Too Faced Melted Lipstick: Peony

I’ve been getting the email announcements from Too Faced and reading all of the early blogposts about Too Faced’s new Melted Lipstick line. It is a liquified stain lipstick, similar to Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar, but with a somewhat different formula. OCC Lip Tar contains peppermint oil to maintain freshness instead of the chemical parabens. Unfortunately, peppermint oil dries out and irritates my lips. I can’t buy any more of them because I just can’t wear them. So I was excited about Too Faced’s new launch.

When I saw the swatches online, I fell in love with Peony. It looked like the peachy pink shade of lipstick that I keep buying over and over again because I like it so much. Don’t ask me why I didn’t swatch this lipstick when I was in Ulta a few weeks ago. I guess I just forgot.

Too Faced Melted Lipstick Peony

So over the Memorial Weekend, I looked online for sales and I came up with a 20% off coupon for Too Faced. I pounced. In addition to Melted, I bought a full size Lip Insurance that I love and reviewed about a month ago (review link), and I bought Better Than Sex Mascara that so many women rave about (review in the near future!).

My haul arrived a couple of days ago, and I couldn’t wait to finally try Melted Peony.

Too Faced Cosmetics

For those of you who have been busy doing other things, let me tell you a little bit more about Melted. It’s described as a liquid, long wear, glossy lipstick. The line launched with 6 shades: nude, coral, peony, violet, fuchsia, and ruby, and has recently come out with 4 more: marshmallow, fig, candy, and berry All look gorgeous in the swatches. It comes in a 0.4 fl. oz/12 ml tube with a sponge applicator tip (I should have photographed the applicator before I used it, but I couldn’t wait!). It’s easy to apply even without lipliner (where the heck did I put my Milani Transparent Lipliner – review here – that I loved???).

Too Faced Melted Lipstick Peony

Peony is a light pink with a hint of peach. It’s also lighter on me than I expected from the swatches. I do like it, however. It reminds me of OCC Lip Tar’s Annika, a light peach with a hint of pink. I think the color on my lips is truer than the out-of-focus swatch which looks much rosier and was made with two swipes of the applicator. (Actually, I think I prefer the deeper color on the swatch on my arm!)

I’ve worn it a couple of times since it arrived. It’s very lightweight, and it is glossy. With or without Lip Insurance, it doesn’t feather or bleed. It’s neither hydrating nor drying, though after wearing it for a while, my dry lips are drier, but that’s probably just me with my super-sensitive, super-dry lips. Applied over City Lips Lip Plumper, a real lip hydrator, it’s fine.

On me, it’s not actually that long-lasting, a couple of hours at best…and that was on top of Lip Insurance that usually makes a regular lipstick last for hours and hours. When I eat or drink anything, it comes off on the glass, the fork, and just disappears leaving some color behind on my lips. A bit disappointing.

Too Faced Melted Lipsticks are priced at $21and are available at Sephora, Ulta and on toofaced.com The product is cruelty-free, and it’s made in Italy.

My verdict is that I like Melted Peony, but I’m not quite as in love as others seem to be. I think that’s because the shade was a bit different than I expected plus I hoped it would be longer-wearing than it is. That’s OK. I’m satisfied. I’m glad I bought it. I think the shade will look even better if I have a slight tan.

I haven’t bought any of these but I have read about them. I do own one OCC lip tar that will last me beyond the grave. 😉 While I am interested in sampling I doubt I will purchase. I own countless lipsticks and glosses. I am trying to break my habit of purchasing them anymore. With that being said I would still be thrilled to receive one of these Too Faced Melted Lipsticks as a gift. lol I think this color looks nice on you. Very soft looking. It flatters you.

    1. Laura, me too. I have enough lipsticks of all types to satisfy a small country. I succumbed because I thought it would be more wearable for me than the OCC Lip Tars that are sitting in their box ‘coz I can’t wear them. Peony is pretty, but honestly, I think Milani’s Lip Intense is a better formula…at least for me, and certainly more affordable. But this is a nice summer color, and I will try to wear it. Thank you for the compliment!! <3

  2. I bought Fuchsia and Coral only last week lol. They didn’t have Peony or Nude in stock, so I left my comfort zone. Fuchsia is brighter-than-bright and goes to my sister (after I swatch lol). The colour I want the most is the new Melted Marshmallow. Like you, I prefer the rosier on-arm swatch of Peony lol.

    1. I should have bought either Coral or Candy, lol! I need a little more color on my lips. Marshmallow looks very pretty, but a tad too light for me. I do adore Too Faced products!

  3. Most long lasting lip products have that effect, they dry the lips. What I always tell clients is to keep a moisturizing lip stain handy like Revlon Bitten or the new CoverGirl Jumbo Gloss balm and just dab over the lip stain product. OCC lip tars also have the same effect and they do feather, no lip product is 100% long lasting.

Shame it didn’t work for you.

    1. I tried applying it over Jack Black Lip Balm but next time, I’ll put Jack Black on top. I should give up on liquid lipsticks but I couldn’t resist! Although I like the summer-y peony shade, I should have swatched it in the store first because I think “candy” would’ve been a better choice for me. All in all, I still wear it. Wore it yesterday 😉

  9. rach says:

Who needs a tan? Looks lovely as is! And I didn’t realise there were four newer ones. I’ll have to go find swatches. I don’t think these are the product for me (need more moisture!) but I’m still curious. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Rach! Peony is a little lighter and a little pinker than I thought from the swatches I saw. I should’ve gone to the store to try it first. But it is pretty! You are right, if you have dryish lips, it may be a tad too drying. This is not nearly as drying as OCC Lip Tar but it is a little if your lips tend to be dry like mine.

  10. I have yet to try these, which is surprising given my obsession with lip products. Now it is back on my shopping list!
