02 fl.oz./8 ml. It’s made in Korea, is cruelty-free, and is priced around $22. It’s available at Sephora, Ulta, some department stores, on Amazon, and at www.toofaced.com.
Have you tried Too Faced 3 Way? What do you think about it?
Ingredients: Water, Acrylates Copolymer, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Propanediol, Laureth-21, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Dehydroacetate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Arginine, Disodium EDTA, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Black 2 (CI 77266).
I haven’t tried this and didn’t know it existed! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it with us. I think this is something I’d like to experiment with but not sure if, like you, it would make sense for me!
BeautyJudy recently posted…Jaded Nail Co. Vegas Heat and Nail Polish Remover
I thought it was worth a try, Judy, but as you could tell, I’m on the fence about whether it’s worth it!
It doesn’t look like it would make it any easier!
Destany recently posted…Zoya Naturel Deux collection swatches+review
Yeah, it really doesn’t, Destany. It stays on a little bit better than pencil, but it’s not easier
That looks downright painful to even use. I never heard of this product until now. Thanks for the review.
Hahaha, Laura! It’s not really painful but just awkward. And it takes longer to use than a pencil, for sure. Thanks for your comment!
Very interesting product. I think I would like to give it a try 🙂

Such a cool liner. I love it.
Phyrra recently posted…BECCA Lowlight Sculpting Perfector Review
Glad it works well for you, Phyrra!
I had heard about this and I was very intrigued. I was hoping it’d make application easier, not the opposite. What a let down!
gio recently posted…Product Review: Pupa Lasting Color In Afro Terracotta
Yes, Gio, it was kind of a let down, especially when using for eyeliner. For tightlining, it does work quite well but it takes longer than pencil. It is not a necessity, unfortunately.
I’ve tried this thing and I don’t know…it’s a bit gimmicky. I see how it MAY work for the new eyeliner wearer but for those who just want a simple liquid liner, meh…it may be too much.

I agree with you, Brittany!
I wouldn’t have guessed you have blonde lashes! They always stand out in your pics, which means they look great! 🙂
Amber recently posted…Break the Routine with Secret ClearGel
You are sweet, Amber! I think I’ve only got a couple of pix without mascara and eyeliner coz my eyes don’t show up at all without it 😉
That looks painful and scary haha. Glad to hear you weren’t a huge fan of it so I won’t be tempted to try it.

Hahaha, Leigh! You can pass on this one 😉
This is definitely a novelty for me, I’m sure I’d poke myself in the eye a thousand times before I get it right. thanks for sharing!
Anastasia recently posted…Beauty Blogazon Roundup 8/11/2014
That’s cute, Anastasia. It’s not so hard for tightlining, though it takes longer, but I find it hard for lining.
Was curious about this, thanks for the review. I’m afraid I’m too klutzy to make it work!

Oh I had no idea this existed!

What do you think about it, Ange?
Looks like a torture device! lol. I love using a small push brush and gel liner to tightline. Wayne Goss has a video where he shows you how to tightline by applying makeup to the eyelash curler. Maybe that’s something to try!
Nidia – Lit From Within recently posted…Naturally Fly
Haha, Nidia! Glad you’ve got something that works well for you. I tend to use a pencil most of the time for tightlining because it’s faster. The 3 Way lasts a little longer than pencil for tightlining, but I don’t think it’s worth it ultimately.
Interesting! I have a tightlining brush from IT Cosmetics that has the same pronged shape.

Yeah, they must think the pronged shape is the way to go!
I bought this so long ago and still haven’t played with it. Now I’m inspired to bust it out!

I actually really love the 3 way liner
Laura MyNewestAddiction recently posted…Comfort Factor Makeup
That’s great, Laura. I use mine sometimes for tightlining because it seems to last longer than pencil, but I find it hard to use for eyeliner.
I almost bought this when it came out but then I didn’t because I was sure it would be hard to use!

This is something totally worth trying out

I heard about this when it first came out but didn’t buy. I don’t think this will work for me either.

For me, it is not a necessity, Kathryne.
I remember when I first got into the cosmetics world back in 1999… and Iman had something similar. It was a short run for the product, but it made lash lining easy for those that couldn’t keep their hands steady…
Honeygirlk recently posted…Perlier Honey Miel Royal Elixir Face Youth Serum
Oh, how interesting, Honey. That was quite a long time again. It is interesting to use for tightlining, but it takes longer to apply than a pencil.
Great idea, too bad it’s not all that great!
Sheila recently posted…Makeup Of The Day 10 – Eddie Funkhouser Belle De Jour
I find it takes longer to tight line with the 3 Way though it stays on longer. For me, it’s difficult to use as an eyeliner. But others may feel differently 🙂
Hi Allison,
Sometimes sophisticated tools won’t make things easier! I prefer my regular pencil eyeliner. I once tried the liquid eyeliner ( don’t remember the brand name) but it didn’t work for me!
Anyway, since I have very dark black eyelashes, I rarely use an eyeliner 😉
Dima Al Mahsiri recently posted…And the Winners of Azure Naturals Vitamin C Serum are…
I bought it primarily for tightlining, Dima, to use in-between my lashes and the zig-zag shape does get in-between better than a pencil but it takes longer to apply. And as an eyeliner, I find it much harder to use than an eye pencil. How lucky you are to have dark lashes! Mine are blonde, and it looks like I have no eyelashes unless I tightline and use mascara 🙁
This looks pretty interesting.
Kendra recently posted…Fall 2014 Makeup Trend: Bold Eyeliner
It looks interesting to me too, Kendra, so that’s why I tried it. But I don’t think I’d buy it again. Not a necessity.
Hahaha, 3-way. I’m so mature.
Kimmi @ The Plastic Diaries recently posted…Scout Cosmetics – Mineral Powder Foundation Review

Looking at it, it looks too complicated. But I’d have to try it to know 🙂
I’d be curious to see what you think, Lisa, if you ever try it.
Great review, it looks very similar to my elf eyeliner pen, which I like a lot, but I think the design is a little different. With my liner I can do a super fine line along the eye or a thick wing holding it slanted to get a thicker application. If you find it at Target definitely give it a try, I’d love to see a comparison 🙂
Thank you, Krystal, for checking it out and for commenting. I think it looks very similar to your. Getting a thin line, however, is very difficult, but I know I’m not as skilled as you are. I bought it primarily to use for tightlining, and it is OK for that…but I’ve found that using a pencil is sooooo much faster! I will check out the elf next visit to Target so I can see what it looks like up close 🙂
I would say leave this product because you can achieve that same look with a regular pencil.
Melody recently posted…black Up Cosmetics Lipsticks are Love in a Tube
Yes, after using it for several months off and on, I’m with you, Melody: pencil is the way to go!
I have very blonde bases to my lashes & tend to go more for gel to tightline.
Stepanie Louise recently posted…Glamour Doll Eyes Insider Unboxing & Swatches for August 2014 + Eye Looks
I didn’t realize that gel did better for blonde lashes. I can’t see that it makes a difference on mine, but that’s good to know. I’ll try it!
Sounds great as a tight lining tool, but doesn’t look like it would be ideal for use as a regular liner…
Kristina Vieweg recently posted…Beauty Blogazons Roundup- W/E 8/16/14
Kristina, it really is good for tightlining, though maybe not quite as quick as a pencil. But for eyeliner, fuhgetaboutit!
thanks for the review! I just got this recently and haven’t tried it out yet
